2. What is the weather / wind direction in the p.m.?
3. What's the best spot to check for surf in your area this weekend?
4. What is the wave size?
5. What is the wave smoothness and clarity, either(glassy or choppy)
6. Are there any water pests?

TIDES (add 50 minutes each day)
High Tide - 7:02; Low Tide - 2:54
DOMINICAL
With no storms close for the next 5 days, expect clear skies, offshore winds, great sunsets, and surf in the chest to head high range, but only at the right tides. Just surf all day, it's the HOLIDAYS J Upcoming: Visitors and Locals, keep the beach CLEAN!
PLAYA JACO & HERMOSA
Using www.surfcheck.com, Surf in the chest to head high range at Tulin, the spot for the last week. This week - everywhere's the same, pick one!
NICOYA PENINSULA
From Patti at The Monkey Bar & Best Western - Vista Villas Tamarindo "Guanacaste's Surf Connection" (653-0114) www.tamarindo.com/villas. The unseasonal weather pattern in Tamarindo switched out on Tuesday - so we should go back into the normal December weather - sunny and offshore winds during the day. 1.Guanacaste is slowly picking up offshores in the a.m. for the outgoing morning tide. 2. Winds holding in the afternoons with some gusts 15+. 3. Playa Grande is showing a chesthigh wave and the winds are keeping the surf rolling throughout the day. 4. A new push from the west-northwest should keep surf waist high to chest high at west beaches. 5. It should be clean and glassy in the a.m. on the outgoing tides. 6. No reported water pest in Tamarindo - however the water is cool - avg. temp 78 degrees. Wetsuits not required - It's Costa Rica!!! 7. Guanacaste has fiestas every weekend - live music throughout the week in Tamarindo. Feliz Navidad!!!!!
MANUEL ANTONIO / QUEPOS
Todd Cutter at Alacran Surf Tours 777-1868 reported - 1-2. Chance of afternoon showers, but I think summer has arrived! 3. best spots to look for this weekend are Playitas, Bajos(end of Manuel Antonio beach) Quepos. 4. Waist high - fun cruisers 5. glassy; little choppy in the tardes when the shore winds arrive 6. nada 7. There is going to be a huge festival at the end of this Feb. Berok and Alacran will be hosting a surf tournament at the same time.
From the Hotel California in Manuel Antonio (777-1062) Begin your trip in Manuel Antonio and Quepos, where the waves prove to be consistent and large when the swells come to this area. Beginning in Quepos at Damas, this point is where the river mouth and the ocean meet forming large tubes with lefts and rights. From Quepos, a short ten minute drive to playa Manuel Antonio is the next great spot for surf. located next to the famous Manuel Antonio National Park, travel to the far north end of Playa Manuel Antonio to Playitas. Consistent lefts and rights with good shape and size when the tide is high. Playa el ray, 25 minutes south of Quepos is the perfect tropical getaway, with no accommodations other than the typical Strong lefts and rights that hold for what seems like forever are native to Playa el Rey.

(2) From Loius at Las Tortugas at Playa Grande - AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: The surf has been small in the waist to head high size all week. Lots of off shores and perfect shaped straight and westish swells hiting passable sand bars. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Should be more of the same with the swell picking up a little today. The incoming tide is in the morning with lingering tidal push extending the rideable window. BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: All the spots are working from chicken head to the river mouth.

