CR Surf Report for 3-27-07

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 9, Issue 376
March 27th, 2007

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Surf is chest high with head high sets, no major swells for the week, just clean consistent surf. The next swell arrives from the SSW on Sunday morning. First a few overhead sets with the rising tide, then growing to 1-2 foot overhead by Monday. This swell will last for four to five days, so if you're planning a trip, next week is the week to do it.

Caribbean - Waves waist high are the calling card for the last week of March, as the NE swells come with less frequency. Same sized surf all week with a rare chest high set, until Sunday morning when head high sets arrive from the ENE. Will pick up next Monday to overhead, but won't last past Tuesday.

Low Tide - 1.97 feet at 3:55 p.m.

Full Moon - 4/2

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 3/25 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: This last bump in the swell left us with great surf as it dropped and cleaned up. We still have nice head high waves and the early morning sessions are firing. Saturday afternoon was mysto.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): As we go into the new high tide in the morning week, the swell looks fine and the morning wind should cooperate. The sand is getting a little funky but still excellent.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There is good surf everywhere. The focus is just south of the main break in front of the hotel.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - After a great couple weeks of waves, things have slowed down a bit. The last couple days have been waist to head high and great for the kids. Warm sunny skies are giving way to more and more clouds in the afternoons as the rainy season approaches. Look for an increase in surf for the next couple days from the SW with head high plus waves with it best on the incoming tide.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - **Watch for extreme tides this week!** Surf chest high for Monday, a foot bigger at south facing beachbreaks. Tuesday morning it stays small, except up by Grande and north where it picks up to overhead. By the end of the day, most beaches are breaking head high to overhead. By Wednesday morning, a few 2 foot+ overhead sets appear each hour, but the low tide makes them closeout. When the tide fills, you'll see waves maxing out mid-afternoon. Lots of set waves Thursday when the size drops a foot, but gets more consistent. Friday it falls down to head high to overhead, lots of waves to catch, but no mo mackers. The weekend stays head high with overhead sets. No major swell until a week from Friday.

Caribbean - No change in size from today's waist high surf with a rare chest high set for Monday. By sunset a few more chest high sets appear and on Tuesday the surf is consistent chest to head. Wednesday a solid East wind swell pushes in overhead surf, sticking around Thursday and Friday morning. Then it fades fast, disappearing down to chest high by sunset. More chest high surf for next weekend.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 3/17 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been too big, and too straight, for our end of the bay this week. On top of that, the wind has been coming on shore by mid day just as the swell has started to relax. The surfer recue biz has been brisk all week without losing anyone. I got to witness one and was duely impressed. A good practice in big shore break, especially if there are several surfer rescuers, is to put a leach on the bather so you can find them if you get caught in a rogue set. I heard there was a drowning in front of "Palm Beach" near Tamarindo on Thurs. but don't have any details. The Las Tortugas Hotel brochure recommends not swimming in the ocean on our end of the bay due to the dangerous surf conditions, but unlike a lot of us surfers, the bathers are fearless.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The high tides are moving into the afternoon, and the wind probably won't hold for the weekend days.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We've been going down the beach to the Tamarindo Estuary for incoming tides and off shores in the morning.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: In the last few days as the swell has passed, waves have gone from head high to chest high. The wind is staying off shore until mid moring only. That's unusual for March, but the water is getting warmer again. En estos dias con el swell que pasaba, las olas fueron de a la cabeza de al pecho. El viento esta off-shore en las mananas solamente. Esto es inususal para marzo, pero el agua esta mas caliente.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Wave size may drop off a bit and we'll see what the wind does. El tamano de las olas puede desminuir un poco y vamos a ver que hace el viento.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Mornings at Langosta while the tide is still low should be good. If the size holds and the wind goes on shore, check out Capitan Suizo. Las mananas en Langosta mientras la marea esta baja debe ser buenas. Si el tamano sigue asi y el viento sopla on shore, puede ser bueno al Capitan Suizo.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (sent on 3/16)-

Sorry for the delay in the report. I took a camping trip to witch's rock for a while and did not have access to the internet. I did take my camera however, and these are a few of the photos from the trip. (See photos)

The waves were very good. the smallest sets were about chest high, with average sets being a couple feet overhead, and the biggest sets (especially tuesday morning), being double overhead or so, and very hollow and powerful. the wind was offshore and the conditions were clean.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: After a week of large surf, we have smaller fun size waves for the masses. And it seems the masses are here. That's because the weather is perfect with light offshores under warm sunny skies.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The surf will stay on the small side until mid week. More perfect weather for the entire upcoming week.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Low tide is running through the mornings this week so hit those low tide spots like Langosta. As the swell picks up mid week, check out Little Hawaii and Playa Negra.

