AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

1) From Carrie at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (Welcome back!!)

Today saw chest to head high waves and a calm to slightly offshore wind
at
Playa Grande. An hour or so after
high tide saw some nice waves with the crowd dissipating a bit. The
Christmas
crowds are definitely in full effect, but at Grande you can always find
either
a brief window or a relatively unmolested peak, if you're diligent.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de
semana (clima y olas):

With high tide moving further and further into the afternoon, we'll be
at the
mercy of the wind. The weather is typical for this particular time of
year with
the sky crying for baby Jesus, as the local expression go. So we're
left with
lots of clowds, some sprinkles, and a fickle wind. But this time of
year, it
can always all come together for a great session, so stay on it!

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear
este
fin de semana en su area:

Grande will have some decent size waves, similar to what we've had all
week,
with chest to head high, to maybe a bit overhead on the sets. Pray for
the
right wind and a partied-out crowd!!

2) From Diana at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

We've seen typical Tamarindo 3-4 foot waves this week between Pico
Pequeno and
the rivermouth. Langosta is breaking on the outside in the mornings,
but
somewhat sluggishly. Unseasonable on-shore winds accompany these cloudy
days
and have blown out our midday high tides. Hemos visto olas tipicas de
Tamarindo
aplastado
las mareas altas de mediodia.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de
semana (clima y olas):

If and when the predicted swell arrives, we should see the surf grow a
few
feet, but the main variable right now is whether or not we get our
summer winds
back for the weekend.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear
este
fin de semana en su area:

Look for low or mid tide breaks where you can surf in the morning
before it
gets blown out. Langosta rivermouth or beach break will probably be the
best
rides in town.

3) From Steve at Tropico Latino Lodge in Mal Pais -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS & CONDITIONS:

Surf finally appeared this morning after a lousy month. Swell has been
building
this a.m. and it is 4' on sets SW and super clean at 1 p.m.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND:

Hope that this swell continues to push in, though it is not expected to
get
much bigger.

BEST PLACE TO SURF IN YOUR AREA:

Beachbreaks, Sta Teresa in the morning, Carmen in the afternoon if it
stays
glassy.

JACO & HERMOSA

4) From Tommy at Fuego del Sol in Playa Hermosa -

12/26 - The waves have come up out of The Northwest. There is some
south in it
as well. High tide was around 12:00PM. Bejuco (past Esterillos) is
starting to
see the arrival of a Northwest with some south mixed in. It seems to be
a great
direction for us here in Esterillos. Heremosa seems to have sets in the
head
high range.Dennis Christopher and Tobit McLean, are doing their Endless

DOMINICAL & SOUTHERN PACIFIC

5) From Greg at the Adventure Education Center in Dominical-

Afternoon showers have cooled off the morning heat. Waves are in
breaking waist
to chest, with a head high + set coming every 10 minutes. Offshores
early.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de
semana (clima y olas):

This weekend waves hope to be head high with sets one to two feet
overhead.
Midmorning sessions will be fun, check out some points early. Expect a
lil
crowd.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear

I would find a quieter beach with smaller, but cleaner surf. Look for a
new
spot that receives a NW swell good.

making for nice shape.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

1) From Carrie at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande
(Welcome back!!)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones:

The last few days have been chest high with fair conditions
and the offshores blowing consistently all day. Yesterday
and this morning saw the weakest swell of the week with
head high waves at best at the main peak of Grande with
smaller waves to the north and south. This morning was
small, with the main peak of Grande the
only spot up and down the beach offering the occasional
decent wave. The tides have been offering double sessions,
with early morning and afternoon go-outs. This afternoon's
session saw perhaps the first signs of a new swell; the
waves were solid head high on the sets, and the shape was
excellent, hollow and peeling, with the offshores blowing
with particular force at dusk. The crowd was obnoxious,
however.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a
pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The word on the
street is that a new SW swell is arriving and we've seen
it's first impressions this evening. If so, then this
weekend should be great, with a decent swell and plenty of
offshores, as well as propitious tides for two lengthy
doublesessions.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor
area:

The main peak at Grande and the next peak to the north have
been catching this week's swell the best, and it looks like
more of the same for the weekend. Beware of the wolf pack,
however!!

