CR Surf Report for 7-28-07

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 9, Issue 392
July 28th, 2007

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Surf stays chest to head high for Sunday and Monday, with a few overhead sets at the best breaks. Tuesday morning a weak SW pushes the surf up to consistent head high conditions, but doesn't last past Thursday. More chest to head fun conditions for the Friday and the weekend, and continuing all through next week. A long range SSW swell will push in a few 1-2 foot overhead sets the following weekend, so watch for it.

Caribbean - Waves are waist to chest high for the rest of the weekend. On Monday a ENE swell pumps head high waves to the reefs, and maxes out on Tuesday with some overhead sets. By Wednesday it drops a foot, back to chest high, but a stormy Caribbean Sea will send a freak overhead set through each hour. It stays around chest high for the rest of the week and into next weekend.

AREA REPORTS

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Playa Grande is tricky right now as the high tides are moving into the afternoon. After a week of great waves in the just overhead range, yesterday was, at best, poor. We will be looking for afternoon thunder storms to glass it off. Use caution with the lightning - two trees were struck and killed at the hotel last week with people surfing 200 yards away.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Not much unless there are afternoon glass offs.

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (7/27):

Today, is graduation day for our surf school. So, we have taken all our students to Avellanas for a surf safari in search of good waves. The surf, out in front our hotel, was waist to chest high and the ocean surface had a bit of a bump, which is making for poor conditions this morning, which should clean up this afternoon.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (7/27)

Playa Negra has been good the past couple days. Head high to a couple feet overhead with good shape through the morning high tides. Water temp is hovering in the mid 80s. Beautiful sunny skies in the mornings with light offshores until about noon when it switches to fairly strong onshores. It is still raining almost every afternoon. The next couple days will see a decrease in the swell. It will stay in the head high range through this weekend and then pick back up the beginning of next week as a new SW swell moves in from a storm off New Zealand.

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (7/28)

Surf this morning is in the chest high range, as it has dropped a bit more in the last day, but the form is better than yesterday. It is a bit punchy with a low tide coming up at 730AM. This place cracks me up sometimes, there are only 2 people in the water right now, and they are dropping in on each other... Come on folks...

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: 3-4 ft with bigger sets but a bit stormy, had a crazy storm go thru here last nite , saw a couple of tourist building an ARK ¡ Weather in general has been beautiful just a heavy shower here and there and at any time. CR Surf Report for 7-15-07

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 9, Issue 390
July 15th, 2007

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Sunday - Waves are still overhead from the SSW, unless you are north of Mal Pais, where it's headhigh. Nosara to Grande is chest to head and fun. Monday - Expect waves to drop to chest high throughout the day in the small spots, but plenty of head high + peaks come in if you travel south. Tuesday to Thursday - small surf, stomach to chest high with only headhigh sets down south of Jaco. Friday afternoon, the first overhead sets of a SSW kick in with a 11 second period. By Saturday afternoon it's a foot overhead, and Sunday it's 2 foot overhead and firing at those left points. This swell lasts through next Wednesday morning.

Caribbean - Sunday afternoon surf is head high to overhead, lots of sets. By Monday the sets subside, leaving head high peaks and on Tuesday it drops another foot. Wednesday's leftovers are waist high with a rare bigger set. Thursday shows another ENE pulse with waves head high from sets coming every half hour. And on Friday there are still plenty of chest high waves to share. The ENE swell fades quickly so it looks to be small for the weekend.

AREA REPORTS

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waves this week in Tamarindo have been mostly chest high at high tide. A really heavy rain this morning has got the chocolate milk look going out there. You have to see it to believe it: the estuary has turned around and now curves toward the Tamarindo side, bringing the rivermouth out in front of Witch's Rock Surf Camp! Haven't seen that in 10 years.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect to get a mouthful of mud if you go in that water today! It will clean up eventually, but probably will take a day or two. Wave size is diminishing through the weekend. But you have to go check out how that rain blew out the beach by El Pescador. They say it used to be an estuary and today it is again!

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Hunt for clean water. There should be some at Playa Grande and Avellanas. Busque el agua limpia. Debe ser limpia en Playa Grande y Avellanas.