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Boy oh Boy ¡ Surfs up for sure , havent had a small day in days, a bit straight on but waves all over the place ¡ High tide coming up in the afternoon this week and clouds and rain , yes rain so it could make for some clasic afternoon session here this week . AREA REPORTS (sent in on 3/10 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We started the week (and catching the crowd off guard) with some of the best overhead surf we've had here in Playa Grande for some time. The perfect shape degenerated into messy conditions on Thursday. The water warmed up with the afternoon on shores and then a short good session tried to peek through in the afternoon, yesterday, as the tide filled in - then the wind switched on shore.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): As the tide moves into the morning session cycle, it should clean up nicely as the off shore wind picks up each day and the swell relaxes a little. Up to now this swell is a little too west and too big for here.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Tamarindo is picking this swell up and is relatively smooth in the early morning. Keep an eye on all the peaks in Playa Grande if the wind holds for the afternoon session.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Under beautiful blue skies with fairly strong offshore winds, we have great surf. 2 to 3 feet overhead out of the SW and only a handful of takers.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): A slight decrease in swell but watch out as the swell is suppose to pick way up with double overhead for midweek. Sunny and offshore in the morning. Afternoons could go either way with the wind.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We have high tides running through the mornings and afternoons this week so hit those high tide secret spots. You know where they are.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Killer bikini photos at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

Overhead set waves rolling in this morning, but tending to close out. A drop in conditions for tomorrow and maybe the tide will help. -- "Work Less - Surf More" www.coconutharrys.com

** From Erik at www.SurfingNosara.com -

Booyakisha, Big Ups to my main man Guiones... Surf up to double overhead this morning, super clean, super good... The swell is really thumping again today, with solid overhead conditions and well, well overhead sets. Some bombs were double overhead and for most of the morning were lining up sick. I had many waves over a few turns, a few all the way from the flag to the graveyard... Looks like the next few days will stay nice and huge, broken boards and fear factor!!!!

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Well seems swell is on the way and we have waves right now so things are looking up. Just got back froma good solid headhigh session with decent conditions at spot X and really couldnt ask for much more. Winds are backing of with the evening clouds but of course no rain its still months away ¡ Have fun happy surfing ! Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF.

50 percent less leatherback nests, by The Beach Times

The last nesting season of leatherback turtles at the Las Baulas National Marine Park in Guanacaste, on the Costa Rican northwestern Pacific, is a source of worry for environmental authorities and organizations, since the number of arrivals decreased by 50 percent, as compared to the preceding season. Wardens counted only 58 individuals of the endangered species, while in the preceding season there had been 124 sightings. The worries can be fully understood when one takes into account that this is the most important leatherback spawning site in the Eastern Pacific and the fourth worldwide.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Monday morning surf will be chest high with a rare head high set. Tuesday, the head high sets are more consistent, and an hourly overhead set arrives from the NW. Wednesday through Saturday are more of the same, chest to head high, with occasionally a bigger set. By Sunday evening the first '07 southwest swell arrives with 2 foot overhead waves, staying big through next Wednesday.

Caribbean - Surf stays a foot overhead Monday and Tuesday morning, before dropping to overhead by the end of day. Wednesday and Thursday stay head high with a number of bigger sets each hour, and Friday shows more ESE swell filling in up to 2 foot overhead. The swell combo's with another from the NE, giving the right coast very consistent surf, lots of closeouts, so head to the reefs this weekend. More swell on tap for all next week, too.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 3/3 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Today, Saturday, the off shores held all day to lightly fan nearly perfect, just overhead, waves. Earlier in the week , it was even larger and mini epic. Even though the sand is beginning to soften up and shift, it is still flat and very good right now.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same with dawn patrol and double sessions beginning in a few days when our Playa Grande surf cycle starts over. The possibility of southerly power swells is increasing.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are peaks everywhere along the bay at some tide.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo - (3/2)

Yesterday we took a trip to marbella and had great waves. this report is a day late because i was so wiped out from swimming all day that I fell asleep before getting to post the photos. the waves were mostly chest to head high, and hollow. The first 2 photos are from that day.

Today, the surf school took a trip to la finca. It was about the same size as yesterday, but the wind was onshore today, so the conditions weren't as nice. there were still some fun waves though.
