The Pacific is quiet for Christmas week. No northern action is going to show, and the SSW swell has weakened, pushing head high surf in as a Christmas gift, but disappearing the day after leaving small leftovers. Head south of Jaco to south facing beachbreaks for the bigger surf on the incoming tides..

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - (12/22)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Just overhead, off shore, and beautiful on Sat.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Off shores should hold through the weekend.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are good peaks everwhere.

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (12/20) -

Where is this big swell everyone's been anticipating? I got all psyched up, waxed my board, set my alarm and woke up before the dawn, hoping to score some uncrowded waves on the perfect sandbar that has formed in front of the camp. But, much to my dismay, I was greeted with shoulder high waves (on the sets), when I was expecting consistent overhead barrels. Not that shoulder high waves aren't fun. Hell, I have some really good days of surfing in shoulder high waves, but its the expectation of late entry drops, tubing perfection, washing machine wipeouts, spaghetti arms and nasal drains that made me feel a bit jaded, when I realized that it wasn't going to happen. It took a few minutes of adjusting to this reality (one that is always present for the surfer) before I would allow myself to enjoy the gift that the ocean brought to my door this morning. But, damn it! Why did it have to blow out so soon?

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (12/22)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves at Playa Negra have been in the fun headhigh to a bit overhead on the sets the last few days. Partly cloudy skies with offshore wind in the mornings and sea breezes in the afternoons. The water temp is 82 degrees.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Smaller surf is on tap for the next few days as this SW swell slowly backs down. Still fun waves in the chest high range with those nice offshores. A new SW starts to show the first part of this week with more headhigh stuff with fair to good shape.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We have full moon low tides in the mornings now so check out Playa Avellanas rivermouth early and Playa Negra midday.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: The Playa Negra Wall Of Fame slide show DVD coming soon. Check it out at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com .

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (12/23)

Small, Glassy Surf, Longboarder's Heaven! It is a beautiful Sunday in Guiones Beach this morning. Surf is in the waist high range, but it has some perfect form. It would be one of those video days for the classic longboard/fish video! Looks like we will have these conditions for the next two or three days and then we get another big one, 5.5 ft at 16-18 seconds... it is pretty S though, so it shouldn't be quite that big here. So, enjoy the chillness that we have now, and take the wife and kids to the beach...We went to the fiestas in Esperanza last night!!! What a blast! Good food, and a bunch of laughs... there is always one guy that is really feeling his machismo and makes my night... last night there were two. If anyone went, i am talking about noventa dos and the Nosara mullet man... classic!

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco (12/22) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: HO HO HO ! Merry Christmas ! Looking good here plenty of surf , 3-5 ft clean and bit shut down but not bad .Lots of people and we have more police , more tourists and less crime per recent stats here in town ! Got the new WEBBER SLX boards in and they are too rad ! Everybody is getting ready to visit so lets protect them and warn them so there vacation can be truly PURA VIDA ! It only takes a moment to mention and warn them and they appreciate it when we are straight and informative ! Just a word of caution is all it takes ! Watch out for crazy drivers because yes they abound right now , partiers should be more careful as the cops are getting tougher on drunkdrivers ! Don't drink and drive ! Have fun get great waves and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS ! Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF !

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - (12/15)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Wed., Thurs., and Friday morning have all yielded excellent surf sessions with well over head sets and perfect off shore form.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The sets are becoming less consistent as the strong tides back off making for better bottom conditions and morning off shores.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are peaks everywhere.

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (12/12) -

Shoulder to head high waves could be found this morning at several beaches around the area, with Marbella being one of the stand out locations, producing some clean little barrels and fun rides for everyone on the tour.

That west swell that pounded the California coastline last week, brought us overhead waves all weekend, but has died a bit over the past couple of days. However, it is still giving us fun surf up and down the coast with offshore wind conditions everywhere.

