CR Surf Report for 6-26-06

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 8, Issue 339
June 26th, 2006

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Headhigh to overhead surf for Monday and Tuesday from the South with infrequent sets. Surf fades a foot on Wednesday and another Thursday, down to chest high at most beachbreaks. (still a couple of overhead sets coming through each hour, but it's a long wait) Friday is when the first overhead sets of another SSW swell arrive, but they don't show until the rising tide in the afternoon. Saturday the surf will pick up in the Guanacaste region up to overhead, and on Sunday the rest of the coast will see surf in the 1-2 foot overhead range, which lasts through Monday.

Caribbean - Waist high surf with chest high sets coming every 40 minutes on Monday, increasing a foot on Tuesday. On Wednesday a ENE swell pushes in overhead surf to the beachbreaks and bigger sets on the reefs. Swell sticks around on Thursday with more overhead surf and only by Friday drops a foot to head high waves. Saturday and Sunday will be smaller, back to waist to chest high.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 6/24)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: With a really fun swell having faded away, we're back to Tamarindo's characteristic waist-to-chest surf when the tide comes in. Winds held off shore for a few days earlier in the week, but seem to have passed with the swell. Con el buen swell ya pasado, tenemos otra ves las olas normales de a la cintura de al pecho cuando la marea esta llena. El viento se mantuvo off-shore varios dias de esta semana per esta fortuna parece haber pasado con el swell.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The surf is predicted to continue dropping slowly through next week. The weekend tides are in the early afternoon, so expect fun surf in Tamarindo in the late mornings through mid afternoon. Se pronistican que las olas vendran cada vez mas pequeno durante la semana. Las mareas altas del fin de semana son despues del mediodia, asi que habra buen surf en Tamarindo desde la manana hasta en la tarde.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area:Playa Grande is woth the trip right now inspite of the roads. In Tamarindo, keep an eye on Pico Grande at the mid tide. Ir a Playa Grande vale la pena en este momento a pesar de los caminos. En Tamarindo, este pendiente de Pico Grande a la media marea.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The tides have moved into the afternoon now, but the wind is light and thbe head high surf is fun.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas):More of the same as we gradually move into the off shores of little summer.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones:

Smaller, head-high set waves. Decent shape with rising tide in the mornings the best time. Winds off shore until late morning - rain squalls glass off late afternoons.

** From Jesse at Samara Surf School -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Some nice long lines at high tide, about shoulder high, great if you know what you're doing. Great whitewater and inside waves for beginner and intermediate surfers, when the tide go's back down. Stop by and check it out.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell should pickup throughout the weekend, winds are light and variable.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The best surfing spot in Samara is right in front of the Las Brisas Del Pacifico hotel. No crowds or localism, with the waves breaking a little farther off shore.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Samara has waves for surfers of all levels. Excellent for begginer and intermediate surfers. If you've ever had the urge to learn surfing, stop on by, always perfect conditions for learning.

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Surf was fun toady at the solstice _expression session at Playa Hermosa today and Jaco has been good for the Tico Travel PRO-AM as well 3-5 ft faces here and Hermosa a bit bigger with good form and great surfing all over ¡ Winda are light and weahter is okay a bit cloudy but less U.V. to worry you ! ** From Tule at Manuel Antonio Surf School -

Swell begins tomorrow, with the waves in the Manuel Antonio area on Monday and Tuesday to be about 3-4 feet en Playitas and about 1-2 feet en Manuel Antonio, in front of Marlin Restaurant; less current this swell. The days will be sunny and after 2 pm seasonal rains and some off-shore wind in the afternoon are probably to expect. The best spots in the area to surf will be at Playitas and Playa del Rey, with a smaller but great wave en La Boca en Quepos on Monday and Tuesday. Buena suerte con el swell que viene!

** From Brice at Land Assurance Reforestation Service in Dominical:

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 6/17)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Great waves and conditions (some light off shores in the morning and occassionally in the afternoon) this week from head high sets to a little
larger.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Looks interesting - look out for the freak
huge sets. The weather is definitely trying to clear.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Around the front of the hotel has been
working in the morning and afternoon when the wind cooperates.

