NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Expect major tide swings over the next four days with the
new moon in full effect. No swell hitting the northern or southern
coasts, so the waves drop from head high to chest high Monday to
waist to chest by Tuesday afternoon. Best chance of surf will be
midtide coming in. Slight NW swell hits the Guanacaste coast
Wednesday, pushing the waves up to chest high, but dropping again
Thursday. A weak SW swell will show up Saturday afternoon, pushing
in waves up to head high, but nothing bigger for the weekend or the
start of next week.

Caribbean - Strong ENE swell continues with surf 2-3 foot overhead
Sunday and Monday, dropping down to a foot overhead on Tuesday with
bigger sets. Wednesday stays the same size with more infrequent sets
and Thursday it drops another foot. For Friday and the start of the
weekend expect surf overhead with a few 2 foot overhead sets, and by
Sunday the swell fades to head high. No new swell makers until next
Thursday.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 1/28)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

The swells just keep on coming, topping off the week with perfect
just overhead set waves. This swell is a little squared off and
tricky. The occasionally gusty wind is holding off shore all day.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): Not much change if the wind keeps
behaving.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Look for an empty peak near
the hotel or incoming at the Tamarindo Estero mouth.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

The wind has picked up to its normal dry-season frenzy in the last
few days. Waves in Tamarindo are waist high, chest at best. There
are some nice lefts right now rolling off of Pico Grande but you
have to paddle hard.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
The wind has
the south-moving current going and you gotta be strong to get into
these waves. A visit to the beach is an experience in free
exfoliation by real Costa Rican sand. Siga remando!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Pico Grande is good and the
left in front of the Diria works when there's enough water. Playa
Grande is angled out of the wind a little better.

** John Lyman Photos from Playa Negra at lymanphoto@... -

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Guanacaste coast on Monday morning will be small and
clean, chest high with head high sets at the premiere spots. Tuesday
gets smaller, waist to chest high and Wednesday stays the same. Then
Thursday a short period ground swell fills in from the NW pushing
surf up to head high with overhead sets. Friday looks the same in
the morning, but the size fades as the tide drops out. Saturday is
back to smaller chest high surf and Sunday will have similar size,
but less frequent sets. Looks small chest to head high at best for
the following week. For the central and south Pacific, chest to head
high, but getting weaker throughout the day. Down to chest high
Tuesday through Thursday, with Friday showing head high surf from
the SW. It only lasts 24 hours, as by Saturday it's back to chest
high and nothing major coming for the next eight days.

Caribbean - Powerful East swell smacking the coast with 2 to 3 foot
overhead surf. Stays strong on Monday, same size and set frequency
of every 15 minutes. By Tuesday it drops a foot in the morning and
another in the afternoon. Wednesday looks like head high with a few
overhead sets and Thursday the sets disappear but there are still a
lot of fun headhigh waves. Friday shows another East swell bringing
more surf a foot overhead.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 1/20)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

This week presented some of the best surf here I've seen in some
time. Overhead conditions with strong off shores for both morning
and evening sessions have come together for mysto Playa Grande surf.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): If it doesn't get too much
bigger, the excellent conditions should continue as the sessions
move into the morning window. Everyone is spread out leaving lighter
crowds.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The whole bay is lighting up
with our guests slipping down to the Tamarindo Estuary mouth for in-
coming. If you have the stamina you can stay out all day by moving
around.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

Waves in Tamarindo right now are chest to shoulder high at the high
tides and the wind has been solid off-shore. The water temperature
is dropping, but it's still not as cold as it usually is by this
time of year. The west-ish swell direction has Pico Grande working
in both directions and is throwing some nice lefts on the main beach
break in front of the parking lot.
parqueo.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): It's going to be a great weekend
for morning and sunset sessions. Even mid to lower tides have had
waves recently, so get out there any time.
quieres.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The Tamarindo river mouth is
good until the water level gets too high and the beach break picks
up at about that time.