Not only that, we are expecting more swell into next week. So if you are coming down, get ready to surf all day long.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (12/15)

The surf at Playa Negra has been fun headhigh to a few feet over on the sets. Good shape with sunny skies and 80 degree water. Offshore wind half the day and onshore sea breezes in the afternoons. Perfect beach and surfing weather. It's going to get better too. Waves stay in the chest to headhigh range for the next few days as high tide runs through the mornings. The SW swell should give Playa Negra good shape helped out by the offshore wind. Look for a bigger shot of SW swell for Playa Negra and Playa Avellanas on Wednesday and Thursday of this upcoming week.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: The new John Lyman Photos t-shirts are here. Check them out at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com
** From Steve at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones (12/16) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The wase are 2-3 ft with some chest head high sets rolling in.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell look like it will remain small but there is always some fun surf. Grab a long board or fish and get it before the wind picks up.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Guiones will have the best waves in the area.

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (12/16)

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical (12/15) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Chest high sets with nothing in between. The high tide is nearly impossible, but the mid-tide waves have really nice form and are fun.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): More of the same but a better tide arrangement through Tuesday. It looks like they should swell up over-head on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach.

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - (12/8)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been well overhead, off shore, and good for most of the week. Today it was a little weaker and a little too high at high tide to match yesterday.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: This swell is focusing in on the north end of the bay with good peaks as far as you can see in both directions.

** From Blue Trailz Surf Adventures in Tamarindo:

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: WAVES

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (12/8)

The surf has been increasing over the last couple days. Heading into the weekend, the waves are headhigh to a couple feet overhead on the sets. Perfect beach weather with warm sunny skies and offshore wind all day. Water temp is back up to the low 80s. This latest SW swell peaks this weekend. Look for the swell to dissipate moving into the upcoming week. A bit of NW will show by Monday along with a small SW for some fun chest to head high stuff for the beginning of the week.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: The new John Lyman Photos t-shirts are here. Check them out at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (12/9)

What???? What???? All the forecasts are straight blowing it this week... Nobody is even calling for anything here, and it is 2 feet overhead on sets! The problem is that surfline and magic don't understand that we pick up a NW... Not many places in CentAM do, but we do... and it is firing. It may be our best direction, with strong bowls to the beach, lots of power. I went over on a duckdive last night, then two waves later had my leash snapped, so I had to surf it leashless for the last 45 minutes... That will make you step your surfing up a bit. Pio broke his leash this morning.

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais (12/8)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Swell hit for the 2nd time this week. Overhead, fair to good conditions.

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco (12/8) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: WOW we have surf ! 6-8 ft faces with bigger sets , plenty of power being utilized out there by the guys and gals ! Good turn out with lots of spectators and lost of new sponsorship involved and looks like the new Director Jose Urena means business about making the CNSC a better organization ! GO GO GO ! Anyways the shop was well represented in the contest as well with all the riders passing on to semi-finals for tomorrow ! New boards are here and the new WEBBER SLX are insane, new epoxy fabrication that's so sweet you gotta see it and new boards for @ 600$ ! Come on by and see em and check out the video too! Be happy and BUENAS OLAS , Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF! http://www.surfindustries.com/products/webber.html Thanks !

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical (12/8) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Nice waves with overhead sets have been around for a week or so.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): We are expecting a slide for a few days into head-high as a max. But then we should be getting a nice swell. Looks like it'll be coming right at the beach so it'll probably only work at the point.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The point has been working occasionally at mid-tide but I think tomorrow (Sunday) and for the next bunch of days, the waves will be too small.

Then on Saturday the first 2 foot overhead sets arrive from the WNW (West North West powerhouse from the Aleutians) and they continue through Monday morning.

Caribbean - Surf is chest to head high with some pretty consistent overhead sets. Gets a foot bigger by Monday midday, but then the sets get less frequent by dusk. Tuesday has some traces of headhigh sets, with mostly chest high waves. The swell is a remnant by Wednesday, with knee to waist high surf for the next four days afterward. ** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (12/1)-

Fun waves this morning. I was out by first light and surfed all by myself in chest to shoulder high lefts and rights that were peeling off the sandbar that has formed directly in front of the hotel. I had so much fun and caught tons of waves on my 6'0" fish, which works like magic on these waves.