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (7/12):

The waves have been good at the rivermouth all week. On Tuesday, we had head high dredging barrels as the tide started to drop. The current was brutal, but caused the wave to almost move in slow motion as the double up barrel started to form. Today, the waves are a bit smaller, about chest to shoulder high with offshore winds grooming some nice peaks. The right and left is working at the rivermouth. Expect it to remain surfable most of the day with these conditions.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - (7/14)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We're enjoying great surf in the head high to half overhead range in spite of the afternoon high tides.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Look for afternoon glass offs with the rain storms. Conditions improve next week when the high tides move into the morning window.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Look for tides and peaks along the north end of the bay with little or no backwash.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (7/14)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been waist to chest high with the occasional headhigh set. The weather has been raining one day and sunny the next. We should be getting into our little summer soon. A break from the wet weather will be a welcome time.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Wet weather is in store for the next few days with the surf too south for Playa Negra. It will stay small for the next few days.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Avellanas could be the call for the next few days. Break out the longboards.

Surf this morning is in the chest high range, and it looked pretty fun. I am having a hard time getting motivated as we just ended a month of great surf, but it is still real good if you are on your way from FL. Doesn't look like much headed our way in the next few days. We just passed a low tide around 9AM.

AREA REPORTS

** From Blue Trailz Surf Tours in Tamarindo (7/6) -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Nice shoulder to head high sets breaking in the bay of Tamarindo , South end of Grande has some very good waves and Langosta has been working well in the past few days

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas):Head high surf on south fasing beaches

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Avellanas will be good in the next few days North end of Grande and Langosta shoot have decent size surf

** From Colin at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

The surf today was a bit smaller, but still some fun shoulder high sets came through the rivermouth in Tamarindo. The winds were lightly offshore most of the day and the high tide this evening had some glassy waves peeling over the rivermouth sandbars.

It looks like we have more waves on tap for the rest of next week. That makes me happy. Hopefully, you have made plans to come down here soon as the surf season is in full swing. If you want to catch really fun waves this is the time of year. The most exposed spots rarely go less than head high at this time of year. I look forward to seeing you soon.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande - (7/7)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We've been enjoying great overhead morning surf with stiff off shores. The crowds at times around the main peak are overwhelming, however the sessions have been long and most of the surfers are having a great time. This swell is a little raw and the ones that work well are hard to pick.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): With morning tides, there should be some great surf for several days as long as the wind cooperates.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The focus is on the main peak to the south of the hotel, but there are great waves everywhere along the north end of the bay.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (7/9)

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf at Playa Negra has been real fun with head high sets and glassy conditions. Water temp is hovering in the high 80s. Sunny skies in the mornings and rainy afternoons. Look for more of the same as the swell turns more South with some SW wind swell mixed in to give it good shape. We have high tide running through the late mornings this upcoming week so look for Negra to be good to very good as the tide comes up.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: You can see just how flat Playa Negra is right now. www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com .

** From Steve at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones (7/7)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves in Playa Guiones have been consistent all week with head high to overhead sets. The crowds have been moderate and the vibe is always friendly here. The surf has been good mid morning and afternoons due to the tides. With some fast tubes on the lower tides.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): This weekend waves are expected to weaken to chest to head high. Early morning should be your best bet with the in coming tide. Also, check back as the tide goes out. There's been some power and fast rides during lower tides.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Guiones should catch most of the current swell the best.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: There is a save the Howler Monkey fundraiser concert on July 27th at the Harbor Reef in Playa Guiones at 7 p.m. They are bringing in some rock and blues musicians from the states to rock out the house. It's $50 per person and it includes dinner. The money goes towards updating the transformers and electric cables to make them monkey friendly. The area lost 8 monkeys just last month to electricution. It's an ugly sight to see a monkey burned like that. To buy tickets call (506) 682-1010 and ask for Brenda.

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (7/8)

Buenos, I expected the surf to be smaller today as we are waiting for new swell to arrive, and my first 4 minutes on the beach I didn't see anything fun roll through... then a 7 waves set macked through peaking at the palm tree, and rolling to the rancho. None of the waves closed out... and no one was on it, one guy caught one way, way out on the shoulder, but the best sections were already over. That set was a bit overhead. If you want some of those you better get on it quick because with the rising tide it won't last too long. On the forecast, we are looking at some good waves for the next few days, and offshores are forecast in the mix! Good tides... I might be rescheduling some appointments tomorrow... Last night we had some killer little lines rolling through. Like a little skate park, and all the local groms were getting it done, tails flying, airs boosting, and a little barrel from time to time.

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical (7/6)-

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Waves are shoulder to just over head high. Nice form even if a little closed out. The main swell appears from the west and so the current is pushing toward the cell tower/Roca Verde and the wave yields more rights than lefts.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): The weekend looks to be about the same or maybe a bit smaller. However, a nice looking storm is brewing off Ecuador and Columbia and should send us a gift during the week next week.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Anywhere along the beach at Dominical.
