Caribbean - Waist high surf on Monday with a few chest high sets. Tuesday it's the same, and only by Thursday will a few head high waves show up. Friday and Saturday have plenty of chest and head high surf, with a few freak overhead sets showing up at the reef breaks.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 1/27 or posted)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Strangely cloudy days are interspersed with normal sunny days lately but the wind holds off shore. The waves, if you can call them that, are about knee high. This is a great time to teach your kids and pets to surf, go snorkeling, diving, fishing, swimming...

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): This is supposed to continue on through the weekend and into next week. Esto sera asi todo el fin de semana y tambien la semana proxima.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Drive south and catch some nice shoulder high surf at Nosara/Giones. Vaya al sur y agarre unas olas de al hombro.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been getting smaller each day after several days of just overhead perfection during the first part of the week. The tides are now in the morning and conditions are good for the swell to pick up. Even though there are inconsistent head high sets now, the crowd (especially some piggy longboarders) is a factor. Where else are you going to go? Look for stronger off shores to start the week off on Monday. The sand is especially good right now.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Any spike in the swell could bring us excellent surf with these conditions.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Right now the main peak has most of the bigger waves and almost all of the surfers.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo - (1/28)

Today we went to marbella. it was glassy, about waist to shoulder high, and fun. there were some closeouts, but a lot of the waves had nice shoulders too. it was quite crowded, but pretty spread out. everyone left after the tide started to go out and left us with some really fun waves to ourselves. To see the pix, go to - www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

Well, not much different from last week's report - still smallish surf with the best conditions around higher tides - mornings have been pretty fun with the offshore wind and high tide push. Coconut Harry -- "Work Less - Surf More" www.coconutharrys.com

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Hey Dudes and dudettes, surfs fun if small, nice walls at Esterillos Centro the last few days and rumour has it that Jaco was fun too . Monday is showing a bit bigger stuff too ! Charge it ! Chuck !

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Waves chest high in most spots with the overhead sets at the better breaks for Tuesday and Wednesday morning. By high tide Wednesday it's chest high, but every half hour a big set, from head high to a foot overhead, comes in perfectly if you're at the right break. It's a good time for a boat trip. By Friday the swell is gone, leaving more waist to chest high surf for a week.

Caribbean - Surf is 2-3 foot overhead, pretty clean with a 9 second period until Thursday, then more closeouts through Friday with the majority of waves overhead. Size for the weekend is more 1-2 foot overhead surf, but inconsistent with lots of smaller waves to catch. Catch surf like this through March and stay comfortable - contact info@...

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 1/14 or posted)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Hey, the Papagayo winds are here, so hold onto your hat! Hold on to your board too and cover your head when you come up for air because fiberglass can fly. Waves this week haven't gotten much above waist high, but they're suppose to pick up to about shoulder in the next day or so.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell should pick up some tomorrow and the tide will be perfect for a nice Sunday morning surf. El swell subira y la manana del domingo sera lindisimo para surfear.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Depends how the swell hits. Places to watch: rivermouth, Pico Grande, the reef in front of Diria. Depende en como llega el swell. Ponga el ojo en: la boca del rio, Pico Grande, el arrecife en frente del Diria.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: It's not flat. There's a great shoulder high wave every once and a while for the patient and lots of little perfect peelers. Light crowds, and amazingly , the water is still warm in spite of the constant off shores.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same, but don't be too suprised if it jumps or flatens out on any given session. It's the Playa Grande focus in at work.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The focus is shifting daily up and down the bay. Look for a spot without other surfers and join the wait.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo - (1/4)

Today was really the bottom of the swell, although there were still some fun longboard waves at avellanas. it was knee to waist high on average, and very clean with light offshore wind. To see the pix, go to - www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been very small the last week or so. Howling offshore wind hasn't helped much with the size.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): A swell from the SW will start to show and should see some head high to a little over head by the beginning of the week. Hopefully the wind will back down a bit. Nothing but sunny and warm all week.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: With the tide high through the middle of the day all this upcoming week, check out Sapo's at Playa Langosta.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: See what's happening at Playa Negra right now. Go to www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com and check it out.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

Hola amigos - it's Coconut Harry reporting from Playa Guiones (Nosara). Surf continues relatively small, but at least fun with good shape on set waves - best times around the higher tides - waist to chest high. Coconut Harry SURF * EAT * SLEEP * REPEAT "Work Less - Surf More" www.coconutharrys.com

** From Erik with the Nosara surf report -(1/11)

Well, there isn't much surf on the beach today, but there were some boobies. A friend caught the action. On another note, we made it to Ostional last night for the turtles, and I have to say that if you happen to be here during Arribada, you have got to check it out. Without telling a fish story, there were probably a thousand turtles on the beach. They were so thick that I was run into twice from stubborn turtles trying to get back to the water. You aren't allowed to use a flash and there was no moon, so I couldn't snap any pics... but if you are in town now, check it out in the next night or two.

The Nosara Surf Team, a local surf team that rewards young surfers who stay in school and help their community needs donations! On your next trip down please help us by bringing any old baggies, leashes, lycras, boards, ect... to help our surf team. Surf supplies are hard to get and expensive in Costa Rica, and your junk would make some local groms super stoked! You can drop off supplies at Wanderlust Realty or email me for details here . Thanks, Erik.