Hopefully, I won't see you out in the water tomorrow morning, at least until I've caught my share of good waves :)

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (12/1)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The small surf continues with waist to chest high and a head high set every now and then. Sunny skies and offshore wind makes for perfect beach weather. Water temp is a chilly 72 degrees.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The surf will be picking up out of the SW with a bit of NW to help break it up a bit and make for some good surfing conditions. The dry season is in full bloom now with offshore wind all day and clear sunny skies.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Negra will be the hot spot all this upcoming week as the surf will be getting bigger with over head sets by Tuesday and Wednesday.

Looking ahead, we are going to have a good week!!!! Lots of stars from magic, and surfline is talking about the Southern hemi "unleashing" some good energy!

Pacific - Continued small surf for the entire coastline, waist to occasional chest high waves. Dominical beachbreak will be best at midtide pushing in, along with other standout beach breaks. A slight increase in size will come Wednesday, but the chest to head high surf only lasts a day. Then it's back to waist to chest until next Wednesday (12/5), when a SSW brings some head high relief.

Caribbean - Chest to head high waves Sunday increase to overhead by Monday morning. Then it grows another 2 feet to max out Tuesday with set 2-3 foot overhead. Wednesday has fewer big sets, but consistent overhead conditions. Thursday the swell drops down to headhigh with some overhead sets and by Friday it's back to chest to head high. There's another ENE swell to follow that won't arrive until next Monday morning.

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - (11/24)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We have great conditions for the small (2 - 3 foot) waves.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same. The tides are moving into the mid afternoon so the presence off shores becomes a factor.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are small peaks all up and down the north end of the bay, and an especially good vibe in the water with the small crowd.

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (11/21)-

The surf has been small, but there are the occasional set waves still coming through that make it worth paddling out. The Papagayo winds (offshores) have kicked in for the season, so conditions should continue to be good. All we need now is some swell.

Luis was on fire today surfing at Playa Grande. He makes the waves look even better than they are. I'm not sure why he is wearing a wetsuit, other than the fact that he is so damn skinny and the offshore winds can chill you down. He is heading down to Jaco tonight for a surf contest. The way he has been surfing, he should do well. But then again, with the lack of swell in the water, it could be anybodys contest.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (11/24)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: No storms, no rain and no waves. Beautiful sunny skies with offshores in the mornings and those cool sea breezes in the afternoons. Water temp is a chilly 76 degrees.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Mismo!

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The skate park in Tamarindo . Grass surfing at the Monkey Park in Portegolpe or the football on TV.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: You can see what it used to look like when Playa Negra used to have waves. www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (11/25)

Buenos amigos... things are good here in Guiones, as this morning is looking pretty fun.. it is waist high with some larger peaks, but lined up pretty nicely and not looking too weak. There is yoga training going on this morning on the beach, which means that you can only whisper as you are walking out to the lineup, and no hooting... wouldn't want to throw off anyones ohmmmms now. :) Actually, if you are an older male, who is married, I wouldn't walk the beach this morning with your wife.. it is a fight waiting to happen.

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais (11/24)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Chest high, steady sets, glassy conditions, some offshore winds.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): May pump up to head high on Saturday.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Anywhere from Playa Carmen to Suck Rock.

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waist to shoulder high waves and over-crowding have been plaguing us since I returned from Indonesia . It must be natures revenge on me for having had so much fun and good waves in Indo. However small, these little waves are giving some fun rides at the lower tides.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Doesn't look like there is anything more on the horizon for another week at least. However, with the sunny days and no-wind conditions, the small surf is not without merit.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The beach at Dominical is about the only place it'll be big enough for a ride.

** From Marco at Hotel Resort Totem in Playa Cocles -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: 4-6 pies

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): sol y olas

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: beach break, playa grande

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Small surf continues all week, chest high with a rare head high set - a foot smaller north of Nosara. Some southwest juice gives the southern end of the country a few head high waves on Wednesday, but it doesn't last past Thursday morning. The next South swell isn't looking too powerful, bringing some head high waves by next Tuesday.

