NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Small surf all week, mostly waist high with a rare chest high set. A little relief Friday afternoon with a few shoulder high sets from the NW which sticks around Saturday morning. Then back to waist to chest (smaller at protected beaches) until next Friday, when the first SW pulse pushes in overhead surf to south facing beach breaks.

Caribbean - The week begins with surf waist to chest and clean conditions. Then it picks up a foot Tuesday up to head high with an occasional overhead set. Wednesday and Thursday call for 1-2 foot overhead fun surf. Friday is the best day, with consistent 1-3 foot overhead surf - smacking the reef breaks best. Saturday and Sunday sizes shrink two feet but still a lot of waves to catch.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Very nice head high, to just overhead, surf is capping off a beautiful week of small surf with perfect conditions. Everybody is here.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are waves everywhere in the bay with the focus just to the south of the main peak.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Tamarindo has had a week of waves that are excellent for learning to surf--about waist high and held up by the off-shores. The water is chilly so bring your warm water-wear. Esta semana Tamarindo ha tenido olas perfectas para aprender a surfear--de a la cintura y con el viento off-shore. El agua esta fria, asi que traiga su wetsuit.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same is forecast for the weekend and into next week. The tide is right for morning sessions, so set your alarm clock. Hay mas de lo mismo pronosticado para este fin de semana y la semana proxima. La marea esta buena para surfear en las mananas, asi que ponga el despertador.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: At mid tide the rivermouth is pitching some fast little rights, Pico Pequeno is breaking close to the shore and for more exciting surf, there's always Langosta. Hay unas derechas rapidas en la boca del rio a la media marea, en Pico Pequeno sale una ola bonita cerca de la playa y para surf mas emocionante siempre esta Langosta.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

Just in time for the next leg of the National Contest, we got surf! Looks like shoulder high to bigger on set waves with occasional over head rogues pushing in. High tides in the mornings and light offshores.

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Well I dont know about the first south but the waves at Oeste were quite fun today , 3/5 ft faces and nice and glassy , crowds were light in the a.m. but word had it the hords were on their way the evening session. Weather is right on but the wind is a factor so be on it early a.m. for now ! Pura Vida, Chuck and the crew at W.O.W. SURF !

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: We actually had something of a "swell" for the last week, but alas, it is shrinking. Today, the "sets" are coming about once every 15 minutes to shoulder high. Nothing but bumps in between.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): What little we have today will be shrinking steadily through Wednesday of next week. This is as dismal as it gets around here.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The Internet.

Pacific - Get up early Monday to catch a little leftover west swell, clean head high with an hourly overhead set and offshores most of the day. Then fading quickly, back down to chest to head at best on Tuesday. Then small - sorry to say it - for the next ten days.... Waist high surf with a rare chest high set... Better spot showing chest high waves with a shoulder high set. Not much, time to evacuate to a Caribbean bungalow on the beach.

Caribbean - The swell arives from the NNE on Monday evening, pushing surf up to head high. Stays head to overhead on Tuesday and a few 1-2 foot overhead sets show up Wednesday, then fades out Thursday. Friday the swell changes sources, now arriving from the ESE and more consistent overhead sets through the weekend and continuing next week.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 2/17 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf finally started to come up a little toward the end of the week, but the wind in the afternoon for high tide has been on shore. This is surely one of the worst Playa Grande Feb. weeks for surf we can remember.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The head high swell is still here and the afternoon off shores will probably begin to hold on Sunday. Daybreak sessions should become possible by the middle of the week.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We've been going down to the Tamarindo Estero mouth on the service road in the morning for incoming. This swell is hitting the entire bay with lots of peaks everywhere.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (2/17)-

The waves were really fun today at playa grande. From about 9:00-11:45 there were some great little barrels, from waist to shoulder high with some head high sets. we nicknamed the wave from the first photo below "the brown monster", as it was a pretty solid, powerful barrel, full of sand, breaking in very shallow water. The winds turned onshore at 11:45 and the conditions got much worse. Check out the site to see the pictures.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We have shoulder to head high plus surf with fair to good shape and offshores with sunny skies.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Head high plus surf from mostly the NW. Backs down to smaller as the week progresses.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: With low tide running through the mornings this week spots like Avellanas rivermouth, Sapo's in Langosta will be the call. If the wind stays offshore through midday check out Playa Negra for some island style bowls.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

Hola from Playa Guiones (Nosara), It's chest to occasionally bigger on set waves around the higher tides. The swell has dropped over the last couple of days, but still fun and, actually, the shape appears to be improving = less closeouts. BIC Surfboards for sale (new & used) - contact me for price & availability. Coconut Harry www.coconutharrys.com

** From Jesse at the Samara Surf School -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Well after nearly 2.5 months of some really warm lake water, we've had some waves visit in our Samara bay, maybe 3 foot, but fun!

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell is expected to rise, with today being the full moon and big tides for the next 3 days we should see some sizable waves. Always hoping for the lovely 5 to 6 foot samara waves.... Lets see what happens! no winds, nice glass.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Same as always, Las Brisas Del Pacifico hotel..

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:

** From Andrea at Waves CR Surf Camp in Playa Hermosa -

On regards to the awful Diamond beach towers... We have established an Asociacion: Camara de turismo de Playa Hermosa, have hired a lawyer and finally got the information under what name the denuncia has to go to.... As a fact the area where they are building is titled land but it´s still a wetland, and it´s protected by law, the studies are being done in order to prove it´s a wetland, but the developers say it´s not...also to the back of their property, there is an estuary as well...

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 2/3 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Our beautiful head high surf degenerated into on shore, inconsistent, sloppy fun as the tides moved into the late afternoon this week. Today (Sat.) was the first day of dawn patrol and starts us off on another cycle of positive surf forecasts and dual sessions.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The wind is ideal for the up coming week and the water is still warm. A bump in the swell would be ideal for both morning and evening high tides.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The smaller waves are all up and down the beach with the rare, larger waves coming in at the main peak just south of the hotel. A good session or two was reported from the rock at the north end of the beach.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waves here at Playa Negra are knee to waist high. Nice warm offshores in the mornings and a cool onshore breeze in the afternoons.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): A bump. That's what they are calling it. A bit of a increase from the NW should bring the surf to waist to shoulder high sets. Backs down by mid week with another bump for next weekend.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We have high tide running through the mornings this week and with almost no swell out there, longboards are the call at either Playa Negra or Playa Avellanas.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: If you would like to see what Playa Negra used to look like back when we had waves, check out www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

Take last week's report and just COPY it! Waist to chest - occasionally bigger around the in-coming tide. Lots of fun if you need to practice on that longboard. Pura Vida, Coconut Harry

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Boy oh Boy do I hate flat spells ¡ But its not flat here ¡ 3/5 ft faces and kind of fun at Tulin today , tide changes give you an hour either way of low tide and I even got a bit of a tube in the a.m. ! Jacos okay for the log but no shortie riders out there for sure ! Come surfing , the weathers fine and the waters warm ! Pura Vida, Chuck and the CREW !

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Finally, we got some head high waves today. Mid-tide seems to make the best wave.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Looks like we might even get bigger waves through Monday, but don't count on too much more. At best, I think the head high sets will come in more frequently.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Be aware that the fisherman are going nuts at the river mouth. Be careful surfing here at the lower tides (when the fishermen like to fish). We had 40 lines in the water this morning (yes, I counted them as I've never seen so many fishing here before) and although I've never known anyone to get tangled up in a fishing line, I'd hate to be the first.

** From Marco at Hotel Resort Totem in Playa Cocles -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: 5 - 7 pies, NE swell

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): sol y ola

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: salsa brava