** John Lyman Photos from Playa Negra at lymanphoto@... -

The waves have been good out of the southwest with over head,
offshore gems. Beautiful sunny skies and warm water.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): The surf will decrease over the
weekend then bump back up to overhead sets by Tuesday and last until
next weekend.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The main peak at Negra is the
spot.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: The surf is
happening at Playa Negra. Get photos of the best waves in C.R.--

** From Coconut Harry's Surf Shop in Playa Nosara -

Head-high set waves and great shape. Wind are off-shore or just
light on-shore. High tide in the mornings is best time. Pura Vida
from Coconut Harry http://www.coconutharrys.com/

** From Chuck at WOW Surf Shop in Playa Jaco -

Pretty fun wave shere in the central pacific right now , nothing
crazy but clean galssy conditions with light offshores in the
morning and 3-5 ft faces in Estirillos Oeste. Shore break was hollow
and the reef was super fun on longboards with a few all the way thru
and thumping ! Hardly anybody out and great weather so why not? See
Ya Soon ! Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF !

** From Brice at Land Assurance Tree Reforestation in Dominical -

The waves remain slightly overhead on the bigger sets, and if not
closed out, very fast, long rides. I don't see much slashing up and
down, but rather long fast rides desperate for speed.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same, but possibly a
few more peaks and a few less closed walls.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The current is pushing strong
to the south. So, starting at the river mouth at the north of Playa
Dominical has its advantage. Other than that, the beach looks good
from north of the river to Roca Verde.

quieres.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The Tamarindo river mouth is
good until the water level gets too high and the beach break picks
up at about that time.

The waves have been good out of the southwest with over head,
offshore gems. Beautiful sunny skies and warm water.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar

weekend then bump back up to overhead sets by Tuesday and last until
next weekend.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - On Monday, the fun head high sets dwindle down to chest
high along the southern coasts, while still arriving every half hour
up north. Tuesday is the same, and Wednesday the NW swell sets start
stacking up one foot overhead on the Guanacaste coast. Thursday
those overhead sets get more consistent and by Friday a 1-2 punch,
NW and SW combine to bring surf up to 1 to 2 feet overhead. Saturday
and Sunday stay 1-2 foot overhead all day.

Caribbean - ENE swell, chest to head high reaching it's peak Sunday
and starting to weaken by Monday afternoon. Tuesday stays chest high
from the NE, with one or two foot overhead sets coming from a long
range ground swell from the East. Those overhead waves become the
standard by Wednesday and by Thursday surf will be 1-2 foot overhead
with 3+ overhead sets - dangerous conditions on the beachbreaks.
Friday drops a foot but won't get less than overhead through the
weekend.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 1/14)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

With the high tides in the afternoon and a well shaped, just
overhead, swell, the wind has been the major factor in the quality
of the surf this week. Excellent sessions are being divined by savvy
surfers in between the swirling wind.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): By Sunday the daybreak window
begins to open and our morning off shore cycle begins again with
great promise.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

for the last few days is focusing on the main break in front of the
hotel.

The waves have been in the chest to head high range all week.
Beautiful sunny offshore mornings with the wind switching to onshore
by noonish.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): The next week should be about the
same with a nice bump from the southwest for Tuesday and Wednesday.
It's low tide middays this week so the earlier you hit it, the
better.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Negra should be the
spot early and then check out Avellanas Rivermouth for the low tide.

The swell has backed down a lot, there are some mini waves 3 to 4
foot waves coming in, good form. Off shore winds in the mornings,
then mostly choppy for the evening.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): A swell is expected to be coming
in. Hopefully bringing 6 to 7 foot waves, nice form. For the weekend
we have 3 to 4 foot waves, soft peaks, great for beginner surfers.
Good time to practice up on your skills. Perfect conditions for
starting in the whitewater.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a

some swell still left over firing off the reef. This week we should

** From Brice at Land Assurance Tree Reforestation in Dominical -

Finally! There are some good overhead waves at Dominical. They
appear to be a single event with very uniform and smooth shape.
Unfortunately, they are closing out at all but high tide at the main
Dominical beach. But, back to good news, the high tide is 5:00 so
you can get two sessions: the offshore mornings and the no wind
afternoons.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): It looks like more of the same.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
I haven't
seen Punta Dominical but imagine there isn't enough swell to make it
work. Try Playa Hermosa or Uvita to the south.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - The weekend's overhead surf quickly fades Monday morning,
leaving chest high remainders for Tuesday and not another bump up
until Wednesday evening. Thursday morning sees some head high relief
from SW, but it only lasts one day. By Friday it's down to chest
high and the dribble keeps coming in - chest with a rare head high
set for the weekend. The right coast looks more promising.