Caribbean - East north east swell has hit the coast with chest to head high surf. A few overhead sets appear late Sunday and all day Monday, but by Tuesday the swell loses steam and backs off to chest high waves. Wednesday will have surf waist to chest high, Thursday down to waist high, and Friday, back to knee to waist. Another strong NE swell has the potential to fill in the surf by next Sunday evening.

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - (11/17)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The off shores are fanning the shoulder high, perfect, surf all day long.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Morning and evening sessions are still possible until Sunday. Beat the crowd by surfing early in the morning.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: It's more consistent at the main peak, but there are respectable little waves here and there up and down the beach.

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (11/15)-

Today we still had some small surf in town (waist high), but some fun waves were had at the more exposed spots. The report from the road trip to Marbella today was chest to shoulder high with some fun waves in glassy conditions all day. It looks like we are expected to get a bit more swell this weekend, nothing big, just a bit more than we've had all week. Keith Novosel is back with us this month to take some great photos of our guests. Make sure to get him to get some shots of you surfing. He is an amazing photographer with a great eye for surf action.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (11/17)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been very small at 1 to 2 foot. Offshore wind most of the day and warm sunny skies. Water temp is 76 degrees.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More small surf. Not much out there for the next week. There does seem to be a lot of jellyfish in the water right now.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: It's terrific beach weather right now. Take the family and the longboards and spend a day at the beach.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Check out the scenery at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (11/18)

Good Morning folks... I am getting an early one today, shots at 5:30 this morning, no one out... but swell starting to show. I surfed last night, and every ten minutes or so there would be a little set pushing through in the rib high range, and it looks to be that big today with bigger sets. This swell won't be very strong, as it has been downgraded by both Magic and Surfline, but both still have it improving over the last few days. The peak will be this afternoon, and we will have a nice low tide for it!

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Wake up Tuesday to clean chest to head high surf, lots of fun waves for a fish or longboard. Best peaks get an overhead set each hour. Expect the same through Friday, and then a couple of sets a foot overhead Saturday - but only for incoming tide. Then it's back to small, chest high with rare bigger sets all the way through next Friday. On the 25th, you'll finally see some overhead South swell.

Caribbean - Tuesday morning shows waist high surf with an occasional chest high set. By dusk, the waves get more consistent, with a few bigger sets on the reefs. Wednesday wakes up to fun surf, but the swell fades after midday and leave only a few more chest high sets every half hour. Thursday is back to waist high, and it stays like that through Saturday with some wide scattered bigger sets all weekend.

Well, our run of weather continues!!! It is a week now of perfect sunny skies and offshores, if only we still had a macking swell... but you'll never hear me complain... Surf this morning in Guiones is in the waist high range, there may still be lingering bigger sets, as every half-hour yesterday a real nice wave would roll through, and catch everyone inside... It is going to be another "Sprout" session on the retro twinz this morning... and a nice relaxing sunday... You guys have fun, play with your kids and catch a few where ever you are..

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - (11/3)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We are still waiting for the fabled Papagayo off shores and have been surfing generally sloppy conditions this week, even with morning high tides.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): It should be rideable, but a little mixed up.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: As you tuck into the bay toward Tamarindo the surf is smoother, but smaller.

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (11/3)-

It's another beautiful day today. The surf is small but looks great for longboarding. Now that it hasn't rained for a few days, the water is starting to clean up. Check out our new webcam to see how the surf looks for yourself.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (11/1)

TS Noel is dumping lots of rain on Playa Negra. Once the storm moves farther north, we should be back to sunny and warm in the mornings and cloudy with rain in the afternoons. It won't be long now before this very wet rainy season is history. The surf has been in the headhigh range with fair shape. Water temp is 79 degrees. Look for a SW bump in the swell with headhigh to a couple feet overhead for the second half of this week. The wind should stay calm in the mornings and turn onshore by mid day. Looking into next week, we should see a large SW swell move into Playa Negra by Tuesday with easily double over head waves with good shape.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: New bikini girls at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (11/4)

