CR Surf Report for 1-15-07

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 9, Issue 366
January 15th, 2007

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Waves chest high in most spots with the overhead sets at the better breaks for Tuesday and Wednesday morning. By high tide Wednesday it's chest high, but every half hour a big set, from head high to a foot overhead, comes in perfectly if you're at the right break. It's a good time for a boat trip. By Friday the swell is gone, leaving more waist to chest high surf for a week.

Caribbean - Surf is 2-3 foot overhead, pretty clean with a 9 second period until Thursday, then more closeouts through Friday with the majority of waves overhead. Size for the weekend is more 1-2 foot overhead surf, but inconsistent with lots of smaller waves to catch. Catch surf like this through March and stay comfortable - contact info@...

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 1/14 or posted)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Hey, the Papagayo winds are here, so hold onto your hat! Hold on to your board too and cover your head when you come up for air because fiberglass can fly. Waves this week haven't gotten much above waist high, but they're suppose to pick up to about shoulder in the next day or so.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell should pick up some tomorrow and the tide will be perfect for a nice Sunday morning surf. El swell subira y la manana del domingo sera lindisimo para surfear.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Depends how the swell hits. Places to watch: rivermouth, Pico Grande, the reef in front of Diria. Depende en como llega el swell. Ponga el ojo en: la boca del rio, Pico Grande, el arrecife en frente del Diria.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: It's not flat. There's a great shoulder high wave every once and a while for the patient and lots of little perfect peelers. Light crowds, and amazingly , the water is still warm in spite of the constant off shores.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same, but don't be too suprised if it jumps or flatens out on any given session. It's the Playa Grande focus in at work.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The focus is shifting daily up and down the bay. Look for a spot without other surfers and join the wait.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo - (1/4)

Today was really the bottom of the swell, although there were still some fun longboard waves at avellanas. it was knee to waist high on average, and very clean with light offshore wind. To see the pix, go to - www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been very small the last week or so. Howling offshore wind hasn't helped much with the size.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): A swell from the SW will start to show and should see some head high to a little over head by the beginning of the week. Hopefully the wind will back down a bit. Nothing but sunny and warm all week.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: With the tide high through the middle of the day all this upcoming week, check out Sapo's at Playa Langosta.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: See what's happening at Playa Negra right now. Go to www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com and check it out.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

Hola amigos - it's Coconut Harry reporting from Playa Guiones (Nosara). Surf continues relatively small, but at least fun with good shape on set waves - best times around the higher tides - waist to chest high. Coconut Harry SURF * EAT * SLEEP * REPEAT "Work Less - Surf More" www.coconutharrys.com

** From Erik with the Nosara surf report -(1/11)

Well, there isn't much surf on the beach today, but there were some boobies. A friend caught the action. On another note, we made it to Ostional last night for the turtles, and I have to say that if you happen to be here during Arribada, you have got to check it out. Without telling a fish story, there were probably a thousand turtles on the beach. They were so thick that I was run into twice from stubborn turtles trying to get back to the water. You aren't allowed to use a flash and there was no moon, so I couldn't snap any pics... but if you are in town now, check it out in the next night or two.

The Nosara Surf Team, a local surf team that rewards young surfers who stay in school and help their community needs donations! On your next trip down please help us by bringing any old baggies, leashes, lycras, boards, ect... to help our surf team. Surf supplies are hard to get and expensive in Costa Rica, and your junk would make some local groms super stoked! You can drop off supplies at Wanderlust Realty or email me for details here . Thanks, Erik.

** From Marco at Manuel Antonio Surf School - (1/12)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: For Saturday and Sunday: front of Mar y Sombra: 2 to 3 ft Playitas: 4 to 5 ft Playa Rey & Isla Damas: 6 to 8 ft

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): It will be best to surf in the mornings as this is when the water should be the most glassy.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playitas and Playa Rey

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: How can they ever get smaller? I've seen a small day at Miami beach with larger waves. These have been basically unridable . I've never seen smaller waves in my 4 years living at this beach. Ah, but just this morning (Sunday) we're getting a taste of what should be coming.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Well, at least the weather is expected to be perfect. Actually, as mentioned above, a small event should be coming in Sunday and growing to fruition on Monday. The tide is about perfect for a small swell like this and surfing at mid-tide should be best...say 8:00 am???

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach in front of Dominical. The river mouth to the north looks promising too, but don't go too far north or you'll get into a closed out section.