** From Stephen at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

Waves have been pretty consistent the past few days, coming in about chest high and pretty regular sets. This morning gave up some fun waves down in Langosta, got some good reports from tours in Marbella and Grande as well. This afternoon should give us a decent waist/chest high swell, mild off-shore winds. Tamarindo is pretty slow right now, not all that many people on the streets or in the water which has been making for fun morning sessions. The next few days will see the morning sessions getting a bit later, works ok for playing hookie from work before lunch though...

** From John Lyman, photographer in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The last few mornings have seen bright sunshine with wispy offshores and a good swell at head high to a few feet overhead. It sure does get good when the swell direction is 220. Loud afternoon thundershowers but glassy tubes for the not too faint of heart.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The surf is strong with well overhead waves. A bit of a wait in between the sets. Hopefully we will retain these great sunny mornings for the rest of the rainy season. Reports of a big swell for Sunday and Monday. At 195 it might be a little too south for Playa Negra. It might be good at Avellanas or Little Hawaii for those big south swells.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Check out the latest fun stuff at http://tamarindobeach.net/photos_lyman/index.html

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones:

Headhigh waves expected to build through the weekend. Glassy conditions in the mornings and following the inevitable rain spells. Coconut Harry - www.coconutharrys.com

** From Jesse at Samara Surf School -

Some surf, lots of chop, some glass. The swell is waivering, 3 to 5 foot waves. Swell expected to rise for new moon. Pura vida - www.samarasurfschool.com

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Yep here it does , contests back to back right thru July and looks like swells back to bacvk right thru July ¡ Waves have been super fun in our area and I only see that improving from here on out for a while , Its big out front, overhead and pretty walled up but a sneaker 2 came thru this a.m. with nice barrels to be had and escapable ones as well . Its going to get bigger so prep your quiver and head for the points its going to be too big and too straight for the beachbreaks in my area . Head for those never break spots for this one and get em as good as they get ! Pura Vida, Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF!

** From Tule at Manuel Antonio Surf School -

For Sunday the waves in the Manuel Antonio/Quepos area will be about 5-6 feet en Playitas and 3-4 feet en Manuel Antonio, in front of Marlin Restaurant--sea, glassy. The best conditions will be found en Playitas, en front of Mar y Sombra Restaurant, and en la Boca de Quepos. La Boca will be smaller than Playitas, but will be a better wave. The days will be sunny and after 2 to 3 pm rains.

** From Brice at Land Assurance Reforestation Service in Dominical:

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: The first feathers of the on-coming event have just arrived this morning. A couple of double overheads, a set of overheads every 10 minutes or so, and the shoulder high stuff coming in the mean time. Nice form!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Get your guns out for Sunday and all day Monday and Tuesday.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Through Saturday, the beach should be working at mid to high tides. As of Sunday, it'll probably be too big for the beach and most surfers will be heading off to points and smaller breaks.

** From Cashew Hill Jungle Lodge in Puerto Viejo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS – waist high
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - the waves started coming up yesterday and are still growing
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA – Playa Grande, Punta Uva

Double overhead swell maxes next Tuesday and stays gigantic through next Thursday.

Caribbean - Tuesday's waist high surf picks up a foot Wednesday from the ENE swell in the Caribbean Sea and by midday will see some head high waves. AREA REPORTS (sent in on 6/10)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The smooth, but tricky, large surf at the beginning of the week has turned on shore and bumpy.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The well overhead swell seems to be calming
down and I saw a few good rides on Sat.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: If it stays large, try the left off the rock pile directly in front of the hotel, otherwise look for the cleanest break.

** From Stephen at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (6-13) -

Tides are a bit frustrating right now, waves are either predawn or early afternoon, but at least there's some swell! Half tide right now and rising, looking at 2-3 foot rollers crumbling in in about chest deep water. Looks to be shoulder high on the sets, thanks by the guy who just ate it so I had a reference! Should grow a bit over the next couple hours, maybe even hold this swell until tides give us double session days again! South America is about to catch a really big swell this week, keep checking it out on-line, you may see the next Miercoles Grande pretty soon!

