New Moon - August 27th

Low Tide - .09 ft at 9:50 am
High Tide -9.45 ft. at 4:03 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Surf for the weekend will be chest to head high with a few
overhead sets Saturday, but dropping a foot by Sunday (the exception
being north towards Witch's Rock, where the surf will be overhead)
From Sunday afternoon until Tuesday, the surf stays smaller, in the
waist to chest high range, but by Tuesday at sunset, one should start
to see a few headhigh + sets sneaking in. The SW swell fills in next
Wed. a.m. with 1-2 foot overhead waves and stays through Thursday (a
dawn patrol high tide is good too). Friday it drops back to headhigh
with no relief for next weekend or the following week (meaning no new
swell expected).

Caribbean - Waves are currently coming in waist to chest high but
dropping down to knee high by Monday. Some nearby tropical activity
should bring in some more chest high surf by next Thursday.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana, the PuraMar surf teacher in Tamarindo -

We've got a good swell running right now with waves shoulder to head
high at the rivermouth, kind of a westerly direction, it seems. Winds
have been going onshore by mid morning most days and by the time the
tide fills in it's a bit stormy. Plenty of good rides to be had,
however, even though it's a tough paddle.
remar mucho.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas):
This weekend looks like it could be setting up for some beautiful
sunset sessions with the remains of the swell and the later high
tides. It's going to depend on the rain patters and whether we get
late afternoon storms or not.
no.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: I predict a great weekend for
the Tamarindo rivermouth area. It's a beautiful place to catch some
sunset waves.

** From Diana, the PuraMar surf teacher in Tamarindo -

Could it be any flatter? I think not! The occasional high tide set
wave is waist high, the rest maybe knee high. We've had some nice off-
shores in the mornings, but really this is madness. If you have small
children (infants?!) that you want to take surfing, now is the time!

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Unless we get a new swell this weekend
would be a good time to go mountain biking, paint your house, go to
Arenal and try to see the volcano.

Nosara Surf Contest - Sunna Garcia as Judge

SURF CONTEST IN NOSARA, Costa Rica- August 9-10, 2003

SUNNY GARCIA was in Playa Guiones (the closest beachbreak to Nosara) last month to relax with his family and to judge a locals-only surf contest, hosted by Tim and Tyler Marsh of Safari Surf School. Over 40 participants surfed in four different categories - Open, Juniors, Longboard, and Women for new surfboards donated by Sunny himself. Tim Marsh told me the idea started as a "brainfart". "I knew there was a lot of hot surfers in Jaco, but none here were receiving any recognition. I knew Sunny from growing up with him, and he was into helping out. He's a very laid back individual, and he's 'O'hana' (Hawaiian for 'family') His brother Tyler at Safari Surf School led the effort to organize the contest. Tim also thanked Mike at Casa Tucan for hosting the guests, Charlie for his help during and after the contest, and Mango Surf Shop for helping to get the beach permits and donating some prizes.

Some of the hot surfers around Nosara include: Vibito, Christian, Brody, Gisella, Josenia, and Pio. The opening heats of the weekend had the best surf, offshore and overhead on the sets. By the last heat on the first day, onshore winds and a high tide rip made it difficult for competitors to find good waves. However, the final day had offshore winds through the finals and the 200 plus spectators had an excellent show of local talent. In the Open finals were Vibito from Garza, Choco from Samara, and Brody and Pio from Guiones. The Junior division winner received a 6.2 Akila Aipa Squash tail, the top woman got a replica Larry Bartleman shape, and the Open champion received one of Sunny's 6.3 Da Hui boards. Another board was a 6.4 Bamboo Boards Epoxy rounded pintail that was raffled off to a lucky visitor.

After the contest ended, I had a chance to speak to Sunny about his experience in Costa Rica:

GG - When was your first trip to Costa Rica?
SG - This year, I arrived only a few days ago.

GG - Where did you surf and how was it?
SG - I've only surfed around here in Nosara. I had some knee surgery a couple of months ago so I am still going easy on it, but it's been fun.

GG - What do like about Costa Rica?
SG - Everything. It's laid back, the people are mellow (most of them), and there are good waves.

GG - How was the idea started for a contest in Nosara?
SG - It was Tim and Tyler's (Marsh) idea. I was planning a trip down to visit them and they asked if I could help judge the contest. I said, "Sure, why not?"