2) From Diana at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones:

No sign of the much-talked-about swell. The winds have been
a bit shifty, but mostly off-shore on waves an average of
waist high. Langosta broke a bit bigger as always. Really
high high tides made the estuaries a hefty paddle.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a

This weekend I expect Tamarindo to continue with small
waves and favorable winds. Este fin de semana espero que
Tamarindo seguira con olas pequenas y vientos favorables.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor
area:

This weekend would be a great time to surf Playa Grande,
Langosta at sunrise on the incoming tide, points on either
end of Avellanas or anywhere that has a fun little break on
a small swell.
pequena.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:

Alegra Childrens' Park. Una venta de panes y queques se

and low at around 12:40PM. Hopefully the wind doesn´t come
on it this afternoon, so it will be fun through late
morning. The surf camp crew has been catching fun waves all
over and looking forward to the latest pulse due this

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

1) From Carrie at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande
(Welcome back!!)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones:

The waves have been running head high to a few feet
overhead all week with a strong west swell in the water.
Unfortunately, the wind hasn't been in sync with the tides
at Playa Grande, with the onshores coming on by the time
the tide gets right. However, early morning incoming tide
sessions at the Tamarindo Rivermouth seemed to have been
the call, with the winds still light offshore and the swell
hitting well overhead on the sets, especially earlier in
the week. The swell definitetly seemed to die off today and
the wind was onshore as early as 9 am in Playa Grande.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a

With the weather starting to clear and the sun returning
after the early week doldrums, let's hope that the
offshores start kicking in as the dry season starts hitting
second gear. The swell at least seems to be holding at
chest to head high and once the tides start moving towards
favoring early morning sessions over the weekend, we could
all be in for some decent surf even if the wind turns
onshore later in the day, as seems to be the pattern right
now. From what we've heard, though, a cold front is moving
into the East Coast of the US and this, of course, should
bring us our beloved offshores!

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor
peak at Playa Grande for the dawn patrol over the weekend,
and then maybe hit Tamarindo Rivermouth with incoming
tide--and let's hope the offshores start doing their thang!

2) From Diana at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones:

There were head high and overhead waves near the estuary
this week however the wind shifted onshore. Much of the
swell closed out and currents were unbelievable. Habian

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a

If the swell they´re talking about hits, we should have
some fun waves in Tamarindo provided that the wind changes.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor

The rivermouth has been giving us some nice rights that
should be fun this weekend and Pico Pequeno breaks big on a
swell.

3) From Steve at Tropico Latino Lodge in Santa Teresa -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS:

Swell is 2 - 3' out of the SW. Not very well organised but
cleaner than it's been the last few days. Best conditions,
curiously, have been around lunchtime.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND:

Surf should continue to clean up as we move into December.
Possibility of a bit more swell this w/e.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND:

The nearest beachbreak. Sta Teresa should be good in the
morning with some swell.

4) From Pura Vida Surf Camp in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones: Waves have been weird all week with onshore
and side shore conditions coupled with a west swell.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a

This week should cleanup with a new SW swell expected by
Saturday.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor

All spots have been fun. We just waiting for the offshore

6) From Tommy at Fuego del Sol in Playa Hermosa -

The waves are holding steady at about chest high with
bigger sets. Bejuco and Tulin are probably head high on the
in-coming tides. Low tide this morning is around 8:00AM,
and high at around 2:20PM. Hopefully the wind doesn´t come
on it, so it will be fun for the in-coming tide. The surf
camp crew has been catching fun waves all over from the
latest pulse. Our in house pros are Dennis Christopher and

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

1) From Diana at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones:

Summer mornings and winter afternoons have made for small
off-shore sessions early in the day if you like to
longboard. Waves are tiny: maybe waist or chest high if
you're lucky.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a

More of the same! The afternoon low tides mean that in
Tamarindo the time to surf is morning. If we get rainy
mornings this weekend, fix your board or learn to sew...
aprenda cocer...

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor

My fingers are crossed for Langosta, an incoming mid-tide
break that should be prime although small) for dawn patrol.

Monkey Bar at sunset and continue to Pasatiempo's anual
bash. Dos fiestas de Halloween en esta semana! Empiece en

2) From Steve at Tropico Latino Lodge in Santa Teresa -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS:

Lots of rain this week; however weather has been improving
since yesterday evening though surf is still untidy with
early onshores. Not much swell around either with sets a
mushy chest high.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND:

Not much swell, but hopefully cleaner conditions.