Good Morning! I surfed before doing the report today, as I wanted to catch the lower tide early this morning. It paid off, and was the best session that I have had since getting back. I surfed for about 2 hours and had 25-30 waves... with 7 or 8 going to the beach, some 5 turns waves in there. It had good power, and it was evident that there is a new swell in the water. The water is still a bit cold... never reported that before here, but I am betting about 74 degrees. Surf was in the head high range today with some larger peaks... it was holding up good, with nice shoulders. The week has begun! Looking ahead, it is only getting bigger from here for the next four days. It looks to be peaking Weds/Thurs at 7 ft at 16-18 seconds... Not sure how big that will be... I am hoping double overhead peaks, and still manageable... but we'll see.

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa (Mal Pais) - (11/3)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Solid chest to head high waves. All beachbreaks are peaky with good conditions.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Weather is improving. Mornings have less chance of storms than afternoons.

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco - (11/3)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Theres surf , some great fun head-high waves to be had and everyones talking about whats coming ! Weather is okay , not raining except at night and partly cloudy days ! Tourism is improving here as season gets close ! If you own or operate a surf school here call me , we have some great deals on a few Kym Thompson 3 phase epoxy longboards . They wont last long for sale but they have an incredible life expectancy and they ride real well too ! Only have 3 sizes 7'8",8'4", and some 9'6"s . Stock is good at the moment but last week we sold a bunch so get em while you can ! Stand up paddle boards are on the way too along with extra paddles , this is going to go crazy here in summer for sure. AREA REPORTS

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (10/25)-

Another sunny day. I don't think it has rained at all this entire week, which is a welcome relief from this otherwise monsoonal rainy season. Waves are good too, with chest to shoulder high waves breaking out in front of our hotel, and the conditions are still glassy and its almost 1:00 pm. Right now, the tide is rising and the waves are a bit slower than earlier, but still very surfable. I'd suggest taking out the longboard for some fun rides. Water quality is improving, due to the lack of rain. The bay is clearing up and the ocean is starting to look inviting again. Lets, hope this continues. A month from now, we will be wondering if the constant deluge this rainy season was real. We are expecting the swell to pick up over the next few days. Keep checking back for updates.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (10/27)

We have had beautiful sunny skies with no rain for the last few days. It rained a bit today but that is normal for this time of year. The surf has been small with fun shape at the incoming tides. Water temp is 83 degrees and the water quality at Playa Negra is good. Look for an increase in swell from the SW for this weekend with well overhead waves with good shape. The wind should be light offshore in the mornings but coming onshore fairly early. It's a very low tide all though the mornings this week. Watch out for those rocks. The surf stays in the headhigh to overhead range through the end of the month. Happy Holloween.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: New bikini girls at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (10/29)

Hola folks, afternoon update... a bit of rain settling in, and some onshores, but we did have good session this morning... but the water is a bit cold.. it may have dropped below 78 degrees??? weird.

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa (Mal Pais) - (10/27)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: 3 to 4 foot faces - some sneaker sets at 6 to 8 ft. More sun than rain this last week, so water conditions are improving.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Swell seems to be building. Off shore winds Saturday

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Suck Rock or Playa Santa Teresa.

AREA REPORTS

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (10/19)-

What can I say??? It has been very rainy (extreme flooding throughout Costa Rica) and the result is chocolate brown water in Tamarindo accompanied with non-stop onshore winds for the past week, not the best surfing conditions. I guess that's why its called "The Wet Season".

On a brighter note, there is swell!!! Its been head high for the past week. Hopefully, the winds will clean up a bit in the morning. The report from Avellanas is that the water was much clearer with lots of potential if someone can turn off the onshore wind machine. I'll talk to Joe!!!