(3) From Martine at Hotel Café de Paris in Nosara - AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Overhead, 5 feet, nice and clean, offshore wind. QUEPOS & MANUEL ANTONIO (QMA)
(5) From Alacran Tours in Manuel Antonio - AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Waves have been hard to come by in this area for the past couple of weeks and the plethora of rain has certainly not helped anyones' already pessimistic attitude. Anyway, the few waves have been waist to shoulder high (if you are lucky). Some afternoons have been plagued with heavy winds making for a choppy session although yesterday afternoon saw some glass and waist high+ sets in Playitas. With a small SW due this weekend, we are expecting the waves to reach shoulder high in most exposed areas and waist high+ in less exposed areas. The weather is looking up this morning with sunny skies and high temps. BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The best place to surf this weekend will be Playitas just before high tide as well as Bajos (if you don't mind a lot of spongers!). A few of our guides went out to Isla Damas this morning for a little something different and Playa El Rey may be a good option this weekend if the swell picks up. NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS: This season, Alacran Surf Tours will be offering surf lessons, board rentals, guided surf trips (interm - experts) to El Rey, Dominical , Escondida, etc...We will be offering 4x4 surf trips, jet ski surf trips and we also have a 46' sailboat that we willbe using for charter surf trips to any area of the country...full day trips to El Rey, overnights to Dominical, or multi day trips to wherever. The boat has 5 beds in 2 air conditioned cabins, full kitchen, 2 bathrooms, kayaks, snorkel and scuba equipment, fishing equipment, 2 zodiacs, etc....if anyone has any clients heading this way and they are looking for an exciting surf trip, send them our way and our guides will show them a trip of a lifetime...ALSo, as I mentioned in a prior email, starting on Jan 3 or 4th, I have been hired by SURFER MAG to take around one of their journalists to investigate all hotels, restaurants, surf points, etc as they will be coming out with a new publication this spring called SURFER TRAVEL REPORT. The magazine will come out only 1 every 5 years and will be filled with information such as hotels, surf spots, travel agencies, etc...if anyone is interested in advertising, let me know and I can forward the rates to you...hotel co-op pages are available...call me at 777-1721 or email at alacran@sol.racsa.co.cr....if anyone can help out with lodging on your end while I am showing this guy around, I (and he) would be greatly appreciative.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

1) From Carmencita at Hotel Las Tortugas -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones:

We've had a good size swell running the last few days with
offshore winds making for lots of fun. Today the wind died
a bit in the afternoon, and with high tide in the afternoon
we don't get the full offshores on the swell as we'd like.
Nevertheless, the surf's been great, though a bit crowded!

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a
pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas):

With high tide still too early for a morning session over
the weekend, we're left with hoping the offshores continue
through the afternoon hours. The main peak at Grande seems
to be the spot as of late, so expect the crowds to be even
worse over the weekend.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor
lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area:

Check out the Tamarindo Rivermouth for early incoming tide
sessions. Then head back to the main peak at Grande for the
afternoon session, or better yet, spread out and find your
own peak to the north or south!

2) From Diana at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones:

We've been walking, hitch hiking and driving out of town
this week because our Tamarindo waves have been tiny -
waist high at best. Winds have been great and Langosta has
had some fun shoulder high waves on the mid incoming tide.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a
pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas):

We can only expect the waves to get bigger and today
(Thurs) seems to be an improvement over yesterday. Solo
podemos esperar que las olas se hagan mas grandes y hoy
(jueves) parece estar mas grande que ayer.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor
lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area:

Best places in town will be Langosta and hopefully our
rivermouth. Avellanas should be fun and a walk to Playa
Grande will definately be worth the hike! Los mejores
lugares en Tamarindo seran Langosta y la boca del rio.
Avellanas debe ser divertido y la caminata a Playa Grande
valdra la pena!

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:

Happy Thanksgiving! Feliz Dia de Accion de Gracias!

3) From John at Pura Vida Tours in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones:

Waves have been small and fun for most of the week. It has
been 2-3 feet with offshore winds. We've also had some NNW
sets hitting.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a
pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas):

This weekend looks to be fun with a NNW swell hitting and
look for the offshores to continue.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor
lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area:

There is a contest this weekend in Playa Negra. It looks to
be real fun with 3-4 swell.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:

Pura Vida Tours is now offering a $20/day special with a/c
and pool only 100 yards from the beach! Playa Grande's best
deal!

4) From Steve at Tropico Latino Lodge in Santa Teresa (Mal
Pais)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS:

Summer at last is here with offshores and blue water. Swell
has been up and down ranging from chest high to overhead
sets on the incoming tide. Top conditions with peeling head
high sets yesterday p.m.. SW with some W mixed in.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND:

More of the same with more swell by Sunday.

BEST PLACE TO SURF IN YOUR AREA:

11:11 a.m @ 7.4 ft. - 226 cm.
Low tide - Marea baja
5:10 a.m. @ 1.4 ft. - 43 cm.

SWELL DIRECTION -- DIRECIÓN DEL SWELL

Pacific - The SW swell will be fading out through the weekend. Expect smaller surf all next week, around head high or less in most areas by Monday. However, next Thursday morning will be the HIGHEST high tide of the year - at 10.6 feet. So that might generate an incoming tide push. The "dry season" is a time of the year when the best surf will be had four or five days after a full or new moon. See the tide chart above.
Caribbean - Hurricane Lenny stirred up some salsa in the Caribbean but the surf has since dropped off greatly. There will be a slight E swell, but nothing over head high.

