NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - (I take no responsibility for impulsive plane ticket
purchases that result in the jinxing of this forecast. However, I do
have a reputation to keep so call me out if I miss this one.) A week
from next Wednesday - March 9th - the first solid swell of the year
will arrive. Both a NW and SW combo for solid double overhead
conditions, and a foot overhead at sheltered spots. Even better news
is that the swell lasts for a week to two weeks straight. Until
then, chest to head high up north and a foot bigger from Hermosa
south for the weekend and until Tuesday. Then consistent overhead
surf for Wednesday through next weekend from a West swell with a 12
second period.

Caribbean - The weekend starts with chest to head high waves from
the ESE and then the sets disappear by Sunday evening. Waist to
chest on Monday, and then Tuesday and Wednesday, only occasional
chest high surf. Waist high through to next weekend with a foot
boost from the East coming next Saturday.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop (& Surf Lessons) in Tamarindo -

The rivermouth has been the spot this week! All of the Tamarindo
spots have been pretty much flat this week except the rivermouth was
firing rights at all tides there for a few days--wow! Yesterday the
wind went on shore in the afternoon and the water temperature is up
a few more degrees.
Ayer el viento estaba on

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): It looks like on Monday things
are supposed to pick up a little, so be patient through the weekend.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Langosta has got waves, but
is reported as super-crowded, same for Grande. In Tamarindo check
out the rivermouth but be prepared to share. I heard it got nasty
over there the other day and that makes me sick.

** Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

The week started out with epic over head sessions off and on until
Wed. when the wind turned on us in the afternoon at high tide.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): Dawn Patrol is the call for small
well shaped surf.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Look for the areas along the
beach where the bigger waves are being focused and have good shape.

** Joe at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

The surf this past week hasn't been as spectacular as its been in
recent weeks. Our NW swell died off by Tuesday, after pulsing a bit
Sunday/Monday timeframe. The winds have been offshore until today,
Friday 25th. We are awaiting a new NW swell that should push us up
to shoulder-head high in Tamarindo proper, with some reefs and
beachbreaks in the area seeing overhead surf. The big swell is an
early south swell, looking to hit our coast by Thursday of next
week. Until the surf reappears its cold Imperials in the WRSC Bar &
Grill. See you here, and go Chargers! pura vida, joe
http://www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com

** From Coconut Harry in Playa Guiones (Nosara) -

Waist to chest high, with occasional headhigh set waves sneaking in.
Good shape - best around higher tides. BIC surfboards now available
in Costa Rica - new shipment arriving this week - call me at 682-
0574 or email me at surfa@... Pura Vida, Coconut Harry -

Sunrise: 5:59AM Sunset: 5:49 PM, Current Conditions - The surf is
picking up as we see the early arrival of a new swell, PURA VIDA!!!!

QUEPOS & MANUEL ANTONIO

DOMINICAL & OSA

CARIBBEAN

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

Wave height is the same as it has been for a while now. A few head
high sets with mostly shoulder high closed-out waves. Some good
shoulder rides at mid to high tide. High tide in the middle of the
day with on-shore wind. Frustrating.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): I think this could be really
good. It looks like some waves may be coming from the south (190
degrees). They don't look big, but Dominical always takes anything
the south can deliver.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Right now the surf is at
Dominical or Hermosa (south of Dominical by about 10 minute drive).
However, on Monday or Tuesday, when the southern swell arrives,
it'll be happening at Domincal and at the point if the swell is big
enough.

** From the Cashew Hill Lodge in Puerto Viejo -

chest high, good form

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: definitely
worth a trip to the southern Caribbean to catch this surf!!

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop (& Surf Lessons) in Tamarindo -

The wind has been a little more calm this week, so that water isn't
as cold as it was last week. The waves are pretty small--two to
three feet at high tide.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): It looks like another weekend of
small surf in Tamarindo. Lots of sun for mid-day sessions. Parece
Mucho
sol para surfear al medi dia.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Langosta should have the best
wave within walking distance. Playa Grande will be nice but is
usually crowded on the weekends.

** Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

Near perfect head high to overhead surf running all week. Some
deterioration in shape on Thurs. with the larger sets and then
straightening out uncharacteristically at the lower tides.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): It looks good if the swell holds
or doesn't get too big.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The entire bay has good surf
at some tide. Yesterday some surfers started at the Tamarindo River
mouth at dawn, moved to Baulas at 3/4, then Playa Grande at full and
going out and finished at Baulas. Came back for grub and the caught
Tamarindo River mouth at dusk. Breaks which are all 5 min. from each
other in Playa Grande. Unfortunately, they slept in today and missed
dawn patrol.

** Joe at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Surf has been epic every day this
week, finally getting smaller today but still good. The rivermouth
looked better than Ollie's, with 2-3 second makeable barrels. Its
been sick. I'm not sure whats up with this next swell, plus some
heavy winds from American Samoa may bring a new direction swell to
the area?....I'm no weatherman so while you're figuring it out I'll
be out surfing. pura vida! www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com * One of our
guys from WRSC Josymar is now ranked 4th....he's one of the new
sponsored WRSC surfers.

** From Coconut Harry in Playa Guiones (Nosara) -

Surf is overhead with great walls and long rides. Wind has been
turing onshore about midday, but backing off again around 4:30 pm.
Size has diminished a little from earlier this week - still plenty
of "juice". BIC surfboards now available in Costa Rica - new
shipment arriving this week - call me at 682-0574 or email me at

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop (& Surf Lessons) in Tamarindo -

With this new moon, the tides are super-high/low, so mid-tide looks
like high tide this weekend and high tide looks like a flood. Winds
are strong off-shore, surf is waist high with a few chest sets now
and then.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas):

It doesn't look like the surf is going to pick up yet, so expect
nice late-afternoon sessions on the incoming tide. Wave size will
probably be about the same. No parece que las olas cambiaran de
tamano hasta la otra semana. Las tardes justo antes del atardecer
sera el mejor momento para surfear.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

The beach break in Tamarindo is small and really nice, buy crowded
at the high tides. If you're a confident surfer and want a little
space, try Langosta in the early afternoon. It might not be big, but
there will be less people.
mediodia. No sera grande, pero habra menos gente.

** Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

The surf has been jumping up and down all week for overhead and a
half consistent sets to shoulder high. With the constant off shores
the quality has been excellent with some misto sessions here and
there. This is very typical surf for this time of the year - maybe a
little on the better than average side. I surfed the main peak 3
times this week with a maximum of one other person to share it with.
A good vibe in the water this week with very little hustling.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
are great for the surf here allowing us double sessions and less
people in the water. The sand is excellent, but is beginning to
change. I'm not sure it can get much better, but we'll see.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
has been breaking. There's waves everywhere.

** Joe at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The surf got smaller and smaller
throughout the week, but conditions were still great. Offshore winds
every day, waves in the shoulder high plus range, things don't get
much better than that! Plus, I just surfed Witch's Rock yesterday
afternoon and the swell was still overhead on the sets. Not bad as
there were only 6 people out...

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - I feel like its
Christmas as we keep getting these NW swells one after another after
another after another etc. Yes, another one should hit Sunday/Monday
timeframe, and at least 1-2foot overhead, probably bigger. With
these winds and these swells, this is shaping up to be one of the
better seasons I can remember in a while.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - Tamarindo Rivermouth
has been firing, get ready for big ol barrels. And if you're really
ready for some serious surf I'll see you at the rock.

** From High Tide Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar

CARIBBEAN

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - The waves are generally shoulder
high with an occational head high set coming along. The great thing,
however, is that there are two very distinct and very evenly matched
swells coming in one from the north and one from the south. So,
where the two waves meet, there are some great peaky rides to be had
(and at the very peak, if one is lucky enough to be there, can be
found a good overhead ride).

