NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Surf chest to head high for Christmas Day, with an overhead set every halfhour on the southern beaches. Tuesday the presents arrive, overhead sets from the Northwest mixed with head high sets from the Southwest. The combo lasts through Thursday morning, and by sunset most of the set waves are gone. Leftover chest to head high surf Friday and a foot smaller Saturday. Not much for the next week, stomach to chest high - a freak head high wave every hour.

Caribbean - East swell pumps in the first head high sets on Monday, but only one or two per hour. Then on Tuesday it's head to overhead with more of the same for Wednesday. By Thursday the waves die off back to chest high with a couple of sneaker sets and Friday is another between day, waist to chest high. Another East swell forming by Venezuela sends out the first headhigh sets by Saturday afternoon.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 12/23 or posted)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Tamarindo has had waves and big ones for about two weeks running which is something I can't remember when I last saw. Waves are head high at the higher tides and the wind has been going on-shore late in the morning for the past several days. Lots of strong side-current in the white water from so much motion.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The waves size is not predicted to change significantly. Expect the beach to be a busy place with Christmas sun-bathers. Las olas no estan pronisticadas de cambiar. Habra mucha gente tomando sol en la playa por la navidad.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Let the Tamarindo beach break go this weekend and paddle out to Pico Grande, go to Langosta or to Playa Grande. Deje la playa principal de Tamarindo este fin de semana y vaya a Pico Grande, a Langosta o Playa Grande.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The last few days have been disappointing with the lack of all day off shores and the dropping swell.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): With the high tides moving into the early morning and the off shores picking up over the next few days, there is a high probability for good surf. Double sessions are likely A bunch of dorks around here asked Santa for swell. We'll see.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The entire bay has been good with suprising quality at the rock at the north end of Playa Grande.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Ask at the hotel about the student's quarters and apartments for unbelievable bargains during the high season in Playa Grande right in front of the main breaks.

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been head high to a foot or two overhead. The wind has been offshore in the mornings and onshore in the afternoons.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The surf will stay in the head high range through the first part of this week but will drop after Christmas. Look for smaller surf until Thursday when it will pick back up to a bit over head. We are into the dry season now with lots of hot sunny days with that dry warm offshore wind.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The tide will be high in the early mornings this week so Playa Negra will be the spot. This place is a wave magnet like no other around here.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 12/16 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We are enjoying a fabulous Westerly swell with amazing surf all over the bay. The well over head swell is hitting Tamarindo perfectly and with good form, although smaller, up and down the beach. The off shores are holding into the afternoon.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell is losing strength but conditions are good for some great smaller surf.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Every spot looked good today and the crowd was well spread out for fun conditions. It's actually larger at the Tamarindo Estuary for a change.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Ask at the hotel about the student's quarters and apartments for unbelievable bargains during the high season in Playa Grande right in front of the main breaks.

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (12/17)-

Keith has dengue and has been in bed for the last four days, so I'm writing the report to get everyone caught up. We've had tons of swell now, today is day 9 and it is currently 6-8 foot face waves in front of the camp, maybe even bigger on the biggest sets. The wind has been blowing offshore until about 1pm or so. We've got a big surf contest in town and it has been great to have swell for it, Cedric, Carlos and Luis have all made it to the final round. Hopefully Keith gets better soon as I suck at taking photos. If you read Wednesday's report, its a little smaller than Wednesday but there is still tons of swell in the water. It seems like we should continue to have waves for a few more days. Click here to see the new webcam and pics from today's forecast.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

We're getting that north swell, but not ALL of it, so waves are fun - not big - but pretty good shape. Best times are, as always, dawn to 10:00 or 11:00 am and then the last hour at sunset - clean & light offshore winds. "Felix Navi-daddy-o", amigos! Coconut Harry www.coconutharrys.com

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We have had unseasonal rain the last few days. The storms have made the surf sloppy and unorganized. Waist to head high with hard onshores in the afternoons.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The surf will be staying in the head high range through the first part of the upcoming week. Mid week will see an increase in SW swell and is forecast to get even bigger for next weekend.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We have a pretty low low tide running through the mornings this week. Negra will be very good if swell is hitting the reef from the right direction. Could be a real rock dance though. Check out Langosta or the Avellanas rivermouth. It will be fun there with less crowd.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: See what the surf is like right now...www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Erik, with the Nosara surf report -

Fun surf again today! Sets overhead, clean. Most folks blew it by surfing too far south, as the N. Side of the bay was firing...

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 12/9 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Our little shoulder/head high swell picked up Thursday and locked in on the main peak for some great afternoon sessions. The afternoon off shores switched yesterday for an hour and blrmished a great afternoon of small perfect surf.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Get it early in the morning. The afternoon off shores are not dependable for the next few days.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are interesting peaks everywhere in the bay. The main peak in front of the hotel is especially consistent right now. Try the rock at the north end of Playa Grande for a "gettaway".