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (10/19)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been small and blown out for the last few days with rain pretty much 24/7. We are suppose to get less rain this upcoming week and I'll believe it when I see it. The surf should pick too out of the SW with waves on Saturday reaching in the double overhead range. If that pesky onshore wind stays down it should be fun. We have the high tide running through the mornings right now so the early birds could get some surfable waves.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: New bikini girls at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (10/20)

Surf in Guiones today is a bit better than it has been. We have a good swell showing at 7.5 ft at 16 seconds. It is a bit out of the South with the direction of 203 degrees, but it has plenty of size to get into the bay. It is not raining at report time, but we did get some last night again. Hopefully these are the death-throws of the rainy season, and it will be nice again soon!

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco (10/21) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: 8 feet perfect with crystal clear water ! What are you talking about water quality ! Somewhere its like that! Jaco today not too bad , a bit of debris on the beach water green not brown like it's been and 3-5 ft faces and really quite fun, super peaky with a sneeker set here and there! Raining again right now and its supoosed to grow a bit size wise so let's see what tomorrow brings but don't be afraid the waves are fine and the pollution[bad stuff] not dirt, that we could have had got flushed out months ago by the first rains !!! NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Monday starts out 1 to 2 foot overhead, smaller with the tide going out, and the macking sets arriving with incoming tide. Lots of chop due to the wind and rain (what else can you expect for October) but the dawn patrol will be the call for later in the week. Thursday shows the waves dropping down to overhead. As the tide fills in Friday afternoon, a new round of SW swell arrives, pushing sets up to 2 foot overhead. Saturday the waves reach their peak at 2-3 foot overhead, with even bigger freak sets every 30 minutes. It drops off two feet Sunday, and stays a foot overhead through next Tuesday.

Caribbean - The week starts out flat and stays that way. Less chance for showers since the Caribbean Sea is quiet.

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (10/14) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We still have relatively clean water here on this end of the bay while theTamarindo side is chocolate milk after it rains. The surf has been consistently poor this week with all the on shores in spite of the non stop swells.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Not much!

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Take a break.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (10/13)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been in the headhigh range with strong onshores 24/7. October is the height of the rainy season and we have been getting plenty of it. Not much surfing going on here. With all the muddy runoff the ocean looks like chocolate milk. Water temp is running in the low 80s.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same as a low pressure centered just north of Costa Rica has stalled giving us mucho lluvia and plenty of that onshore wind.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The beach is not such a hot place to be this weekend so check the cable tv or get those things done you have been putting off.

The rain has let off for a bit here in Guiones, but the waves aren't yet clean. Surf height is in the head high range and the form is not good, with pretty yucky water and lots of chop. It could clean up in a day or so, but we probably won't see it today.

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa (Mal Pais) - (10/13)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Chest high at best. Sloppy, windy, rainy conditions. Lots of brown soup from the que brada runoffs.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Stormy, windy conditions are expected to increase. Small, sloppy swell.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Not much to choose from.

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco (10/13) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Surf is surprisingly good here in Jaco, water is muddie and you need to use super sticky wax but its been clean and peaky at 3-5 ft faces . Its pouring down again and I will tell you it's one of the longest lasting rains I have seen, Lorenzo and I were talking about one in like 92 0r 93 that lasted almost nonstop for 2 weeks so if this one gets backed up by another low pressure we may have a record runner! Sorry for the lowlying homes around, they are just getting hammered . Drive safe and if you want sun go to the caribe side, Say hi to Herschel in Puerto Viejo for us !! Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF !

** From Andrea at Waves CR Surf Camp in Playa Hermosa -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: 3 a 4 pies, desordenado, mucho viento, tormenta. No ha parado de llover en una semana

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Al parecer va a seguir lloviendo, se aproxima un swell

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Jaco, puede ser Playa Hermosa se arregle

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (10/7) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The swell has been holding from overhead to head high and is fairly clean in spite of the flukey wind conditions.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): It's difficult to predict right now. The few surfers hanging on it are occassionally well rewarded with uncrowded, great surf. The offshore trades could begin any day now.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (10/5)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been in the fun zone with head high sets. This is the rainy season and it is raining in the mornings and almost all night. The ocean has been glassy with fair conditions and 83 degree water. Very uncrowded.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect chest high sets with the occasional head high wave. Expect more rain.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We are coming up on the low tide in the mornings so sleep in and hit Playa Negra around 8:00 or 9:00. You might just be all alone.

