NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Surf is overhead Monday, but the bigger sets get fewer and
farther between. By Tuesday it's an overhead set every 20 minutes.
Wednesday has a small increase from the SSW, a foot overhead at the
best spots. Thursday stays the same with some 15 second long period
ground swell showing a 2 foot overhead peak. By Friday though it
starts to fade again, and going into the weekend it's only headhigh.
It stays headhigh with an occasional overhead set all through the
early week. The next swell arrives next Friday (10/7) from the SW
bringing surf up to 2-4 foot overhead all through that weekend.

Caribbean - No surf expected for the coast, which means great diving
and snorkeling and a chance to swim with the dolphins. How about 7
days and 6 nights at the Cashew Hill Lodge overlooking Puerto Viejo -

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 9/24)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
A tropical depression is holding over Costa Rica and our area is not
surfable.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): Even though the tides are moving
into the morning window and what we are experiencing here in Playa
Grande is not really that bad, we don't expect the on shore wind to
stop or the "chocolate milk" to clear by the week end.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
The second half of this past week was very stormy and rainy as a
tropical front passed through. It's not raining much anymore, but we
haven't seen the sun in a few days. For two days the ocean was the
color of chocolate milk, but today it looks almost like water. The
stormy wind has kicked up the ocean into a wash-machine-like froth.
I don't recommend surfing until the water cleans up a little.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): The storm system is passing and I
expect to see the sun today or tomorrow. The ocean will take a while
to settle and clean up again. It might be a good weekend to be lazy
and enjoy the rainy season!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Pura Mar
closed this week for remodeling to the shop. We don't have an
opening date yet, but I imagine it will be near the end of October.
See you then!
No vemos entonces!

** From Travis at Witch Rick Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: It was another weekend full of
chest to head high waves in Guanacaste. Off-shore winds have
continued to bless our beaches, though not as frequently as last
week. It was another epic day at Witch's and Ollie's on Friday and
the SW swell that arrived Tuesday night has
continued to pound the coast with overhead waves. The tides haves
shifted so that high tide is in the middle of the day making the low
tide breaks better for early morning & sunset sessions. The "green"
season has however, reared its rainy head once again creating some
afternoon glass-offs at the high tide spots.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) We are getting hit
pretty hard right now with more of the same on the horizon. Thursday
and Friday are featuring a new swell which should give way to an
even larger swell, due to arrive Wednesday morning.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - All the beaches in
Northern Costa Rica should have, at least, head high waves this
weekend. The direction of the swell(s) should allow for bigger waves
at all of the following breaks: Playa Grande – GRANDE Avellanas –
River Mouth in the morning, reef in the afternoon. Negra - likely to
be very big. Witch's Rock & Ollie's Point won't be for the faint of
heart with 10 feet of swell. Plan your boat trip according to your
confidence level, and your ability to replace your board!
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- WRSC has recently added a TV "AS BIG AS
YOUR ASS" behind the bar. You can now watch our homemade surf videos
and special features while eating a ridiculous amount of nachos and
sipping on your favorite libation. We are also featuring the musical
stylings of Navil Rodriguez on Friday nights. WRSC is the best place
in town to cap off a great day of surfing or to start your night off
right. We'll see you here! Pura Vida y Buenas Olas! Travis Call -
Positive Vibe Technician - Witch's Rock Surf Camp

** From John Lyman Photos at Pablo's Picasso with the Playa Negra
surf report:
The waves have been sizable all week. Well overhead. Unfortunately
it has been victory at sea with heavy onshores and a lot of rain.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): Friday has been the same as all
week. Totally blown out. It's going to take a week for this ocean to
calm down enough to surf.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The best place for surf this
weekend will at The Oasis Restaurant where they will be showing
great surfing DVDs.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: If the wind
ever stops howling onshore Lyman will be out shooting. If you make
your way to Playa Negra, get shot by Lyman Photos. Check it out!

** From Samara Surf School on the Nicoya Peninsula -
The swell has backed down, but there are still some bigger waves
rolling in, 4 feet waves, good form. Off shore winds, before the
rain storms, but mostly choppy conditions. 5 to 6 foot close outs on
the outside.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): A swell is expected to be coming
in, bringing 4 to 6 foot waves, nice form. For the weekend we have 4
foot waves, soft peaks, great for intermediate surfers. Good time to
practice up on your skills. Perfect conditions for beginners for
whitewater. Choppy conditions with rain.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The best surfing spot in
Samara is right in front of the Las Brisas Del Pacifico hotel. No
crowds or localism, with a nice clean perfect wave. LONG RIDES THIS
WEEK!
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: The conditions
in Samara are perfect for beginners right now, so if you've always
wanted to learn surfing come on down or over! If you love
longboarding and want calm conditions it's perfect now! - Pura Vida