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - From LOLA it
appears that there will be a continuing 3-4' swell (At Dominical,
that translates to about shoulder-to-head high ride) but it appears
that only the southern wave will remain. So, those peaky sets will
probably die out and the conditions will be a little more closed
out. You'll enjoy the mid-tide session the most.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - With the peaky
condition, the whole beach from Roca Verde to the river mouth (and
even some folks to the north) was available. Most likely, we'll find
a crowd off of Tortilla flats again this weekend. Too small for the
point and too closed out for the northern part of the beach.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop (& Surf Lessons) in Tamarindo -

The north swell that started out the week has been steadily fading.
Early this week Pico Pequeno was breaking almost head high, the left
at Pico Grande was easily head high and long. The main beach break
was basically missing it, but the river mouth was throwing out small
right barrels.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): The wind has been picking up, so
expect to paddle hard. Pico Grande and Pequeno still work on what's
left of the swell, especially at a mid tide. As the south pulse
picks up, maybe the beach break will come back to life.
beach break volvera a vivir.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: In Tamarindo, look for waves
at the river mouth and at Pico Pequeno. Check out Avellanas as the
south picks up.

** Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

This was an amazing week of surf. Classic Playa Grande conditions
with many days of just over head peaks and long fast walls. The
crowds came and went. There was good surf all up and down the bay
including Villa Baulas, Tamarindo, and Chicken Head Rock. I even had
a couple of hour long sessions with no one out on the peak. While
many of the spots like Witches were windy, Playa Grande was for the
most part clean, smooth, and sculpted. The sand is so good here we
are even catching some pretty good mid-tide surf.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): The high tides are in the morning
and weak which is the formula for a high probability for good surf.
The sand is perfect for the possibility of 6 hour sessions. The
offshores are a given for this time of the year and our ring of
hills (unique to Playa Grande) should keep the unmanageable gusts
off us. BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor
lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: If it's real small
every one and their rasta friends will be here and if it's too big
we're going to slip down to the Tamarindo River mouth and surf with
the crocodiles.

** Joe at Witches Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - There has been waves for days on
end. These offshore winds, combined with a second NW swell that just
doesn't seem to ever die, has produced solid rights off the
Tamarindo Rivermouth. Surf has been at its best, it hasn't broken
like this for two years and the best news is that everyone is surfed
out. I've been watching waves from the camp go unridden all week
long!! After I got two back to back in/out barrels in front of the
estuary, I can personally say its the best I've seen it in a
LOOOOOOOONG time!

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - The surf seems to
be sticking around and only getting better as this weekend a late
season SW swell should fill in, starting Sunday and increasing in
size through Monday/Tuesday. Expect only more waves to go around, as
everyone will probably be watching football.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - I won't say this too
much, but THE TAMARINDO RIVERMOUTH. Yes, its true. Maybe even better
than Witch's Rock right now, which doesn't happen all that often.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- No, the Chargers aren't in the Super Bowl.
Good news is you can visit us at www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com and
forget all about real life issues for a few days/weeks. Check us out
and call our 800-number for availability. Surfs Up! - joe

** From High Tide Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

2-3 ft out front in Jaco today, great longboard conditions for sure!
Winds favorable till 10 then a switch to sideshore from the north.
Biz is good and the town is super busy. Thanks to my Friends Louis
Wilson from Las Tortugas [PLAYA GRANDE} and Julio and Rodolfo from
HIGH TIDE SURF SHOP for the BIENVENIDO last week in Guanacaste,
waves not great but had some fun little ones! Oh anybody at Playa
Negra giving any lessons in SURF ETIQUETTE? How can there only be 8
guys out in the water and have out of 6 waves had to share 4 of them
with a rider out front? Remember the rider deepest on the wave has
priority and especially if he is making his waves should be left
alone? Sometimes we all share a wave or 2 with our friends but the
best surfers don't snake other guys in the water, sure maybe they
don't need to and have the paddle ability to get there and on the
wave at the right time and the best sets seem to always come to them
but that's why time in the water counts. Be respectful and DON'T
DROP IN ON SURFERS ALREADY RIDING WAVES! Best bet is usually to only
ride your waves alone! Learn the little things about surfing as well
as the act of riding waves and no matter where you are from always
be a proud representative of your people! PURA VIDA and remember

many of the spots like Witches were windy, Playa Grande was for the
most part clean, smooth, and sculpted.
