NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - All the models show different predictions, so this is how it's going to go down. The week starts with a dropping swell up north, down to chest high with a rare head high set with the rising tide. Down south, it stays a foot overhead. By Wednesday, the waves pick up a foot, and by Thursday the coast is lashed by a near shore system pushing in two foot overhead surf. By Friday we'll know if it's tropical and how heavy the swell will be. Could be big and stormy, but at least it will be big for the weekend 1-3 foot overhead. By Sunday night the storm will have passed north, leaving overhead conditions from a long range southwest swell filing across the Pacific. This swell sticks around for the following week, nothing huge, but lots of waves.

Caribbean - The wave tap has turned off for the month, leaving only waist high leftovers for the week. Nothing bigger, only smaller on Thursday and Friday. Slight chance for a NE swell next week, and watch out on the Pacific for hurricane formation to avoid heavy rains and flooding.

TIDES for 5/20/07 (add ~50 min. each day)

High Tide - 8.77 feet at 6:07 a.m.
Low Tide - .76 feet at 12:07 p.m.

Full Moon - 5/31

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 5/19 or posted)

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

Well, the surf has been anything but big but its been really fun. Yesterday (Thursday) was basically the same as Wednesday, and its looking like today is going to be the same, perhaps a little bit bigger as out in front of the camp there are some bigger sets coming in, and its still low tide. High tide is in the afternoon, and there hasn't been too much wind. Its definitely longboard time but the waves are open and there are 15-20 second rides, so lots of nose rides! Grab your big board and surf the rivermouth as there have been plenty of waves with not many people out, believe it or not. See you in the water- joe

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been head high and different every morning. This morning was classy and fun until mid day when it came onshore. Sunny skies with those big puffy clouds floating around up there. Some rain showers later in the day.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Look for an increase in surf for in the next few days with headhigh to well overhead at the right tide. We are in that early rainy season mode. Maybe some rain in the afternoons and early evenings.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The tide is really high early in the mornings all this week. Check out Playa Negra early and Avellanas midday.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: See the surf today at Playa Negra. www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com .

** From Steve at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: 2-3 ft waist to chest high clean and fun.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The weather is cloudy and rainy. The wave forecast shows bigger waves from a SSW swell but we have not seen them yet. Waves today are still pequenas.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Guiones is your best bet.

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (5/20)

Guiones was super fun this morning, but you just had to wait a long time for the waves... this swell is from the far south, so I dont think too much of it is getting in to the bay here. When the waves did come through it was about head high, maybe a bigger peak or so, and it got fun and hollow with the low tide... Pics were taken very early about 7, which is what I am trying to do now (so it gets done), and you can tell that the tide was still high, and the waves were somewhat mushy...

** From Sunrise at the Samara Surf School -

Surfs up! Make it your way to playa Samara and come surfing with us. Enjoy the rain, glassy sessions for the evening.. Come one, come all.. Pura vida and Happy May...

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Bueno , 3/5 ft at Hermosa and 2/4 ft out front , fun clean if a bit stormy out front , a bit of red tide comes and gos but no worries its real patchy so you can always find a clean section. I hear its really bad in other areas , maybe you should let us know ! Need a new board ? Check out www.surfindustries.com and after you see what you want go to the dealer locator to find an easy way to get one ! Pure Surf Distribution S.A. along with a few quality oriented shops will be making it so much easier to get a great new board ! If you own a shop here or in Nicaragua get in touch with us at chucks@... for some info on how to become part of this network ! Congratulations Carlos and Julia at the new to open store June 1st - BLOWFISH Surf Shop in Dominical where you will now be able to find everything you need for your adventure in the "SOUTHERN ZONE", see over 30 new boards there at opening day !

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: The swell has grown a little bit, but we are still seeing head high or less at the beach. The point hasn't worked in weeks. However, the waves have nice form at mid-tide. A bit mushy at high tide.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Looks like a good swell is coming in on Monday or Tuesday. It looks especially good because the waves are coming from several different sources which lends to peakier conditions.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Right now the beaches are the only place. Because of the rain, the river mouth at Dominical is dirty. Going in by the lifeguard tower is usually a bit more enjoyable (but sometimes more crowded). However, this swell looks like it will light up "the point" and every other good break that holds a bigger wave. Expect overhead waves!

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 5/12 or posted)

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -(5/10)

The swell has finally dropped. Since we've had early morning and late afternoon high tides, the beach breaks have been best with waist to chest high surf at best. Yesterday (Wednesday) the swell picked up slightly but today its back down again. The wind has been nice in the mornings, even blowing offshore and opening up clean little barrels. Marbella through Negra has seen the most swell. Tamarindo has been pretty small but still fun. The forecast for the next few days is that the surf stays exactly the same size, so early morning and late afternoon surf sessions will be best until the offshore winds start picking up again. aloha..

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been in the fun head high range for the last couple days. Glassy sunny mornings with onshore winds coming up early. High clouds in the afternoons with rain showers in the early evenings.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect more of the same. Fun head high surf with glassy conditions.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: It will be medium tide going high for these next few mornings so that will be the best time for Playa Negra. Get there early and beat the crowd and onshore wind.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Check out the surf at Playa Negra today. www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (5/13)

Small fun surf this morning... waves in the waist to chest range with some fun sets pushing through, clean conditions...