(6) From Alacran Tours in Manuel Antonio - WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: This past week (or two), it has been a real batttle. Early morning sessions are the only savior...favorable winds and waist-shoulder high waves. In Playitas, sets hit shoulder high + but were plagued by mushy conditions. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): With a small swell expected for the weekend, we are expecting/hoping for a slight improvement in local conditions. Look for Playitas to reach head high in the morning. Scattered afternoon showers have affected the surf recently and we expect more of the same.

Two days later beautiful early morning waves created by hard rain the night before and off-shore winds. Rights and lefts, should high in Playitas. Other than those two or three days or surf there hasn't been didly squat. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): We are praying for some surf night and day for this coming week and are expecting waist to shoulder high waves at best. The weather has been fairly rainy the past few days and we are expecting the rains to continue in the early to late afternoon. BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: If the swell doesn't pick up too much the best place will be Playa el Rey which is located about 20 minutes south of Quepos. This is an exposed beach break that offers miles and miles of open lefts and rights. NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS: Just waiting for the high season to kick in around Thanksgiving time!!! *Surf report provided by local gringo ripper Jota.

DOMINICAL & SOUTHERN PACIFIC (D)
(8) From Hotel Rio Lindo in Dominical - AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Have been enjoying the hours before high tide and onshore winds on the beachbreaks. Easily overhead on sets, chest high when it's smaller in the late afternoons. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND: Overhead closeout barrels for really early with some gems. Then onshore but a nice peak from the SW for the midday high tide. The new moon brings stronger shifts. BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Beachbreak UPCOMING EVENTS: Keep the beaches clean - Mantenga limpia la playa !!

CARRIBEAN (C)
(9) From Mel Baker at A.T.E.C. in Puerto Viejo: AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: 3-4 ft, between mushy and choppy WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Looks like the rain and waves will hold on for several more days.

SWELL DIRECTION -- DIRECIÓN DEL SWELL

Pacific - Wax it up good!! The SW swell arrives Friday, then the west (with a little north in it) look like it will throw a bump in it by Monday. Then a bulky SW swell will take over for the early part of next week. Short period waves, then getting longer with a shorter time between sets. Get on it early or paddle out for a pre-sunset sesh.

Caribbean - This side of paradise looks promising with a low pressure kicking up some surf from the north. Expect overhead surf, but lots of rain and wind.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

(1) Patti at Best Western, Tamarindo Vista Villas - AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: More movement from the sw should bring up the surf late Friday with 5-8 wave heights. Conditions, glassy and barreling in the am and tends to go onshore mid morning. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): SW coming in, waves should range from 5-7, clean and glassy with the early offshore winds. More rain may be coming in over the weekend. BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Ollie's and Witch's had a solid week of 5+ surf and should be the same over the upcoming weekend. Playa Negra for the skilled surfer 7+. The rivermouth at T Bay is rolling the beach and should be a great ride at 5+ Sat/Sun. NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS: The Wingnut Premier of The Art of Longboarding at Vista Villas in December.

(2) From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: The swell dropped today after a pretty good week of rainy season surf. The Playa Grande side of the Tamarindo River mouth has been rideable, to very good, almost every day during incoming tide, showing some overhead size on Sunday. Conditions are still sketchy as the off shores are not here yet and most days are at least a little choppy here in front of the hotel. High tide is in the morning now and the day break session is still overhead here in front, and slightly bumpy, but good. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): With high tide in the morning, look for some decent surf before the wind picks up. There is some threat of a tropical depression in the Carribean which will bring strong on shores and stormy surf to our area. Be sure and check before you head this way. BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Try in front of the hotel early and Tamarindo River mouth as the tide comes back in in the afternoon.

(3) From Steve at Tropicos Latino at Santa Teresa - LOCAL WAVE HEIGHTS & CONDITIONS: After several rainy choppy days, we have some sunshine today with ridable peaky surf out of the SW. Sets are around 5' (i.e 2' overhead). WHAT TO EXPECT THGIS WEEKEND: Plenty of swell, but also plenty of rain. The Pacific coast has a green alert in force for potential flooding. Suggest once again you check local conditions before coming down. BEST PLACE TO SURF IN YOUR AREA THIS WEEKEND: High tide moves into the a.m. With a big swell predicted, Mar Azul could get good. However with the predicted rain, we could be in for another blown out weekend.