BEST PLACE TO SURF:

Playa Carmen usually works best in small conditions on the
incoming tide; pack a longboard.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The expected SSW swell gives the southern
Pacific coast waves head high to 1 foot overhead
Friday with a 11 second period. Northern Pacific will
see similar size, but a bit bumpier. The biggest sets
fall mid afternoon on the rising tide. Saturday and
Sunday the bigger sets thin out, and by Monday is will
be down to head high. Tuesday will be smaller, to
about chest high. For the rest of week, it will stay
the same, chest to head with great shape due to an
early morning high tide with those friendly offshores.
Watch for rain clouds for the wind to swtich early

Caribbean - Buju Banton plays Carnival 2001 in Limon

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

1) From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas
y condiciones:

There have been some fair late afternoon sessions,
with waves ranging from waist- to chest-high. However,
brisk onshores have been creating pretty messy
conditions over the past couple of days.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que

There will definitely be some good dawn sessions as
high-tide is moving into the early morning time
window, and since it is always offshore in the
morning. There will also be waves late in the
afternoon, but as the wind will have picked up by
then, mornings are the best bet.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El

The farther south on Playa Grande, the better. The
effects of the onshores aren't as bad at the southern
end of the beach.

2) From Diana at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo
-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas
y condiciones:

The wind has not exactly been in our favor this week
although it has been shifty enough to sometimes
cooperate. Waves have been mostly knee to chest high
at the Tamarindo beach break. Espeically dangerous
currents in Langosta!!

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que

Early to bed, early to rise! High tides at sunrise and
sunset will be fun although small since wind is
lighter or even off-shore. A dormir temprano y
levantarse temprano! Las mareas altas al amanacer y
atardecer seran divertidos aun pequenas porque los
vientos estan livanios o off-shore.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El

The beach break doesn't close out with these small
waves. If you can get a ride, try Avellanas!
Si
consiques un ride, prueba Avellanas!

NICOYA (N)

1) From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas
y condiciones:
The swell arrived here earlier than expected, and 6-8
foot faces have been rolling into Playa Grande for the
past two days. Since the swell is still growing, it's
a little bumpy and unpredictable right now, but it
will clean up over the next couple of days.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que
The waves will clean up as the swell becomes more
organized. It should be big and clean. Look for
overhead sessions in the morning--the tide will be
high and the wind will be offshore. It could get
really, really good.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El

smaller, but still sizable, waves abound to the north
and south. Find your own peak and have fun!

this weekend. There might be some funk thrown in by
hurricane Julliet, so watch for peaks and double up
closeouts.

Caribbean - Copied and pasted from last week ---
nothing coming in for the right coast, perfect for
crystal blue waters and scuba diving or snorkeling.
Afternoon showers daily, but no waves. Maybe a waist

of a wait. Overall, we are having fun and fast surf at
Playa Grande.

like it will continue into the next week.

small.

Looks like it's going to get considerably bigger with
swell direction switching more to the SW. if the

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

1) From Louis at Las Tortugas Lodge in Playa Grande-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas
y condiciones:

There has been some juice pumping into Playa Grande.
The past week has not seen waves less than chest- to
head-high, with bigger sets. The waves have been
pretty bumpy, however, and not terribly clean.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que

If you want to surf, there will be surf. Even better,
the crowds will be minimal. You'll have good-sized
waves but it will continue to be pretty shifty, with
peaks all over the beach. Early mornings and evening
sessions will be best.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA -

The Main Peak at Playa Grande always has something to

peaks have been coming through, yielding fun rewards
for patient surfers.

2) From Steve at Tropico Latino Lodge in Santa Teresa
(north of Mal Pais):

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS.

Really fun conditions in the 1st part of the week with
beachbreaks working well, 2 - 5' and glassy all day -
with some W mixed in there. We are now being affected
by a tropical depression and the waves are a little
more untidy, though still rideable. Lots of rain.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND:

Perhaps a little bigger, similar direction. Conditions
are hard to predict at this time of year as the rains
reach their peak.

BEST PLACE TO SURF IN YOUR AREA THIS WEEKEND:

Playa Carmen, other beachbreaks

3) From Tommy at Fuego del Sol in Playa Hermosa -

The waves are still on the small side, waist to chest
high in Upper Hermosa. The wind came on it early,
around 7. With low tide being around 10:45AM and
onshore wind, it´s not the optimum conditions, but the
swell is kinda peaky so it could be fun. When the tide

4) From the director of AEC Spanish School in

Surfed chest to head high slop at peak high tide, 10
foot +. A few said it was great in the morning with
the tide sucking out and the peaks barreling overhead.
Right before dark it looked like it was setting up
with head high surf outside and clean waist high
peelers on the inside. Winds were on it by 9 a.m, but
stayed light. Expecting great early morning surf at
the beachbreak in the head high + range all weekend
with offshore and a.m. high tides.