Caribbean - Great surf Monday, 2-3 foot overhead with bigger sets.
Lots of closeouts at the beachbreaks but the points look good.
Coming from the NNE, then switching Tuesday from the East. The swell
fades quickly Wednesday, down to a foot overhead. Thursday shows
headhigh with a few biggers sets with the same for Friday. Saturday
has more East swell on tap with more overhead sets.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 1/6)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

We have been enjoying a perrfect, slightly overhead, inconsistent
swell. It has a little better angle than last week and the off
shores have been holding for morning and evening sessions.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): It looks pretty good for the
morning session starting at daybreak as the tide moves away from the
afternoon go out.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: This swell is hitting the
whole bay. Just pick a spot with nobody out and enjoy.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

The Christmas swell lasted into the beginning of this week, but now
has passed. Waves in Tamarindo are waist to chest high and the wind
is shifty--sometimes perfect, sometimes not. The extremely high
tides this week made it necessary to surf at mid and low tides.
medias.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): This should be a grea t surf
weekend because the high tides are in the morning and the morning
wind is generally cooperative. There were some nice lefts in front
of the Diria this morning at high tide.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Check the Diria at high tide,
Pico Grande at little lower tide and Langosta afterward.
y Langosta despues.

** John Lyman Photos from Playa Negra at lymanphoto@... -

The waves have been knee to head high depending on the tide with
even the occasional just overhead set that catches everybody inside.
Some days it offshore all day some days onshore and even some
sprinkles this afternoon.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
moderate offshores all day. This is January after all. The surf will
stay in the fun range with longboarders getting the goods.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Avellanas has been really
good at the rivermouth but don't tell anybody. High tides running
through midday this week means those beachbreaks and reefs that pull

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 12/31)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

In spite of the consistent westerly head high swell this week, the
light wind has been switching on shore early since Wed. and turning
our break into Florida afternoon surf. It is still surfable since
the wind is light, but somewhat blown out for the afternoon higher
tides.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell is here and I expect
the wind to cooperate more beginning on Sat. There will be a nice
possibility for evening glass off or slight off shores. The whole
world and their sisters are here.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: We've been slipping down to
Tamarindo - 5 min. - on the service road and catching it early
there.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

This seems like it can't be true, but the swell is still pumping out
there. The wind has been shifty and on-shore some afternoons this
week, but mornings have been off-shore consistantly and you can surf
at any tide. There are a lot of rips and swirly currents that
accompany these swells, so beware.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasa r
este fin de semana (clima y olas): There's a lot of surf this
weekend and a lot of people to share it with.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Pico Grande is the spot
that's been throwing the most consistant, rideable wave in
Tamarindo. A lot of other places have been closed out due to the
size of the swell. Henrys works too but watch out for rocks. Pico

** From John Lyman Photography, covering from Ollies to Ostianal -

The waves here at Playa Negra are in the headhigh with a few just
overhead sets. Beautiful sunny offshore mornings are on tap with
light onshores in the afternoons and those classic evening glassoffs.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar
este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect the weather to be hot and
sunny with breezy offshores and headhigh waves. This week will be
less crowded here as the good folks from other parts of the country
go home.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
middle of the day this week but Playa Negra has been working pretty
good at low tide. Just a little rocky though.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Now is the

** From Coconut Harry's Surf Shop in Playa Nosara -

It's Coconut Harry here in Nosara (Playa Guiones). Some BIG waves
coming in - way overhead on the set waves and some power with them
as well - faster breaking waves showing. Wind has cooperated and not
much of a factor. Feliz Ano Nuevo! Coconut Harry