GG - How do you feel on the level of surfing in the country?
SG - It's very good. There are kids ripping out there. And some of them could do even better if they had more resources, support from the surf industry, and more contests.

GG - When do you think someone from here will be ready for the WQS?
SG - Some of them are ready now. The difficulty of being on tour is that it's hard to get started. There are a lot of costs: places to stay, boards, and travel expenses.

GG - Any advice you would give to the groms who want to surf for their career?
SG - Just never give up. Never give up....

Sunny Garcia is currently sponsored by Da Hui, Backyard Boards, Spy, Boost Mobile, and Honda. He should be back next year when hopefully more participants from around the country will compete. Safari Surf School in Playa Guiones is a camp where guests are going to be in the water with the owners. They will get to hang with the locals and submerge themselves in the culture, eating meals and going on tours with the group, and ultimately becoming one of an extended family. Full Moon - August 11th

High Tide - 8.58 ft. at 10:59 am
Low Tide - 1.13 ft at 5:22 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Next week is the wrong week to be in Costa Rica for surf.
There will be something out there, Saturday morning starts out chest
to head high, a few overhead sets if you wait an hour or two. Then it
drops a foot on Sunday and another by Monday. Throughout the rest of
the week, waist high, some chest high sets with the tide pushing in,
but hightide comes in the afternoon, right along with steady onshore
winds. Try to get a few early morning barrels at the best
beachbreaks. And relax until next weekend, when another smaller SSW
swell pushes the surf back up to head high.

Caribbean - The last bits of an ENE swell are nipping at the
coastline, surf waist high at best. Expected to drop over the
weekend, flat to knee high all next week until the weekend.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Greg at Witch's Rock -

Today it was offshore all day at the rock, with surf in the waist to
head high range, with one bomber every twenty minutes. About seven
boats were out, but there were lots of peaks which spread everyone
out. The morning high tide made it impossible to surf Ollies.
Yesterday surfed Negra, chest to head high and almost nobody on it.
Lefts were coming in down the beach at higher tides. Looks to get
smaller over the weekend. Check Grande at the incoming tide or
Langosta early.

** From Dennis at Tamarindo Adventures -

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana, the PuraMar surf teacher in Tamarindo -

The small south swell continues here in Tamarindo bay. More and more
sand is continuing to pile up making long gentle waves near the
rivermouth. The winds have been light offshore for the last few days
inspite of the clouds.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): This weekend expect morning and sunset
sessions. If you're a longboarder, you're in luck! Waves are waist to
chest high.
atardecer. Dichoso si tienes un longboard! Las olas estan de a la
cintura de al pecho.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA- El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: There probably won't be too
many bad places this weekend! Tamarindo should be very nice and not
too crowded early morning.
mananas.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: I'm ready to
begin surf lessons again and check out my website: www.puramar.com

** From Joe at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AAREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - There has seemed to be surf every
day this week, the winds have been great w/ light offshores (heavier
at Witch's Rock and Ollie's) Both Witch's/Ollie's really stood out on
Tuesday July 29 and Wednesday July 30, if these winds keep up this
coming swell should prove to be one of the best surf weeks of the
summer....

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - A new SW swell is
in place to hit southern CR friday, should get to the
Tamarindo/Witch's/Ollie's area by early Saturday?....very hard to
tell with the satellite maps currently, but we should see surf
increase from current chest/head high range to WELL overhead sets at
exposed breaks. I'm hoping for epic summer surf, very nice winds
offshore with light crowds....this could be very fun.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - Witch's and Ollie's
will be all-time....uh- I mean they'll suck...don't go. Frijoles will
be the best, and thank god there isn't a surf map to the spot.
Perfect right barrels mark the spot.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Robert August Surf & Turf surf contest
scheduled for August 3rd 8AM Playa Tamarindo in front of WRSC. Come
out and support your local grom, he/she might be the next CR champ
you know.

** From Carrie at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

Head high to a few feet overhead on the sets. Offshore winds most of
the day, aided by storm clouds. It's a bit junky because it's a new
swell, but hopefully it will clean up a bit. A lot of backwash at
dead high tide.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): We're moving into morning sessions with
the hope of an additional afternoon session if the wind cooperates.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The main peak at Grande.
