Overview - Caribbean Coast - Perfect snorkeling conditions to start the week, but a tropical disturbance is expected to cross the country and strengthen in the Caribbean, pushing in some choppy overhead surf for Thursday and Friday.

Pacific Coast - It's a double whammy this week. Leftover SSW swell keeps the surf overhead to start the week, then a West wind swell picks up from tropical storm formation. This combines with another SSW swell Thursday, pushing the surf up to double overhead for two days. It cleans up Saturday and Sunday with dropping size and better form. More SW waves are expected the following week as well.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (5/25)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:Decent early morning, head high, sets are perfectly matched with the high tides - but somewhat mixed up by the proximity of the rainy season just south of us. There are lots of people out in the afternoon for the on shore messy surf.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The early morning tides are right, and the possibility of an afternoon session if it glasses off, but anything can affect the quality right now as the first part of the rainy season moves in.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (5/25)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf here at Playa Negra is small and mushy. Waist high with sets up the to chest high and pretty much poor shape. Cloudy skies with light onshores. Water temp is 82 degrees.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Small surf continues for the next couple days with the rainy skies and onshore wind. The surf picks up out of the south Tuesday and peaks Wednesday some head high sets with fair shape. We've got high tide running through the mornings this week and that will help focus the swell into Playa Negra and Playa Avellanas.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Negra and Playa Avellanas. Playa Grande could have some good surf early.

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones (5/26) -

Surf today is looking OK at report time as we had some really heavy rains last night. They acutally woke me up a few times. It started clearing up around 7 this morning, which is why the report is running a bit behind schedule. The photos were taken at a dead high tide and the weather was just starting to break, so there is hope for a late mornin session. Town is pretty much dead right now, which is a good thing as Kemper has been super fun to play with this month, so I am happy to hang out at the house and send her on tickle missions.

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais (5/25) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: 2 to 3 foot. Fun waves. Best at mid tide. Light showers.

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Shoulder high and peaky but pestered by wind and the cold, muddy river water. Good in the mornings and early afternoon if the wind isn't too strong.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): We have a big event coming on Wednesday, but its a bit hard to believe. I think it is going to be a near shore event and big but crazy - waves going this way and that all on top of each other. It could be fun or it could be out of control. We'll see.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: In front of Coco's there is a good left going off. In front of the river mouth there is a good right. Between the river mouth and Coco's there is a lot of cold muddy water.

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (5/17)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The tides are moving into the afternoon now, and the liklihood of good surf is remote although everyone seems to be enjoying the Florida-like conditions anyway.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The head high swell has nice shape, but the light on shores are keeping us from having great surf in the early afternoon. Pray for rain.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Pick a peak - the light crowds will probably continue.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (5/18)

The nice swells we've been having for so long are gone. Replaced by waist to chest high waves coming through every once in a while. These have been nice mornings for a mask and snorkel. Beautiful sunny skies in the mornings with those big puffy white clouds floating around up there. Light offshore wind in the mornings and blowing out onshore in the afternoons. Water temp is 84 degrees. Some rain in the late afternoons / evenings. Coming up, more of the same. Not much going on storm wise in the underworld last week so we are pretty much waveless for the next few days. A storm that went through the South Pacific a few days ago will bring some steep south swells into Central America but may be a bit too south for Playa Negra. It won't happen until next weekend anyways. So get out the longboards and lots of sunscreen. It's a long wait in between those waist high wonders. Get out there early and you'll solo. Check out some great pics daily at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones (5/18) -

Good morning folks... I hope you guys are having a great weekend. Last night our crew headed to Chandi's new restaurant in Garza. Chandi used to run Il Basilico, which was shut down, but he has now moved his pizza oven down about 150meters south to another little bar. Garza is a great place to hang out on the beach and watch the sunset over Punta Guiones.

For surf today we are looking at a building swell that will peak this afternoon in the head high range. It is looking real fun on the beach... I was worried as it rained pretty good last night, but it cleaned up real quick. The winds are light offshore and we have a pushing low tide... those are some of my favorite conidtions... should be a little skate park out there today... keep an eye out for Lluigi and the boys doing some silly tricks.

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais (5/17) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Current swell brings some head high sets. Light winds throughout the day.

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco (5/17) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y cond iciones: Okay heres the scoop ! We have been off playing COWBOY in Arizona for the last week , thanks to "COWBOY''Terri Flemming for the great adventure including the 8 mile hike and trail ride into Fossil Creek and the adventure to Tonto Natural bridge along with the suggestion of Cowboy Club in Sedona for a great BUFFALO burger ! I couldn't believe how beautiful the South West was and how great the people were but yep no surf so I cant fill you in ! Next week we will keep you in the loop surf wise but if you want to go on "VACA" and do it somewhere new and exciting let us know and we will hook you up with Terri and Cowboy BILL and help you have great time too ! Thanks Terri it was great and we have some great photos too ! Pura Vida AMERICAN STYLE !

** From Steve at Jazzys River House in Dominical (5/17) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: saturday morning low tide. mostly blue skies, small waves and clean conditions. yesterday we had mild storm conditions with strong onshore winds most of the day - poor conditions. today looks promising...a nice longboard day like last wednesday and thursday.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): back to summer weather with small but clean surf, somewhat peaky and overall quite mellow and fun.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: as small as it is Dominical would have to be the best bet.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Dominicals' lifeguard program is expanding and restructuring and looking forward to the arrival of our new lifeguard captain: Andrew Webster from Encinitas CA. Welcome aboard Andrew.