TIDES *for Friday

Low Tide 1.61 ft at 5:14 AM
High Tide 8.12 ft at 11:41 AM

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The south swells that have rounded New
Zealand last week are now showing up on the coast with
1 to 2 foot overhead sets, peaky sections due to mixed
swells and short periods (12 seconds). By Sunday
afternoon things should drop down to head high and
stay that way for Monday and Tuesday. Then by next
Wed., a longer period 16 second swell puts the height
back up to 2+ overhead faces. Daily rain down south.

Caribbean - Go over to the Pacific. Expect nothing
more than waist high, unless a mid to high tide push
makes the beachbreaks enjoyable with an occasional
chest high set. Mid morning or late in the day is the
best call.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

1) From Louis at Las Tortugas Lodge in Playa Grande-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas
y condiciones:
The waves have been from chest to head with some
slightly overhead sets, but a stiff sideshore wind has
created pretty messy conditions. The early mornings
have been best, with the wind picking up mid-morning
and remanining the rest of the day.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que

The rains are finally beginning to hit Playa Grande
with consistency. There is definitely some swell out
there, but the weather has been inhibiting great waves
from forming. The mornings will probably remain fun

3) From Tommy at Fuego del Sol in Playa Hermosa -

Thursday, September 13, 2001 6:00 PM

The SW pulse continued to show bigger surf today.
Tulin was overhead but the wind was on it early. The
Rancho Coral surf camp crew headed back to Esterillos
and scored overhead surf with a steady onshore breeze.
Later in the afternoon we headed to Terraza for low
tide, although it had size, the wind and runouts made
it difficult. Low tide this afternoon was at 5:00PM.
Our in house pros are Dennis Christopher and Tobit
McLean. They have started their summer surf clinics
so, call Tobit for details and info 506 643 2078 or

DOMINICAL & SOUTHERN PACIFIC

4) From the director of AEC Spanish School in
Dominical:

It was bigger and hairy this Thursday. The swell
filled in with head high to 3 foot overhead faces
which had short rides at the beachbreak. The point was
not working at low tide and early morning rain made
the water look like cafe con leche. Hoping for a nice
offshore going to high tide session on Friday, and
then look for a lower tide spot this weekend.

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report for August 30th , 2001

Brought to you each Friday evening by local surf
businesses throughout Costa Rica. See
http://www.crsurf.com/links.html for pics., forecast
links, and tide charts.

Primer Torneo - Circuito Nacional de Surf Costa Rica

Septiembre 14 y 15, Playa Jaco (NEW date!)

Send me a note if you are interested in working on a
Costa Rican chapter of the Surfrider Foundation -
Protecting the World's Oceans, Waves, and Beaches.

Friday TIDES

Low Tide 1.95 ft at 7:14 AM
High Tide 7.94 ft at 1:25 PM

(These are for Puntarenas. It has been noticed that
Guanacaste tides are about an hour later)

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The strong SSW has kept this coast happy
with head high surf continuing into Friday. It should
drop to chest high for Saturday and down to waist to
stomach by Monday. Tuesday it is the same, but have
some hope for chest high+ surf for Wednesday. A
sizable direct South swell will be pushing in for the
next weekend. Some models show a 19 second period so
this is the time to make travel plans to hit those
South facing beaches and points. High tide will also
be in the early morning next Saturday.

Caribbean - Continued storms in the Caribbean Sea are
sending short period chest to head high surf for
Friday and Saturday morning. Conditions will worsen by
Sunday, dropping to about waist high. Then for Monday
on it looks dismal, knee to maybe a waist high set for
the next few days.

The waves were a little smaller today, but still
overhead sets. It´s about 2-4 feet from the back with
bigger sets. There are some fun looking barrels and
there´s no wind. High tide was at 11:30AM. Esterillos
was also really fun this morning for the in-coming
tide, with head high peaky barrels. Our in house pros

5) From Jason & Karla at the Green Iguana surf camp in
Dominical:

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS -

Surf has been a few feet overhead for the last few
days. The Point was juicy and doin' it's thang.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) -

It's been a dry rainy season this year, and wer'e
looking for more of the same. Not much rain, and the
surf looks like it's gonna be shrinking over the next
4-5 days, however there is hope on the distant
horizon.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA -

Playa Dominical picks up the most swell in the area,
and should be good even if it's flat (waist high).
