CR Surf Report for 9-10-06

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 8, Issue 348
September 10th, 2006

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Two huge systems in the south Pacific will crank out plenty of overhead to 2 foot overhead waves all week on south facing beaches. Then Saturday calls for more frequent big sets, in the 2-3 foot overhead range with a 10 second period through next Tuesday. Point breaks and dawn patrols are the call to smooth out the chop.

Caribbean - Small surf Monday, knee to waist with a 10 second period and nothing bigger showing all week. Maybe a freak chest high set Thursday, but that's it, shorter period waves and no swell until at least next Sunday.

Low Tide - (-1.15) feet at 10:25 a.m.
High Tide - 9.99 feet at 4:37 p.m.
Full Moon - 9/7

Concerns Grow As Coast Crime Turns Violent - By Ralph Nicholson of The Beach Times

Help save the Golfo Dulce from a giant Tuna Farm approved to be built near Punta Banco. A letter from Tiskita Foundation asks for assistance.

They'll Surf Against Tuna
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

** Those who opposed an undersea tuna farm in the Golfo Dulce plan a surf championship Saturday near the community of Pavones in southwest Costa Rica.

The environmental groups sponsoring the event oppose the project proposed by Granja Atunera de Golfito S.A. and have appealed permits to the Sala IV constitutional court.

The opponents object to the mess that would be created by raising yellowfin tuna in two-kilometer-long cages beneath the pristine gulf. **

The Latin American Tour will be stopping in Playa Hermosa on November 10-12th, with $15,000 in prizes.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 9/9 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: After three or four days of great mid day, head high, surf, the light afternoon on shores turned on us and blew out the perfect swell to make it barely rideable on Thursday and Friday.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): High tide will start to work on Sunday at daybreak and could be good if the surface conditions continue to stay smooth and the swell doesn't jump too much more.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are peaks all up and down the beach with the main peak just to the south of the hotel continueing to be the most consistent.

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been in the head high range all week. The weather is sunny in the mornings with clouds and some rain in the afternoons with fun evening glass offs.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect more of the same as a steady stream of storms in the underworld the past week is sending us headhigh to overhead waves from a perfect direction for Playa Negra. That should stay with us for the next week. We are getting into the heavy part of the rainy season now so we may have a little more upper level moisture than we have been getting lately.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We have high tides running through the mornings this upcoming week so Playa Negra will be the spot. The crowds are gone so plan on being lonely out there.

** From Nathon at Nathon's Place in Jaco -

Area wave heights and conditions are 5-7 1/2 Ft. a bit rough, murky water with debris in the water with mainly closeouts from most of the beach with rights and lefts forming mainly in the rip current in Jaco'. Hermosa beach 5-10 Ft. waves, less murky but still dark from the sand, Very rough water, choppy also. I went out there the other day and spent like 10 - 15 min trying to get past the brake. It was pushing so hard that three full sets came through before I made it past the break again. There are some trees that washed up on shore so that only means there's still some debris out in the water. Along with both spots you will occasionally run into some jellyfish but it aint bad. Herradura Bay a la punta it's 5-9 Ft. waves all lefts with some close outs as usual and pretty non-murky waves.