Surf on this evening was kind of sloppy, but there were still good ones rolling through. The forecast is not looking too good with the longest period of the week coming in at 8 seconds. It still could be fun if local conditions cooperate, but this time of year who knows. We have a low tide tomorrow morning at 7:38am, So with small conditions that should help us out.

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa (Mal Pais) - (10/6)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Chest to head high. Some wind-rain in the afternoon.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same.

CR Surf Report for 9-30-07

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 9, Issue 401
September 30th, 2007

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Waves are chest to head high up north and a foot bigger south of Hermosa. The SSW swell arrives Monday as the tide fills in, and waves will increase to 1-2 foot overhead. The same size swell sticks around through Wednesday, with bigger sets in the morning. Then it drops a foot for Thursday and Friday. Saturday a SW swell fills in the south facing beaches with more 1 foot overhead waves for the next three days. After that, it looks to be small (chest to head) since there's no other wave makers out there.

Caribbean - The right coast starts out with waist high surf, but by Monday is knee high and then it is flat - great snorkeling conditions through Friday. Of course this area is prime time for hurricane formation so the forecast can change quickly. But for now, flatness.

To do your own forecast - use our links at www.crsurf.com/surflink.html

TIDES for 9/30/07 (add ~50 min. each day)

Low Tide - (-1.02) feet at 11:02 a.m.
High Tide - 9.46 feet at 5:16 p.m.

New Moon - September 26th

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (9/29) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The morning and evening glass offs are bringing rideable sessions in the head high range. Although the wind is not off shore, the wave shape is generally OK and uncrowded. This little swell is particularly clean.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): As we move toward the morning high tides, the possibilities for better surf are increasing.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are peaks all up and down the beach.

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo - (9/26)

Today the surf backed off a bit from the overhead surf that was here all weekend. The report from Witch's Rock was shoulder high with the occasional head high set, but perfect A-frame peaks. Out in front of our hotel the surf was in the waist to chest high range but very fun even after the wind came up this afternoon. The forecast is more small surf until Sunday / Monday when the waves should get overhead again.

For those that care, Luis Castro traveled down to Mal Pais / Santa Teresa for the first surf contest of the season. He won the airshow with some sick spinning aerials. I have no idea what to call some of the maneuvers he does. All I know is that he can blast. He also entered the Bodyboarding division and won that too. Nice job Luis!!!

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (9/28)

The surf here has been small the last couple days. Waist to chest high and mixed up. Onshore wind early. The full moon low tide running through the mornings doesn'r help much either. Partly cloudy in the mornings and raining in the afternoons. Water temp is 87 degrees. Look for continued small and weak through the weekend with an increase from the SW for the start of the week.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: If you can't get here, check it out at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (9/30)

Good Sunday folks... How are my people today? I ate chicken wings and drank great beer last night, watched my Gators lose, but everything can't always be perfect... Surf today in Guiones should be pretty good, as we have a 4 foot at 16 seconds swell in the water, at 216 degrees, which is about our best direction, but it is raining and the water is pretty dirty... Here is the note from Ry-dog our surf reporter for the next little while... "Hey, there was some pretty heavy rain late last night/early this morning. as such, the water is looking fairly sucio and there was not a soul out there at report time. unfortunate, because last night was small but super fun...nice formed waves which i shredded diligently with the Webskins. it is still raining lightly at the moment, but there is a chance it could clear up this afternoon and perhaps be some good surfing. It looked like there was still a few little ones trying to roll in right now." And I do have some good news on the bridge front!!! According to Bobbi Johnson, who is about as in there as you can get in Nosara, there is a temporary bridge being put in very soon... If you have more details, shoot them over, and we can keep the folks informed... Thanks for the note Bobbi..

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa (Mal Pais) - (9/29)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Head High - some overhead sets. Scattered thunderstorms.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): SSW swell should hang around for a few days. Thunderstorms continue.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: All beaches should be firing with the expected SSW swell.