look small, head high to overhead at best.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 9/18)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
The week started off with perfect overhead surf for several days.
Even though the offshore wind has held all week to everyones
surprise, the swell has been too large and tricky to surf
comfortably for the last few days.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
High tide is now
moving into the afternoon and the wind will become a major factor.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: We have been slipping down
into the bay toward Tamarindo and sending our guests to Avellanas
river mouth for low tide barrels in the early morning.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
It's pretty crazy out there today! A big south swell is peaking out
and unfortunately closing out at a lot of places too. Pico Pequeno
was breaking right this morning half way to Zullymar. Wave height is
between chest to a foot overhead and the wind is off shore.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell is supposed to be
peaking out today, but the waves should linger around through the
weekend. If the wind keeps up this pattern, you'll be able to surf
in Tamarindo all day long and that's unusual!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Pico Pequeno is great right
now, the rivermouth works at mid tides and Langosta has got to be
gigantic.

The surf has been big and mixed up. Onshore winds most of the day
with victory at sea conditions.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): The surf will be coming down a
bit and if the wind cooperates it could be really good.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: John Lyman

** From Samara Surf School on the Nicoya Peninsula -
The swell is back! Big 5 to 6 foot waves, good form.7 foot close
outs rolling in on the outside. Nice sunset sesh for beginners,
perfect whitewater to practice on. Choppy and windy with the rain.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell expected to hold over
the weekend, but will back down to the normal 4 to 5 foot waves
during high tides, and nice whitewater during low tides. Lots of
double waves rolling in, pretty choppy but glassy after the
rainstorms.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -
The waves are big but not as big as we were expecting. They are
about double overhead on average but closing out and sloppy. I
haven't been down to the point but imagine that is where all the
surfers are (or at Pavones).
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): I imagine that every day this
swell goes by the waves will get better. They need to be a bit
smaller for the beach to work and I think that will happen Saturday.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

but have been to busy to get down there.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The anticipated South swell kicks in Monday afternoon,
with some 1-3 foot overhead sets coming in with a 15 second period.
The period shortens to 12 seconds Tuesday, but the size increases
another 2-4 foot, a mackin south swell in effect. Sticks around with
double overhead + sets Wednesday, and then fills in the Guanacaste
coast with double overhead surf Thursday, with a SW mix. Friday will
see a slight drop down to 1-3 foot overhead, and not until Saturday
will the 2 foot overhead sets become less frequent. Stays a foot
overhead through the weekend and well into next week.

Caribbean - Disturbances in the Caribbean Sea push in a ENE swell
with chest high surf on Monday. Fades fast down to waist to chest on
Tuesday and by Wednesday, only waist surf is available. Gets even
smaller with cleaner conditions on Thursday, with little hope until
late Sunday afternoon when a small ESE swell fills in the beaches
with chest high waves.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 9/9)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
We are enjoying glassy and off shore mornings in the head high
range.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas):With the high tides in the morning
and the weather conditions bringing off shores we should have some
pretty good surf for this time of the year if the swell holds.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: It is quite a bit bigger at
the main peak in front of the hotel.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
The surf has been between waist and chest high most of the week,
although it looks a little smaller today. The wind has been
switching on and off shore and there have actually been several days
in a row without rain.
llueve.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): There's supposed to be a south
swell arriving either during the weekend or early next week. I don't
imagine that the dry weather pattern will last much longer as it is
September. For the weekend, sunset sessions will be in order.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: It might be a nice weekend to
take an afternoon trip and check out Avellanas or Playa Grande as
Tamarindo is pretty small. Early mornings will be ok too but you'll
have to get there really early!!

