Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 9, Issue 382
May 7th, 2007

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Surf headhigh to overhead at the best spots up north, and a foot bigger farther south. Swell from the SSW fades on Tuesday, waves down to chest high in the Guanacaste area. Wednesday and Thursday have some overhead surf from the Southern Pacific from a short period swell, but doesn't last to the weekend. More chest to head high surf with an occasional overhead set with the tidal push. Smaller up north. The next BIG swell won't arrive until the 20th, so get your work done now.

Caribbean - Dropping swell - down from chest high Monday morning to waist high by the evening. Stays waist high all week, with a rare bigger set in the hours just before high tide. Weak swell to push in Thursday evening, but only bringing a few more chest high sets.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 5/5 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Sloppy, fairly large, surf.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): We will need some rain and off shores in the afternoon to straighten this up. The early morning high tides starting on Monday look promising for over head conditions and maybe a smooth ocean.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Anywhere on the north end of the bay.

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

With my crappy dial up internet I log in and give you all this report. In a nutshell, there is still a ton of swell. You'll find very fun waves at Playa Grande, Casitas, Tamarindo, Langosta, Avellanas, Negra, Junquial, and Marbella. Thats a lot of options, so hopefully you're reading this and setting your alarm clock instead of raging at the Mambo Bar or whatever.

Saturday Cinco de May was the peak of the swell. Little Hawaii was a spot to be, just ask Matt the restaurant manager who was getting shacked there all morning before huevos rancheros at mono congo. I surfed the Rivermouth here in Avellanas and it sucked, so don't bother surfing it during this swell. Its too west. Or north. Or south. Whatever, it sucked. In the afternoon I surfed the reefs in front of the parking lot and it was fun, but not epic.

Sunday, I surfed Negra in the pm. It was fun, still plenty of size with the head high set coming in very often. The wind hasn't been laying down much so theres a bit of chop until the last hour of light.

Monday, I'm expecting the surf to be about the same size. You'll find waves everywhere you go, so if you get on it early and start at Grande and work your way south, you'll score some waves somewhere (probably Grande). If you're surfing down south I'll see you there. Get out early before the wind kills it.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Playa Negra had some fun headhigh waves with light onshores all day. With only a few people around under partly cloudy skies, the locals got it all today. Look for bigger surf this weekend as a new SW pushes in with well overhead waves with good to great shape. Glassy or light offshores in the mornings and onshore in the afternoons with a chance of some rain later in the day.

** From Steve at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waves have been fun all week. Chest to overhead on the sets with some power. Some really good late morning early afternoon sessions. Sometimes a little onshore wind is not such a bad thing especially for the late sleepers or people that have jobs...Waves now are 3-5 ft with power but a little sloppy with all the storms we've had the past couple of days. There are quite a few close-outs but the occasional nice set will come in and hold the section.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): We're expecting 3-5 ft for the weekend and decreasing some during the week. Hopefully the swell will clean up a bit on the way down.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: I've heard some great things about Camaronal the last week. I sent some clients on a surf/fish trip there on Tuesday and they caught 6-8 ft clean waves with power and tubes. They also caught 4 fish on the way back including a nice yellowtail and a 50lb Rooster. Not a bad trip. Needless to say they were pretty stoked when they got back. Too bad I did not go with them..

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:
We've had lights the past couple of nights. I hear with the increase in rain we've had the power situation is looking better. I just wish Direct T.V. had the NBA playoffs so I coould make good use of the electricity.. Adios for now..

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: SOME FUN IF INTERESTING WAVES TONITE HERE, AROUND 4-6 FT FACES WITH A BIG ONE HERE AND THERE , A BIT CLOSED OUT BUT GOT A COUPLE OF DECENT WAVES OUT THERE ! Rains stayed in the mountains so we missed out on offshores but I think tomorrow will be the session ! See Ya there !

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Incredibly nice waves!!! They are almost all head high to slightly overhead with occasional head-and-a-half slammers coming through. Very peaky form creating lots of shoulders. Often two waves from two angles collide giving either a perfect peak (if convex) or one of those traps that send a tunnel from the wrong direction right at your ride (if concave). In any case, I've been doubling up on my sessions. I can't get enough of it.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Looks like the size should hold through Sunday/Monday and we should be down to a smaller wave by Tuesday. The tide is perfect for double sessions!

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach is working for strong surfers but is a bit much for occasional/beginner surfers. The point is working but just barely. Only the big sets break on the boil and these sets are only coming in every 15 minutes or so. I would think Hermosa would be a good choice for an easier ride than the beach but I haven't been there to check it out.