Gabe Kling surfs against Kelly Slater in the Billabong Chopes contest today... Go Gabe!!!

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: The waves are small but peaky...shoulder to head high. To small for high tide but they seem to be working at mid-tide. I've not been out in about 5 days but it looks like fun from the beach. There is rumor of a red tide, I was feeling sick, so I've stayed out of the water. I'm not sure how to know if a red tide is happening or not so I can't really confirm this.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): It might get a bump on Sunday but it looks pretty much like the same waves for a week or so.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Anyplace but the point should be working. I'm not sure how big a red tide is and how far you have to travel to avoid it.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Surf headhigh to overhead at the best spots up north, and a foot bigger farther south. Swell from the SSW fades on Tuesday, waves down to chest high in the Guanacaste area. Wednesday and Thursday have some overhead surf from the Southern Pacific from a short period swell, but doesn't last to the weekend. More chest to head high surf with an occasional overhead set with the tidal push. Smaller up north. The next BIG swell won't arrive until the 20th, so get your work done now.

Caribbean - Dropping swell - down from chest high Monday morning to waist high by the evening. Stays waist high all week, with a rare bigger set in the hours just before high tide. Weak swell to push in Thursday evening, but only bringing a few more chest high sets.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 5/5 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Sloppy, fairly large, surf.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): We will need some rain and off shores in the afternoon to straighten this up. The early morning high tides starting on Monday look promising for over head conditions and maybe a smooth ocean.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Anywhere on the north end of the bay.

** From Joe at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

With my crappy dial up internet I log in and give you all this report. In a nutshell, there is still a ton of swell. You'll find very fun waves at Playa Grande, Casitas, Tamarindo, Langosta, Avellanas, Negra, Junquial, and Marbella. Thats a lot of options, so hopefully you're reading this and setting your alarm clock instead of raging at the Mambo Bar or whatever.

Saturday Cinco de May was the peak of the swell. Little Hawaii was a spot to be, just ask Matt the restaurant manager who was getting shacked there all morning before huevos rancheros at mono congo. I surfed the Rivermouth here in Avellanas and it sucked, so don't bother surfing it during this swell. Its too west. Or north. Or south. Whatever, it sucked. In the afternoon I surfed the reefs in front of the parking lot and it was fun, but not epic.

Sunday, I surfed Negra in the pm. It was fun, still plenty of size with the head high set coming in very often. The wind hasn't been laying down much so theres a bit of chop until the last hour of light.

Monday, I'm expecting the surf to be about the same size. You'll find waves everywhere you go, so if you get on it early and start at Grande and work your way south, you'll score some waves somewhere (probably Grande). If you're surfing down south I'll see you there. Get out early before the wind kills it.

** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Playa Negra had some fun headhigh waves with light onshores all day. With only a few people around under partly cloudy skies, the locals got it all today. Look for bigger surf this weekend as a new SW pushes in with well overhead waves with good to great shape. Glassy or light offshores in the mornings and onshore in the afternoons with a chance of some rain later in the day.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:
Killer surfing photos of Playa Negra at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Steve at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waves have been fun all week. Chest to overhead on the sets with some power. Some really good late morning early afternoon sessions. Sometimes a little onshore wind is not such a bad thing especially for the late sleepers or people that have jobs...Waves now are 3-5 ft with power but a little sloppy with all the storms we've had the past couple of days. There are quite a few close-outs but the occasional nice set will come in and hold the section.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): We're expecting 3-5 ft for the weekend and decreasing some during the week. Hopefully the swell will clean up a bit on the way down.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: I've heard some great things about Camaronal the last week. I sent some clients on a surf/fish trip there on Tuesday and they caught 6-8 ft clean waves with power and tubes. They also caught 4 fish on the way back including a nice yellowtail and a 50lb Rooster. Not a bad trip. Needless to say they were pretty stoked when they got back. Too bad I did not go with them..

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:
We've had lights the past couple of nights. I hear with the increase in rain we've had the power situation is looking better. I just wish Direct T.V. had the NBA playoffs so I coould make good use of the electricity.. Adios for now..

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: SOME FUN IF INTERESTING WAVES TONITE HERE, AROUND 4-6 FT FACES WITH A BIG ONE HERE AND THERE , A BIT CLOSED OUT BUT GOT A COUPLE OF DECENT WAVES OUT THERE ! Rains stayed in the mountains so we missed out on offshores but I think tomorrow will be the session ! See Ya there !

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Incredibly nice waves!!! They are almost all head high to slightly overhead with occasional head-and-a-half slammers coming through. Very peaky form creating lots of shoulders. Often two waves from two angles collide giving either a perfect peak (if convex) or one of those traps that send a tunnel from the wrong direction right at your ride (if concave). In any case, I've been doubling up on my sessions. I can't get enough of it.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Looks like the size should hold through Sunday/Monday and we should be down to a smaller wave by Tuesday. The tide is perfect for double sessions!

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach is working for strong surfers but is a bit much for occasional/beginner surfers. The point is working but just barely. Only the big sets break on the boil and these sets are only coming in every 15 minutes or so. I would think Hermosa would be a good choice for an easier ride than the beach but I haven't been there to check it out.