** From Travis at Witch Rick Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS -Last weekend was ideal in
Guanacaste. Chest to head-high waves were the norm at most beaches
in the region. We have continued to enjoy periods of unseasonable,
mid-day, offshore winds. Tuesday was absolutely epic with friendly
conditions in the early morning, turning to a solid offshore mid-
morning until mid afternoon. The sunset glassoff that occurred
Tuesday night will be remembered, by a lot of
surfers, for a long time. Reports from Avellanas, Witch's Rock,
Ollie's Point, Playa Grande and Nosara for that day were delivered
through Cheshire grins. The swell that we are currently enjoying has
consistently produced 4-6 foot waves for the last 5 days or so, and
with the beautiful offshores we been blessed with, most people
around here are pretty stoked.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves)- This swell is set
to wane ever so slightly then gradually gain strength through the
weekend. Waist to chest high waves should continue through Monday
evening. Tuesday and Wednesday of next week represent the peak of
the new swell and should deliver waves well overhead all over the
Northwest coast of Costa Rica. If the wind Gods continue to smile on
us, the next week should be one for the books.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - All the beaches in
Northern Costa Rica should have waist to head high waves this
weekend; with the more south-facing breaks getting hit the hardest.
Look for Playa Grande to be especially Grande while Avellanas and
Negra should also boast some impressive sets. Witch's Rock & Ollie's
Point, depending on time of day and wind direction, have the
potential to continue to deliver memorable sessions.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Witch's Rock Surf Camp has recently added
a TV "AS BIG AS YOUR ASS" behind the bar. You can now watch our
homemade surf videos and special features while eating a ridiculous
amount of nachos and sipping on your favorite libation. We are also
featuring live music on Thursday nights. WRSC is the best place in
town to start your night off right or cap off a great day of
surfing. We'll see you here! Pura Vida y Buenas Olas! Travis Call-
Positive Vibe Technician- Witch's Rock Surf Camp

** From John Lyman Photos at Pablo's Picasso with the Playa Negra
surf report:
The waves have been fun to really fun at headhigh to a few feet
overhead on the outside sets. A few big ole closeouts just to keep
things real.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect Playa Negra to be on fire
this weekend. It's a locals only weekend though.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The best place for Playa
Negra locals is Playa Negra. I hear Sapo's at Playa Langosta in
Tamarindo has been really good too and not that crowded. Check it
out.

** From Harry at Coconut Harry's in Playa Guiones (Nosara) -
Head-high - maybe a little bigger on set waves - pretty fun surf
here - not much wind on-shore, so we can surf anytime all day. Rainy
periods bring glassy sessions.

** From Samara Surf School on the Nicoya Peninsula -
The swell has backed down, but there are some 4 to 5 foot waves that
are PERFECT FORM... Long rides, glassy conditions, off shore winds.
Awesome! Nice sunset sesh's, choppy and windy with the rain.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): A small swell is expected to be
coming in. For the weekend we have 4 foot waves, soft peaks, great
for intermediate surfers.
Pura Vida

** From Rancho Coral in Playa Esterillos -
Local Climate: Sunny, Air Temp: 91F. Water Temp 87F, Direction &
Height: South 4 ft., Sea Surface: Glass, Wind: South 0-3 MPH,
Sunrise: 5:31 AM
Sunset: 6:12 PM, Current Condition- We have a south going pretty
good off the West End for High Tide. East Peak is breaking better on
the Lower Tide, We have Homey and His Crew Making another film here
which should be another TRYP. Check out Aaron Cormican's Rancho
Rodeo Flip in Surfing Magazine "Seven Days with Aaron Cormican" You

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -
Sorry to have been off line for the last few issues, but sometimes
we actually have to work down here in paradise. The waves have been
(and still are) great at the beach in Dominical. About head high
with a few overheads mixed in. Best at mid-tide as full tide is too
mushy...but full tide if you are a long boarder. For the last week
the waves were coming in solidly from the south making for some
great lefts but it was a bit mixed up today giving good rights and
lefts off of peaky A-frames.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the A-frames I think.
Smaller til Sunday and then it looks like we might have a GREAT
southern swell coming. Too early to tell when it will arrive, but it
looks unstoppable at the moment.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The beach at Dominical or
Hermosa. I think the coming swell may make "the point" work. We'll
see.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Surf is on for Monday, a foot overhead with 2 foot
overhead sets. Gets more south and more consistent Tuesday, smaller
only where the beach does not face south. Barranca or Pavones would
be the call. Wednesday it starts to die down, and by Thursday it is
back to headhigh and fun surf. Friday stays small, and it's chest to
overhead through the weekend. The next south swell arrives next
Monday and sticks around with 1-2 overhead surf for the following
four days. Long term outlook is good.

Caribbean - Tiny conditions on Monday are rleieved by waist high
surf arriving late afternoon Tuesday. The swell increases to chest
high + on Wednesday, but fades a foot a day later. Friday it's back
to tiny with some tropical wave relief not expected until the end of
next weekend.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 9/2)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

