NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - It's a dream week as the surf slowly builds Monday from head high to 1 foot overhead by dark with a 12 second period. Then on Tuesday a SSW arrives with 2 foot overhead sets and a 14-15 second period. Swell maxes on Wednesday, but the sets stick around Thursday, too. On Friday it drops noticeable down to overhead conditions and by Saturday it's back to head high, with a couple of bigger sets. No major swell expected for the next week after, so get on it now!

Caribbean - A short period ENE swell brings chest high surf for Monday but fades Tuesday down to waist high with a few bigger sets. Wednesday it stays small at waist high, and the conditions stay the same through to the weekend with no tropical systems expected to form.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: In spite of the constant overhead swell and brilliant weather, the surf has been tticky at best - mostly because of the afternoon high tide and lack of consistent off shores.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Friday the off shores almost held and Sat. looks even better. Don't worry about swell. The wave size is perfect for an off shore day.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We've been ducking down into the bay toward Tamarindo for smoother conditions.

** From Ed at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

Well we surfed at Avellanas this morning/afternoon and it went so so, water was dark and some on shore wind, but still there were some long shoulders. I heard the right here in front of our camp the waves were closing out, that is typical for this time of the year. Some of our students went to Roca Bruja and Ollie's point and they say that Roca Bruja was not so good, but Ollie's was perfect, good for them...Pura Vida, Ed

** From Jesse at the Samara Surf School -

AREA REPORTS

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: There's a little lull in the swell this weekend but sets are still shoulder high at the high tide. Yesterday the wind blew off shore all day making it surfing possible from dawn till dusk! Today it's on shore and cloudy so we expect some rain by afternoon. The water is warm and clear.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): There will be waves all weekend, especially in the mornings. Even with the wind on shore there's enough swell that it holds up.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The Tamarindo beach break is working nicely and the rivermouth is rolling some nice rights when the tide isn't too high. For bigger surf, hit Langosta.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: It's been messy and oversize for most of the week until Friday when the off shores blew almost all day. It calmed down and smoothed out nicely at just overhead with some bombing sets. You still had to pick 'em and their was a slight lump here and there.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell is remaining consistent. Since we are right on the edge of the off shores, it's hard to predict and up to the wind. The tides are perfect for morning surf and good conditions. Expect the Independence holiday crowd.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: This is a good size for the peaks around the hotel.

** From Ed at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

How is life over there???? Well let me tell you what....here is life perfect, the paradise is helping a lot to make our life easy. This paradise and the swell for this week are working together for give us the week of the month. Perfect conditions, some clean 5/6 ft, long shoulders, off shore wind. Avellanas was perfect last two, Grande was holding the waves, nice barrels over there... really good. No rain the last three days...is just amaizing. Pura Vida, Ed

** From Rancho Coral in Playa Esterillos -

Local Climate: Nice, Air Temp: 94F. Water Temp 87F, Direction & Height: South Southwest 4 to6ft., Sea Surface: Clean, Winds: South 3 MPH, Sunrise: 5:53 AM, Sunset: 6:16 PM, Current Conditions- The crowds have left for summer and has rewarded its workers with over a week of solid surf and empty line ups. We have had an awesome season here at The Ranch and wishing you have it as good as we do. See you in Huntington in October 14 through the 22nd for The Lost Energy Games, Pura Vida!

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Yesterday was head high and shrinking. This morning was shoulder high at best. But don't be discouraged, good stuff is coming our way soon.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): By Sunday we should have fully double overhead sets coming in at the beach. The swell direction is almost due south and should make spectacular lefts.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Almost everywhere should be working well starting Sunday afternoon. The point should be going off as should be all the beaches from Ojochal to Puntarenas. I would guess the very best in the Dominical area will be the point but that is only if the beach is too big. With this swell direction, I'm pretty sure the beach will work. If surfing the beach, put in south of the cell tower. The current will be pushing north toward the river.

** From Marco at Hotel Totem in Playa Cocles -

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): sol y olas

Concerns Grow As Coast Crime Turns Violent - By Ralph Nicholson of The Beach Times

They'll Surf Against Tuna
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

** Those who opposed an undersea tuna farm in the Golfo Dulce plan a surf championship Saturday near the community of Pavones in southwest Costa Rica.

The environmental groups sponsoring the event oppose the project proposed by Granja Atunera de Golfito S.A. and have appealed permits to the Sala IV constitutional court.

The opponents object to the mess that would be created by raising yellowfin tuna in two-kilometer-long cages beneath the pristine gulf. **

** From Nathon at Nathon's Place in Jaco -

Area wave heights and conditions are 5-7 1/2 Ft. a bit rough, murky water with debris in the water with mainly closeouts from most of the beach with rights and lefts forming mainly in the rip current in Jaco'. Hermosa beach 5-10 Ft. waves, less murky but still dark from the sand, Very rough water, choppy also. I went out there the other day and spent like 10 - 15 min trying to get past the brake. It was pushing so hard that three full sets came through before I made it past the break again. There are some trees that washed up on shore so that only means there's still some debris out in the water. Along with both spots you will occasionally run into some jellyfish but it aint bad. Herradura Bay a la punta it's 5-9 Ft. waves all lefts with some close outs as usual and pretty non-murky waves.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Surf is chest to head high Sunday, up to consistent head high on Monday, and a few sets a foot overhead on Tuesday in the southern zone. By the afternoon the SSW swell fills in the Nicoya peninsula with the same head high surf. On Wednesday the bulk of the waves arrive, overhead with a 2 foot overhead set every half hour, and the size stays the same through Friday. Saturday a few bigger pulses show from nearby tropical formations. Sunday the waves drop two feet to head high, but another SW arrives next Wednesday with big surf and long period swell.

Caribbean - Monday will have waves chest high with only the best spots showing a head high peak on the sets. Tuesday through Thursday has surf waist high with chest high sets once an hour. Friday the sets disappear, and by Saturday a waist high wave will have to do since nothing else is showing.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 9/2 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Unusually good for this time of the year, the evening and early morning glass offs are permitting some pretty good surf in the shoulder to head high range.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Should hold through the week end, but start to get sketchy into the week as the tides move into mid day.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are working peaks all along the north end of the bay.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Tamarindo surf this weekend is waist high. Winds are off shore early in the morning, but turning around by 9 or 10. The water is very warm and still clean and clear.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): We've been having some rainy afternoons, but that doesn't affect the surf because high tides are in the morning this weekend. Expect small surf all morning.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Pico Pequeno has a nice small wave at high tide and the rivermouth has a little right.

** From Ed at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

Surfers.. This is Ed again telling you about our surfing for today... It's seem like everybody went out last night because Tamarindo was empty this morning, but that's ok waves were not that good today. On shore winds all morning. And the swell is not helping, for are waiting for this week, a swell is coming from the south, it seems to bring nice waves, let's see what happen. - Pura vida

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones:

Hola from Playa Guiones (Nosara), Well, what can I say - it's pretty weak here with waist and occasional bigger set waves - reminds me of a "good" day at Virginia Beach :) So, best times are around high tides which is in the mornings for the next several days - winds will be calm or light and there's enough water to "peak" the wave. Pura vida - Coconut Harry at www.coconutharrys.com

** From Jesse at the Samara Surf School -

New and upcoming events: Samara is starting a recycle program now, benefitting the beach and the local school children. Also: Festival de Sabores - Samara 2006 February 17 from 12-8pm An international flavor festival, food and wine tastings from all of the different cultures living in the community.
