Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 5, Issue 161
August 23rd, 2002

Brought to you each Monday evening (after American airlines
lost my luggage and I had to wait in San Jose too long) by
local surf businesses throughout Costa Rica. See
http://www.crsurf.com/links.html for pics., forecast links,
and tide charts.

Have a question? We have answers! Send a note to
info@crsurf.com before your next trip to get the low down
on waves, boards, and places to stay.

Send me a note if you are interested in working on a Costa
Rican chapter of the Surfrider Foundation - Protecting the
World's Oceans, Waves, and Beaches. Next meeting in
Dominical - October 8th, 7p.m., at the panaderia!

TIDES *for Friday - add 50 min. each day after

High Tide - 9.37 ft. at 7:18 AM
Low Tide - .30 ft. at 1:33 PM

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Consistent surf in the headhead to overhead range
for the week, waves one to two feet smaller up north of
Nosara. Surf will slowly pick up from the SSW and by
Thursday a few 2 foot overhead sets show up. Bigger sets
become more consistent Friday and for the weekend, we'll
see 1 to 3 foot overhead sets from the south. Lots of rain
in the forecast. Next week, surf drops off a little but
there's some leftover juice from another SWer going around
the NZ horn.

Caribbean - The remnents of a tropical systems pushes in
some nice waist to chest high waves, lasting until Tuesday,
then prepare for another flat spell.

AREA REPORTS

NICOYA (N)

** From Diana at Robert August Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones:

The south swell accompanied by a south wind gave us a week
of huge messy waves. Langosta reportedly had the best
morning surf at Sapos with waves well overhead and fairly
clean until the winds picked up. Capitan Suizo was the
break of choice at chest to shoulder high with the south
wind being off-shore. The swell is diminishing as the week
progresses.
off-shore. El swell se disminuye mientras la semana
progresa.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a

North winds are predicted for this weekend, which are
better than south winds for most of Tamarindo. The swell
passes and leaves us with our typical waist to chest surf
which will be better the earlier you get to it.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor

Playa Grande should be really great in the early mornings
with the incoming tide and the left-over of the swell. In
Tamarindo, the rivermouth should be good near mid-tide and
the Langosta rivermouth near low tide. Playa Grande sera
baja.

* From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y
condiciones:

We have been enjoying constant swell between overhead and a
half and double over head for over a week now. Different
spots have been ridable at various tides and wind
conditions. The early morning sessions have been productive
the last few mornings. With no real off shores, patience is
the key with an occassional perfect glassy wave.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a

The size is right for the main peak over the weekend with
early morning tides.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor

Out front if it's not too messy and Tamarindo and points
south if it is.

* From Steve at Tropico Latino Lodge in Santa Teresa (Mal
Pais)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS & CONDITIONS:

Swell has now dropped after the excitement of the weekend.
It's shoulder high out front this morning, clean but a
little disorganised. Weather is perfect - sunny days and
downpours at night.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND:

More swell. Should be around 5' for the weekend.

BEST PLACE TO SURF IN YOUR AREA:

Providing it stays clean, Playa Carmen should be good in
the morning around high tide.