** From Marco at Manuel Antonio Surf School - (1/12)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: For Saturday and Sunday: front of Mar y Sombra: 2 to 3 ft Playitas: 4 to 5 ft Playa Rey & Isla Damas: 6 to 8 ft

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): It will be best to surf in the mornings as this is when the water should be the most glassy.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playitas and Playa Rey

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: How can they ever get smaller? I've seen a small day at Miami beach with larger waves. These have been basically unridable . I've never seen smaller waves in my 4 years living at this beach. Ah, but just this morning (Sunday) we're getting a taste of what should be coming.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Well, at least the weather is expected to be perfect. Actually, as mentioned above, a small event should be coming in Sunday and growing to fruition on Monday. The tide is about perfect for a small swell like this and surfing at mid-tide should be best...say 8:00 am???

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach in front of Dominical. The river mouth to the north looks promising too, but don't go too far north or you'll get into a closed out section.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - (same as 1/3) Waves are waist high, with a few chest high sets each hour with maybe one random head high peeler.. Minimal swell from the West brings waist to chest high at best surf for the next 8-9 days with a 12-13 second period. Only the most consistent peaks will have any hope for a head high wave. A WSW swell is setting up for an overhead hit by Monday (1/15) and by next Saturday a few freak 2 foot overhead sets appear from the NW.

Caribbean - Foot overhead surf for Tuesday, getting more inconsistent through the day. By Wednesday, only the sets are overhead in the morning and it fades to chest high by evening. Thursday and Friday morning are waist to chest, but another ENE swell pushes in a few head high sets by sunset. Then it's back up to a foot overhead for the weekend with the occasional 2 foot overhead set on the reefs by Sunday.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 12/30 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Although it's a little smaller now, the surf has been great all week peaking on Weds. with experts only, perfect barrels.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): We are moving into our morning high tides and the afternoon sessions are still excellent also in the shoulder to head high range.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: This swell is coming straight in and breaking all the way to Tamarindo.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo - (1/4)

We went to witch's rock and ollies point. first of all, we saw 4 whales pretty close to the boat right before we got to ollies. At ollies, the waves were thigh to chest high. it made for some fun waves like the one in the second photo. once they hit the inside sandbar though, like in the third photo, there were some dredging barrels over about 6 inches of water. we saw a lot of people wipe out hard, but one person in our group had the worst one. she broke her clavical and we left to go to the doctors for the day. the boat captain and his family were very helpful all day long in making sure everything was ok. This weekend i'm going to jaco with the rest of the surf team for a contest. i'll try to get some surf reports up from down there. To see the pix, go to - www.witchesrocksurfcamp.com

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: There isn't much wave height here. Pancake best describes it. The weather however is great. Warm and breezy.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Not much out there for the next few days. A pretty good NW ground swell will start showing Thursday and with these conditions, it could be really good.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: These next few days will be good days to get other things done. Or a mask and snorkel would be fun.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: You can see just how flat it is today. Go to www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com and check it out.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

Hola y Feliz Ano Nuevo from Playa Guiones (Nosara)! Waist to chest high with just the hint of a little bigger north swell on Monday & Tuesday - waves seem a bit better around the higher tides. As my friend Craig Sutton from Jax Bch, FL likes to say "It's all about the tide" Coconut Harry's Surf Shop www.coconutharrys.com

** From Erik with the Nosara surf report -(1/8)

Small, small, small... I am getting tired of it... The waves have been good, but just small. Today is waist, maybe rib high, perfect longboard peelers. The water has been crystal clear the last few days, and the winds have been good, just no real swell. T he Nosara Surf Team, a local surf team that rewards young surfers who stay in school and help their community needs donations!

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Bueno ¡ Waves of 3-4 ft faces for the contest at least afternoon high tide push ¡ It was super clean fun and not too crowded here last night but the masses are here for the contest now so probably have to wait for a casual surf til Sunday but the CNS is being blessed by small clean perfect conditions here . I expect it to remain the same and if this little westerly stuff keeps showing every half hour we should even have a op to surf TULIN and the West Reff a bit by Monday etc. Pura Vida, Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF , where surfing is WALKING ON WATER !

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Just this morning we had what you might call a swell. Mostly shoulder high waves, with an occasional head high in the mix. At mid tide they are producing a nice run but at high tide it is very difficult to catch them without a long board.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): The weather is spectacular. Sunny and little wind. It looks like the little swell will hold through Monday when we should see another little bump up in size from the south. Should be good Monday through Wednesday.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach at Dominical, Hermosa, etc. The point is not working.

CR Surf Report for 1-3-07

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 9, Issue 364
January 3rd, 2007

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Waves are waist high, with a few chest high sets each hour with maybe one random head high peeler.. Minimal swell from the West brings waist to chest high at best surf for the next 8-9 days with a 12-13 second period. Only the most consistent peaks will have any hope for a head high wave. A southwest swell is setting up for an overhead hit by a week from Monday (1/15)

Caribbean - The first BIG swell is here - 1 to 2 foot overhead at the beach breaks, bigger on the reefs with an 8 second period. Best day is Thursday morning, when sets hit double overhead. After that it drops a foot each day through the weekend. Still a foot overhead and cleaner conditions by Sunday. By early next week it fades back to chest high and another wait for waves.