The surf has been relatively lousy the last couple of days with the
on shore winds blowing out a small swell in the afternoon when the
tides are right.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
in the afternoon to glass it off and don't surf if there is
lightning.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The bigger waves (shoulder to
head high) are focusing in just south of the hotel.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
The following is a copy of an e-mail I wrote this afternoon to
someone asking about when to surf where in Costa Rica. He had a
great experience with good waves in Malpais one year and a
disappointing experience with waves in Tamarindo the following year.
He wanted some input for planning another trip. As this is a speak I
give with great frequency, I've posted it here for all to see…
"Great to hear from you! First of all–I'm glad you like the website.
Second, I'm not surprised that you didn't see my shop in Jan 2004,
because I bought it in March 2004 and at the time you were here, it
was called Costa Rica Best Tours and I was working independently,
renting boards from other shops.
…Your story of good and bad surf trips is classic–welcome to the
wonderful world of Mother Nature! Here is what I can tell you and
what I can't. I can tell you that Malpais is ALWAYS bigger than
Tamarindo. Look at a map and you will see why. Malpais is open to
the ocean and Tamarindo is in the back of a shallow bay that faces a
bit north. Tamarindo does get big waves (6-10 ft) but they only last
a day or two at a time, generally. When Malpais is fun (6-8 ft),
Tamarindo is 3-4 ft. When Tamarindo is 6-8 ft, Malpais is 10-12. You
see? "The swell hits there" (surf-lingo) much better than it does
here.
I can tell you that "good surf" has more to do with the shape of the
waves than with the size. "Good surf" is created by off-shore winds
and on-shore winds will create crappy surf no matter what the size.
And the wind is actually much easier to predict than the wave size.
Wind is generally off-shore in the morning, to try to travel when
you'll have a morning high tide (tide charts at crsurf.com). In
Tamarindo-area, February and March ususally have TOO MUCH off-shore
wind which actually flattens the surf and doesn't let waves shape up
at all, so don't come then. Malpais doesn't have that phenomenon, so
go there any time. …Other than that, the wind pretty much does what
it wants.
The size of the surf is created by storms in the ocean. When it's
winter in North America, our swells come from the north. When it's
winter in South America, our swells come from the south. The worse
of a winter everybody else has, the better waves we get and as you
know, winters vary a lot and who can predict them??? That's why I
can't tell you when and where to go to get certain sizes of waves.
I suggest you avoid October (lots of rain), April (miserably hot)
and Feb/March (only if you are coming to Tamarindo). Other than
that, come when it suits you best and know that Mother Nature does
what ever She wants whenever She wants.
Hope this is helpful even if not all that specific…come say Hi when
you visit! "

** From John Lyman Photos at Pablo's Picasso with the Playa Negra
surf report:

The surf has been fun with head high and a few overhead sets.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect more of the same. With the
high tide in the afternoons check out those afternoon early evening
glass offs.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

hotel has been working. The lefts have been unusually good and
unusually uncrowded.

** From Harry at Coconut Harry's in Playa Guiones (Nosara) -

Well, the surf is not showing what we expected, BUT it's still fun &
NOT crowded - maybe chest-to-head high on bigger set waves - this
report is for Friday (Sept. 2) - perhaps better tomorrow? Hasta
bananas, Coconut Harry

** From Samara Surf School on the Nicoya Peninsula -

The swell has backed down, but the 3 foot waves that are here are
PERFECT FORM... Long rides, glassy conditions, off shore winds.
Awesome
Longboarding. Nice sunset sesh's, choppy and windy with the rain.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar

in, bringing 4 to 6 foot waves, nice form. For the weekend we have 3
foot waves, soft peaks, great for intermediate surfers. Good time to

** From Chuck at Wow Surf Shop in Jaco -

Juan Carlos Naranjo just got a new board delivered by Craig Cronin
one of the shapers of ERIE surfboards www.eriesurfboards.com and
he's just killing it ! Watch out for more of these guys boards and
riders in the water , its all good ! Oh speaking of good [or not]
our town just got inundated by a container of CHINA made cheap
surfboards and are even being peddled by one of our amatuer surf
directors ? Imagine that , hey if we don't sell more of the REAL
SURFERS boards then who is going to sponsor the young hot rippers ?
Will MIKE DOLSEY surf designs be an official sponsor of the Natl
Circuit or would he or his distributors ever ride one ? ? Would
anybody even ride em [maybe one]? Come on man , surf lessons on BZs
is one thing and dont ask Mike Hubbard [ BODYBOARD CHAMP] about BZs
sponsorship you would be shocked about how much they put back in to
surf and related sports[look at the rescue sleds for TOW-IN] . Lets
keep our boards surfer built and surfer sanded and surfer ridden or
maybe we better buy stock in WALMART ! LOOK OUT CARTON and BANZAII
and FISCHER BRO'S here comes the CHINA JUNK ! Anyways I dont care
who you buy your boards from but make sure they are "surfer built"
and "SOULFILLED" and let the Chinese guys make cheap bicycles and
toys and ladies underwear , no real surfer would ride one of these
anyways ! Thanks and keep the soulfire burning , Chuck and the Crew
at W.O.W. surf !