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Ask at the hotel about the student's quarters and apartments for unbelievable bargains during the high season in Playa Grande right in front of the main breaks.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Winds have been almost only off shore for several weeks now. The water temp has dropped making us dig out our insulated rashguards. A nice swell during the beginning of the week has tapered off into waist high waves. A swell is predicted for the weekend which could change things.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): This weekend expect lots of sun, lots of wind sand in your beach towel and small pretty surf. Ignore that last part if the swell comes in. Este fin de semana espere mucho sol, mucho viento, arena en su pano y lindas olas pequenas. Si entra el swell, ignora la ultima parte.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Langosta has been a lot better than Tamarindo, recently, and Playa Grande also. In Tamarindo there's been some surf in front of the Diria Hotel and as always at the main beach break south of the estuary.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (12/10)-

Today, we went to witch's rock and ollies point. The waves were very fun. It wasn't huge, but plenty big enough to be fun. It was about chest high to a bit overhead on the sets. The wind was offshore, making perfect conditions. Click here to see the new webcam and pics from today's forecast.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones (12/8)-

We're looking at a "hint" of the new SW swell sneaking in - bigger set waves around the higher tides. Glassy early with light onshore and sideshore winds until late afternoon. Look for consistent chest high surf with bigger size on set waves. Coconut Harry -- "Work Less - Surf More" www.coconutharrys.com

** From Erik, with the Nosara surf report -

Super good surf today in the well overhead range!!! Good form with a higher tide this morning. Matt took some photos, and sent over some of me, which don't show the size of the sets... So, take a look at the form, but add a few feet. The surf was better as the tide was dropping... There were actually some barrels at Guiones.

The Nosara Surf Team, a local surf team that rewards young surfers who stay in school and help their community needs donations! On your next trip down please help us by bringing any old baggies, leashes, lycras, boards, ect... to help our surf team. Surf supplies are hard to get and expensive in Costa Rica, and your junk would make some local groms super stoked! You can drop off supplies at Wanderlust Realty or email me for details here . Thanks, Erik.

** From Marco at Hotel Resort Totem in Playa Cocles -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: 2 pies

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): sol y olas en aumento 5-6 pies domingo.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Overhead waves for the wakeup session Monday, get up early before it's gone with the dropping tide. A foot smaller on Tuesday, and by Wednesday back to chest high with a rare head high set. Thursday is small, too, but on Friday the first overhead sets appear with a 18 second period. By Saturday the overhead sets are the norm, and it stays the same for Sunday and Monday. Past that, consistent head high surf.

Caribbean - Still lots of powerful surf, 1 to 3 foot overhead all day Monday, and leftovers Tuesday morning. By the end of the day it drops down to a foot overhead and by Wednesday drops to head high. Thursday and Friday the waves come in at chest high, more inconsistent during the dropping tide. More NE swell showing for next week.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 12/2 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The head high swell we have been enjoying here is perfect for Playa Grande. It's full of surprises at different tides and on different days. The off shores are cooperating and the water is clear and warm.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Although the tides are moving toward mid day, the off shores are picking up for good conditions. Wear lots of sun protection.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There is surf everywhere in the bay. The rock at the north end of the beach is often overlooked as a great beginners spot when the swell is small. The breaks in the middle of the bay in Palm Beach, which are often overlooked, have been excellent.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (12/1)-

Witch's rock today was very fun. it was about waist to head high, maybe a little bit bigger on the sets. the wind was light at first, then it picked up. It was offshore though, so it didn't hurt the surf. Ollies point had too high of a tide the whole time we were there today, so we only surfed witch's.

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been in the head high to a couple feet overhead range. Bright sunny skies and offshore winds in the mornings switching to onshore by mid afternoon. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): It stays overhead through the first part of the week. Dropping to waist to chest high mid week and picking back up to overhead by next weekend. BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We have full moon low tides running through the mornings this week. That means things will be a little show early but as the tide rises midday the surf will be at it's best. Check out Sapo's at Langosta early and Avellanas or Negra from midday on. ** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Boy am I late , surfs up some overhead sets right here in Jaco and pretty thumpy at Hermosa this a.m., conditions are okay if a bit straight on for the beachbreaks, check Oeste tomorrow in the afternoon , could be good ! Weathers nice and plenty of tourists on the road who need your valuable info too , like how to avoid theft and other problems , remember every thief who gets away with stealing something is stealing your next years and the followings income. If the nice people who come here keep getting ripped off and you don't do something to PREVENT it then you too will feel the pinch in the pocketbook > I know noone wants to risk their lives over some guys backpack but if we just watch and warn the people then the thieves will have nothing to steal and they will have to move on , its not that hard and we do not have room for APATHY [not caring] on this one, lets make Costa Rica a nice place again and anyone living here for more than 10 years knows what a nice place it is when we don't have to be afraid of someone stealing from us or our friends. DON'T LET THE DIRTBAGS AND DRUG ADDICTS RUN OR RUIN OUR LIVES , IF THEY SET-UP SHOP IN FRONT OF YOUR BUSINESS TELL THEM TO "MOVE ON" . If you don't help us to help solve this problem you should LEAVE ! Harsh but true ! If a shop owner in your town seems to get caught with too many stolen boards on a regular basis then don't do business with him or her they are also part of the problem, don't buy anything at a pawn shop or from the local idiot because he gave you a great deal on the nice laptop or camera etc., its probably stolen .Come on lets make it better not just make a few bucks today but make a future for all of us and those that come after us . Thanks A FRIEND IN COSTA RICA !