JACO & HERMOSA (JH)

(4) From Mike at Villa Hermosa - AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: A LITTLE OVERHEAD, GLASSY, STARTING TO SE SOME FUN PEAKS AFTER ALOT OF DAYS OF CLOSE OUTS. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): PROBABLY THE SAME, MAYBE NEW SWELL BY SATURDAY, EXPECT A LOT OF RAIN FROM A DEPRESSION THOUGH, ALSO ROAD CLOSED FROM ATENAS TO OROTINA SO CHECK BEFORE YOU COME THIS ROUTE BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: HERMOSA, ROCA LOCA, TULIN

QUEPOS & MANUEL ANTONIO (QMA)

(5) From Alacran Tours in Manuel Antonio - AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Impressive wave hight this weekend with 3-4 foot waves with 7-8 foot wave faces in good sets. Waves with a lot of panza or stompach in Playitas. Choppy waves in front of Mar Y Sombra. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Swell dimishes until Wednesday and appears as though new swell to enter on Thursday. BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Best surf in Playitas or Mar Y Sombra in early morning a evening will probably will see heavier rains. Playitas in my opinion will host best waves between 5:30-8:30 a.m. Early morning on weekend in Playa el Rey could be really good with 4ft to 6ft swells. (report courtesy of local ripper Jarred Hansen a.k.a. Jota) NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS: Alacran Surf Tours will be opening a new office in Quepos central on Nov. 15th, 1999. If your in town come by and check it out!

DOMINICAL & SOUTHERN PACIFIC (D)

(6) From Hotel Rio Lindo in Dominical - AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: It’s been killer since Monday with well overhead sets. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND: Paddle out early for the offshore session (before 9:30) BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Beachbreak UPCOMING EVENTS: Ask Paco at Rio Lindo where the party is this weekend. He’ll steer you in the right direction!!!!

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: As this swell dimishes, check out nearby El Rey or Bejuco for challenging waves (and a little of a paddle!); Playitas should be solid with favorable winds; just before tide, head into Quepos for a slow, left (nice longboard ride) NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS: Alacran Surf Tours is organizing Spring Break trips to Costa Rica through over 20 universities in the States along with a student travel agency. Any hotels that are interested in participating in this promotion, please contact Todd at 777-1868. AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)
(1) Patti at Best Western, Tamarindo Vista Villas - still M.I.A……
(2) From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: The rain has finally let off to reveal a consistent headhigh to just overhead swell. Conditions are still pretty messy with the high tide moving in to the afternoon and the possible good surf dependent on afternoon showers to glass it off. Without offshores, the likelihood of super clean waves is almost nil. (measure the front of the wave and how it appears to break (glassy, choppy, mushy, barreling) WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): The high tide will be even later for a possible session here and there. (a guess on the size of the waves and the weather if possible) BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: In front of the hotel at three quarter, chicken head rock at high, and Playa Grande side of the Tamarindo River mouth anytime during incoming. NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS: The letherback turtles are beginning to arrive at Playa Grande for their nesting ritual in the evening.
(3) From Thierry at Café de Paris in Nosara - AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Guiones : Swell, 4 - 6 feet, quite good. Messy Pelada : swell 6 - 8 feet, better then Guiones a little messy . Could be better if the win stop. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Guiones and Pelada : sunny since 2 days. If the weather stay like this must be better abd better. BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Guiones and Pelada not big difference and very close from each other.
(4) From Steve at Tropicos Latino at Santa Teresa - WAVE HEIGHTS & CONDITIONS: Still SW and head high with some bigger sets. much better weather this week and hence some pretty clean days.. best it's been for a while. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND: With a SW swell on the way, should be a great weekend if the weather stays fine. BEST PLACE TO SURF NEAR YOU THIS WEEKEND: Low tide is moving into the mornings so it's barrels at Santa Teresa or blood 6 guts at the reefs

Waves were best in Playitas about 3 hrs before high tide. High tide bests were further south at Mar y Sombra/Bajos. Waves were between 5-7 ft at their best...low tide was steady at Boca Quepos which is a left...beware, do not drink the water. Sunday through Thursday best waves are in Playitas. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): With a new south west entering on Friday, we will be expecting chest high+ waves in Playitas, El Rey and perhaps out at the new mouth of Damas. Weather has been fairly consistent with sunny days and cloudy late afternoons..have not seen too much rain yet...so we expect it any day now!! BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: For best breaks, check out Playitas a couple hours before high tide (rights and lefts) if the winds are favorable; Del Rey, or even north to Bejuco or Esterillos are always good alternatives if its flat in Man.
