TOP NEWS

50 percent less leatherback nests, by The Beach Times

The last nesting season of leatherback turtles at the Las Baulas National Marine Park in Guanacaste, on the Costa Rican northwestern Pacific, is a source of worry for environmental authorities and organizations, since the number of arrivals decreased by 50 percent, as compared to the preceding season. Wardens counted only 58 individuals of the endangered species, while in the preceding season there had been 124 sightings. The worries can be fully understood when one takes into account that this is the most important leatherback spawning site in the Eastern Pacific and the fourth worldwide.

To protest the 14 story condo project on Playa Hermosa Beach - Dave Sherwood from the Tico Times investigates both sides of the issue.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Monday morning surf will be chest high with a rare head high set. Tuesday, the head high sets are more consistent, and an hourly overhead set arrives from the NW. Wednesday through Saturday are more of the same, chest to head high, with occasionally a bigger set. By Sunday evening the first '07 southwest swell arrives with 2 foot overhead waves, staying big through next Wednesday.

Caribbean - Surf stays a foot overhead Monday and Tuesday morning, before dropping to overhead by the end of day. Wednesday and Thursday stay head high with a number of bigger sets each hour, and Friday shows more ESE swell filling in up to 2 foot overhead. The swell combo's with another from the NE, giving the right coast very consistent surf, lots of closeouts, so head to the reefs this weekend. More swell on tap for all next week, too.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo - (3/2)

Yesterday we took a trip to marbella and had great waves. this report is a day late because i was so wiped out from swimming all day that I fell asleep before getting to post the photos. the waves were mostly chest to head high, and hollow. The first 2 photos are from that day.

Today, the surf school took a trip to la finca. It was about the same size as yesterday, but the wind was onshore today, so the conditions weren't as nice. there were still some fun waves though.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones -

Shoulder to head high set waves - wind is offshore today, at least now at 11:30am on Saturday.