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (5/10)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Good conditions in the morning and afternoon are allowing us to ride some well overhead, powerful, surf. If it gets much bigger we'll have to slip down the beach to Tamarindo . It is cloudier every day as the rainy season moves towards us from the south where it has
already begun.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The tides are right for the morning window, so somewhere in the bay it should be surfable in case it gets too big out front.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (5/11)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been head high to a couple feet over head on the sets. This swell we are into now is too south for Playa Negra so a lot of the waves are closing out. Partly cloudy in the mornings with rain in the afternoons as we have officially moved into the rainy season. Water temp is 84 degrees.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): This south swell will peak on Sunday with well over head sets. The beginning of the week will see a decrease in surf as this swell fades. Chest high sets for midweek and then more south swell for the end of the work week and into next weekend.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We have high tide running through the mornings this week and that means Playa Negra early. There was only one guy out there this morning for almost an hour..

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Naked Watusi warriors throw down their spears and pick up surfboards. Photos at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Steve at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones (5/10) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Big waves 5-7ft in Guiones but unorganized and closing out. It could be one of those swells where you need to check it out during the day to see if conditions change.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell should back down on Sunday and the rest of next week. Hopefully giving us some cleaner waves. The best bet is forst ting in the moring and the late afternoon session. The wind has been really laying down in the late afternoon giving us some fun sunset sessions.

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones (5/11) -

Well, yesterday we had our first real rain... it felt so good sleeping last night... we are about at the end of our A/C season, and back to fans and open windows... But, since it rained like crazy last night, you may want to hold off of the morning session. It isn't looking real good today, and last year I got a funky cold right after the first rains. I look at it like this... we have been dry now for almost 6 months... that is a lot of fertilizer, pesticide, monkey poop, that is all washing into our bay this morning. Don't get me wrong, Guiones is about as clean as it gets... and I am sure you will be fine, just rinse out the ears today...

Surf is looking like the rainy season, which I love cause we have all sorts of crazy sections... like a little skate park in the head high to a bit overhead range today. When they jack up right, there are some barrel sections, but you gotta be on your game to get'm... Have a great day, and we will see you back in the morning...

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais (5/10) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Big southwest swell, peaking over the weekend. Double overhead - light winds in the afternoon, some showers. Best at mid-tide.

** From Steve at Jazzys River House in Dominical (5/12) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: 7am monday morning . blue sky, snappy offshore breeze, clean conditions on the incoming tide. bigger set waves well overhead and dumping/mostly closed out. half a dozen surfer picking off shoulders only. lots of water moving, tough paddle out/river surprisingly clear (some hard rain lately) but full. strong rip.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): continued light rain expected with heavy water and overhead powerful waves.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: maybe the point?

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: dominical has hired a new lifeguard to replace founder and leader Matt Haley. Matt is taking a needed break from the beach, working in Florida . New lifeguard, Andrew Webster is from Encinitas, CA and hopes to be here in Domninical by mid-june if not before.

Overview - Caribbean Coast - The week starts off quiet, but a ESE swell sets up near Venezuela and pushes in some chest high surf going into the weekend.

Pacific Coast - The current SW swell is giving the entire coast some overhead surf through Tuesday morning. This fades through the day, dropping down to head high by Wednesday up north, a lil bigger down south. More of the same Thursday and Friday morning, but by dusk surfers see a few 1-2 foot overhead sets. More of them Saturday, and the full SSW arrives Sunday pushing waves up to double overhead.

AREA REPORTS

** From Carlos at Costa Rica Aventuras in Playa de Coco (5/2)-

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (5/3)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We are seeing some Florida type rideable surf even though the high tides are in the afternoon and the wind is coming onshore before noon. The swell has been constant at just about the right head high plus size.

WHAT TO EXPECT (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar (clima y olas): As the tides get late we could get lucky with an afternoon glass off.

BEST PLACE TO SURF IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear en su area: The usual focus-in spots are more consistent.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (5/3)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been pumping. Double overhead with mostly good shape. Partly cloudy skies with light offshore or no wind in the mornings, coming on shore before noon everyday. Water temp is 83 degrees.

WHAT TO EXPECT (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar (clima y olas): The swell will start to decrease for the start of the new week. Head high with just overhead sets and continuing smaller as we work our way into the week. The start of the rainy season is going to happen any day now.

BEST PLACE TO SURF IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear en su area: We have low tide in the mornings now. Negra if you Don't mind the rocks or Avellanas if you do mind the rocks.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Check out the latest Playa Negra slide shows at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Steve at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones (5/3) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waves are 6-8 ft. with stormy conditions. Winds turning onshore early.

WHAT TO EXPECT (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar (clima y olas): The swell should continue through the weekend. Hopefully the waves will clean up with some better shape. Wase are expected to drop in size early next week.

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones (5/4) -

Head high surf with overhead sets. Waiting for higher tides to clean it up.

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais (5/3) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Solid overhead sets. Good shape when the wind isn't on it. Light rain.

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco (5/3) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Good size out there but we need some RAIN to drive away the closeouts ! Business is good and plenty of people around town . Boca was on fire if a bit small with excellent shape today ! Have fun ! Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF !

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical (5/3) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:

Shoulder to slightly overhead started today (Sunday). On shore breeze isn't too bad and mid-day surf at the mid to high tide works ok. Possibly there will be enough tide this afternoon to get an early evening session in.

WHAT TO EXPECT (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar (clima y olas): It looks like next weekend may have some bigger waves, but the storm is way down south of Peru , so we won't know for sure until Tuesday or Wednesday.

BEST PLACE TO SURF IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear en su area: The beach was closed out with a strong current over the last few days, but I had a great session today at 11:00 am up by the river mouth. No strong current and I found some nice A-frames.
