CR Surf Report for 9-23-07

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 9, Issue 400
September 23rd, 2007

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The week starts strong with surf 2-3 foot overhead on the sets and plenty of overhead waves in between. The SSW swell stays around Tuesday and Wednesday, dropping to 1-2 foot overhead. Thursday starts to see a more pronounced drop, overhead with sets a foot bigger. Friday and Saturday will be head high with fewer bigger sets.

Caribbean - Surf on Monday will be waist high and clean. A few chest high sets arrive Tuesday, but are gone again by Wednesday midday. Then it's knee to waist high leftovers until the weekend. Good chance for tropical flareups since this is the time of the year for Caribbean storms.

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (9/22) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Rainy and messy just overhead surf.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same. If the on shores let off it could get interesting.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Internet

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (9/23)

The last couple days we have had plenty of rain. Raining all day but the surf has been fun anyways. The wind has been offshore most of the time and the waves are head high with bigger sets. The water temp is in the low 80s. Lots of runoff into the ocean from all the rain. We have a good swell coming for this weekend. SW with a perfect direction for Playa Negra. Look for well overhead waves with good shape staying with us through the first half of this upcoming week. High tide is running through the mornings and that's a good thing for Playa Negra. It should be real fun at Playa Avellanas as well. Crowds are at a minimum this time of year.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: If you can't get here, check it out at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (9/23)

Well, it isn't firing, but it is the best it has been in a little while... some head high waves that look make-able... The wind is light onshore at report time, and it didn't storm too bad last night, so it isn't as funky as it has been lately. All-in-all, folks would be skipping work in FL, so I guess it is all prospective. I think I will grab a surf after throwing this report up. We have a low tide that passed at 6AM, so it should be holding up a bit more later in the morning. I surfed last night and caught four closeouts and paddled in... couldn't find a make-able section... I only saw one guy get a good wave, and it was Luigi back-dooring a left barrel, it was sweet, but the ride was less than 3 seconds. Hey, has anyone driven to Nicoya this week?

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa (Mal Pais) - (9/22)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Head high - with some overhead sets. Light wind - thunderstorms in the afternoon.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Swell seems to be building. Maybe 1 - 2 ft overhead.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Carmen is consistent.

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco (9/23)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Well Im a bit late but thanks to [in part] CR SURF we are busy ! Waves are fun its coming up for sure a couple of overhead ones at Escondida came thru this afternoon . Barranca could be the call for Monday A.M. Conditions were not so good for Oeste today too much fresh push from the south and it was a bit messy . I expect we should have some fun waves during the week as long as the wind doesn't blow ! Sandbars are nice here and with this peaky multi direccion swell its right on for us ! Pura Vida, Happy Surfing ! Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF !

** From Marco at Manuel Antonio Surf School (9/22)-

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical (9/22)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Super nice low tide waves. A little bit overhead with long, hollow shoulders and lots of hoot'n and holler'n by the sea monkeys.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): At least head and a half on Sunday and a continuing strong swell through mid week next week.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The point might work on Sunday, but right now the beach is excellent.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS: I'll be leaving for Indonesia on Wednesday (where the sets are showing 20' faces on wetsand.com ) and will be gone for a month. I might post my Dominical beach report with the waves from the Mentawais just to make you jealous.
