CR Surf Report for 1-8-07

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 9, Issue 365
January 8th, 2007

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - (same as 1/3) Waves are waist high, with a few chest high sets each hour with maybe one random head high peeler.. Minimal swell from the West brings waist to chest high at best surf for the next 8-9 days with a 12-13 second period. Only the most consistent peaks will have any hope for a head high wave. A WSW swell is setting up for an overhead hit by Monday (1/15) and by next Saturday a few freak 2 foot overhead sets appear from the NW.

Caribbean - Foot overhead surf for Tuesday, getting more inconsistent through the day. By Wednesday, only the sets are overhead in the morning and it fades to chest high by evening. Thursday and Friday morning are waist to chest, but another ENE swell pushes in a few head high sets by sunset. Then it's back up to a foot overhead for the weekend with the occasional 2 foot overhead set on the reefs by Sunday.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 12/30 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Although it's a little smaller now, the surf has been great all week peaking on Weds. with experts only, perfect barrels.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): We are moving into our morning high tides and the afternoon sessions are still excellent also in the shoulder to head high range.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: This swell is coming straight in and breaking all the way to Tamarindo.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo - (1/4)

We went to witch's rock and ollies point. first of all, we saw 4 whales pretty close to the boat right before we got to ollies. At ollies, the waves were thigh to chest high. it made for some fun waves like the one in the second photo. once they hit the inside sandbar though, like in the third photo, there were some dredging barrels over about 6 inches of water. we saw a lot of people wipe out hard, but one person in our group had the worst one. she broke her clavical and we left to go to the doctors for the day. the boat captain and his family were very helpful all day long in making sure everything was ok. This weekend i'm going to jaco with the rest of the surf team for a contest. i'll try to get some surf reports up from down there. To see the pix, go to - www.witchesrocksurfcamp.com

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: There isn't much wave height here. Pancake best describes it. The weather however is great. Warm and breezy.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Not much out there for the next few days. A pretty good NW ground swell will start showing Thursday and with these conditions, it could be really good.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: These next few days will be good days to get other things done. Or a mask and snorkel would be fun.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: You can see just how flat it is today. Go to www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com and check it out.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

Hola y Feliz Ano Nuevo from Playa Guiones (Nosara)! Waist to chest high with just the hint of a little bigger north swell on Monday & Tuesday - waves seem a bit better around the higher tides. As my friend Craig Sutton from Jax Bch, FL likes to say "It's all about the tide" Coconut Harry's Surf Shop www.coconutharrys.com

** From Erik with the Nosara surf report -(1/8)

Small, small, small... I am getting tired of it... The waves have been good, but just small. Today is waist, maybe rib high, perfect longboard peelers. The water has been crystal clear the last few days, and the winds have been good, just no real swell. T he Nosara Surf Team, a local surf team that rewards young surfers who stay in school and help their community needs donations! On your next trip down please help us by bringing any old baggies, leashes, lycras, boards, ect... to help our surf team. Surf supplies are hard to get and expensive in Costa Rica, and your junk would make some local groms super stoked! You can drop off supplies at Wanderlust Realty or email me for details here . Thanks, Erik.

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Bueno ¡ Waves of 3-4 ft faces for the contest at least afternoon high tide push ¡ It was super clean fun and not too crowded here last night but the masses are here for the contest now so probably have to wait for a casual surf til Sunday but the CNS is being blessed by small clean perfect conditions here . I expect it to remain the same and if this little westerly stuff keeps showing every half hour we should even have a op to surf TULIN and the West Reff a bit by Monday etc. Pura Vida, Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF , where surfing is WALKING ON WATER !

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Just this morning we had what you might call a swell. Mostly shoulder high waves, with an occasional head high in the mix. At mid tide they are producing a nice run but at high tide it is very difficult to catch them without a long board.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): The weather is spectacular. Sunny and little wind. It looks like the little swell will hold through Monday when we should see another little bump up in size from the south. Should be good Monday through Wednesday.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach at Dominical, Hermosa, etc. The point is not working.
