Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 8, Issue 324
March 12th, 2006

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Overhead surf starts to die Monday morning, with the sets coming only once every half hour. By dark it's only head high, and the next morning only chest high with some head high sets. Smaller surf for the rest of the week. Stays chest high until Saturday afternoon, when the incoming SSW swell shows a few overhead sets. By Sunday it's back to overhead and a foot overhead by the following Monday. The long call is for overhead surf all next week from the SSW.

Caribbean - Big straight east swell slapping the coast with surf two foot overhead on every set. Biggest on Monday morning, with the sets starting to disappear by the next morning. Tuesday and Wednesday hold consistent head high to overhead surf dropping slowly. Thursday it's down to chest high with a head high set each hour. For Friday, same size but more consistent sets with another ESE arriving Saturday.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 3/11)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We enjoyed great over head surf all week as the swell shrunk and then today the wind switched to on shore just as the tide got high enough. WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): High tide is heading for the afternoon sessions and the wind needs to hold at least until noon, which it didn't do on Friday. BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The peak to the right, and in front, of the hotel has been particularly good.

** From Stephen at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Early morning has been the key lately, winds have been strong and making afternoon surf difficult and sloppy. We were looking at about 3 feet and mushy.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): SW swell is looking good, but not until about Tuesday, but the winds will have an effect. Try for early mornings, but don't expect much more than waist high with lots of time between sets.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin d e semana en su area: Early mornings on open facing beaches such as Guiones will have something to mess around on. Grab a longboard and have fun!
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Crowds from USA spring breakers, get out early to avoid.

** From John Lyman Photography in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We've had it all this week. Big good surf, small fun surf, hard offshores and pleseant sea breezes. The upcoming week will have more surprises too.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): This weekend sees chest to headhigh waves with light offshores in the mornings and maybe a bit onshore in the afternoons. Look for it to start picking up out of the south Monday and peak Tuesday with headhigh and a few overhead sets. This swell is really south and probably won't hit Negra as hard as last weeks south swell. It backs down to fun stuff for the second half of the week.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: It's low tide in the mornings now and coming up on a full moon. Keep that in mind when you choose where to surf and then check out Avellanas rivermouth when the swell starts showing.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: If you're in Tamarindo, get some photos of your session. John Lyman Photos,,, lymanphoto@... or

** From Coconut Harry's Surf Shop in Playa Nosara -

Hola for Nosara (Playa Guiones). Surf is shoulder high with occassional bigger set waves and good shape. Winds have been offshore and/or light all week. Contact Matt Adame from Soul Arch Photography for some great shots of last week's CNS contest.

** From Jesse at Samara Surf School in Playa Samara -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The
swell is back! 3 to 5 foot waves rolling in. Best conditions are through the 6 hour span of high tide. The tides are lower now so the waves aren't as full. Easier to catch. A little choppy, soft peaks with great mid day seshs. Occasional off shore winds, for perfect wave conditions.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell expected to hold over the weekend, but will back down to the normal Samara sized waves. Perfect whitewater conditions, Great for beginners and children. Lots of waves to catch, good inside break, nice small waves.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The best surfing spot in Samara is right in front of the Las Brisas Del Pacifico hotel. No crowds or localism, with the waves breaking a little farther off shore.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: The conditions in Samara are good for all surfers to come and enjoy!! So if you've always wanted to learn surfing come on down or over! Always great conditions for beginner to intermediate lessons! Pura Vida www.samarasurfschool.com

** From Chuck at Walking On Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Boy oh BOY ! What great waves we have had here in the Central Pacific , I have been surfing for at least 2 - 3 hrs a day every day for 10 days and it's been clean peaky with favorable winds until the suns too hot anyways ! Todays waves were 3-5 ft faces with a bigger one here and there super nice shape and yes quite a few guys out but everyone was nice enough and shared a few with the less fortunate souls who didn't paddle so well, saw a couple of guys out on the outside reef getting some long slow sliders too but the middle bowl was just unreal and the the catacombs section just started going off with the higher tide , whata great day and wish you were here ! Oh first person to correctly name the spot I surfed today gets a free W.O.W. surf T-SHIRT ! SEND ME AN E-MAIL ! Pura Vida , Chuck and the crew at W.O.W. SURF where surfing is truly WALKING ON WATER !

** From Brice at Land Assurance Tree Reforestation in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Shoulder high and a little closed out.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves):Finally, the first big southern of the season should hit this Sunday. Should have waves well overhead coming in with great shape (looks to be about 188 degrees). Then, if the weather man is at all honest, we should have another hit from the same direction on the following weekend. Get your short boards ready!!!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA:I imagine every beach in southern Costa Rica will be going off by Monday. Certainly, the beach at Dominical and "The Point" will be working. If you are looking for smaller waves, I'd go down to Uvita (el Chamán/La Colonia) or Ventanas.