** From John Lyman, photographer in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The last few days have seen onshore stormy condidtions with surf in the headhigh to a couple feet overhead range. Overcast rainy skies are the norm for this time of year.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Playa Negra will be about the same as the June gloom continues with onshores and intermittent rain. By mid week the surf will be smaller but the weather should start to clear up and we may just get some sunny fun days by Thursday or Friday.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: It's a full moom low tide in the mornings all this upcoming week so Playa Negra might be a little sketchy until the water fills in over all those rocks. Check out the Avellanas rivermouth in the early am and if the wind holds down, Negra for the higher tides in the afternoons.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Congrats to Greg and his lovely new bride. Hey Greg, post some pics. Check out John Lyman Photos at http://tamarindobeach.net/photos_lyman/index.html

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones:

** From Jesse at Samara Surf School -

not much surf to report in Playa Samara. Lots and lots of rain! The big swells of last week have passed us by, tiny waves rolling in. Great for beginner and intermediate levels. Come on over and visit us. Pura vida- www.samarasurfschool.com

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Well its a let down from last weeks great surf but shoulder high and clean is the Word of the day in Jaco . Weather is partly cloudy and no wind at 10 a.m. so surfing is nice at the moment !We received a batch of offprice 2004 and 2005 boards from a secret stash in -------- and we have some great short boards and funshapes starting brand new at 395$ with F.C.S. fins Havent looked at the surf forecast and since Greg was getting hitched he is late on his synopsis too ! Congratulations on your wedding and I will let all the other girls know they lost out ! Hah Hah ! Pura vida , Chuck and the crew at W.O.W. SURF !

** From Brice at Land Assurance Reforestation Service in Dominical:

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Wow! Great waves but they are too big for the beach. A couple of brave souls were surfing the beach at high tide today, but most surfers have gone to areas that hold a bigger wave better. Punto Dominical is going off well and is not as crowded as I expected it to be. It is working well on the inside and outside points.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): about another 1/4 bigger on Sunday and Monday. I'll say it again...wow!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Unless you are a glutton for punishment, stay away from the beach. The point is the place to surf in Dominical for the next few days.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Big South swell on tap with a mix of SSW in it, too. This means surf in the 1 to 3 foot overhead range, with sets of 10-12 coming every 10-12 minutes. Biggest sets on Monday in the southern beaches, double overhead, and closing out at most beaches. Tuesday through Thursday morning calls for continued overhead to 2+ overhead on the sets, mid morning surf is the call. Then by the afternoon dropping tide the sets back off and by Friday it's down to head high up north and overhead from Mal Pais south, continuing into Saturday. Sunday, the SSW swell is back, 1-2 foot overhead, which continues until next Tuesday. June is looking great!!!

Caribbean - Sunday and Monday there's a slow to fade ESE swell pushing in a few chest high sets with a headhigh wave every couple of hours. Fades down to waist high on Tuesday, knee to waist on Wednesday, and the spicket is off until Saturday, when more weak ESE gives the right coast some more waist high waves.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 6/3)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Although we've had some good sessions this week, the lack of off shores has not let the conditions break through to Playa Grande perfection. There is plenty of swell (too big on Thurs.), but you have to pick them and watch out for the bumps. The back wash was particularly bad at the beginning/middle of the week.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The tides are mellowing and moving into the morning slot, so conditions shouild improve unless it gets too big.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We've been slipping down to the Tamarindo Estuary on the bigger days. It's only 4 minutes on the service road.

** From Stephen at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

Smaller conditions today, tides were high around 8am, so we're looking at a long afternoon of low tide here in Tamarindo today. Winds have been mild and off shore, the rains still haven't kicked off their season (9 weeks until the first Redskins game speaking of kickoff...) so we are still in seasonal transition. You'd be pretty amazed at how green the whole place has gotten in just a few weeks, SO much less dust now. Off for some lunch, when you get here, you gotta go to Pedro's for the best fish tacos in town!

** From John Lyman, photographer in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:
The waves have been head high with bigger sets every 15 minutes. Cloudy skies with rain in the afternoons. The large swell predicted is too south for Playa Negra.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas):
We should see more west but smaller as this swell winds down but look for the surf to jump back up to well overhead on Monday and Tuesday as a new round of southwest makes it way to our coast. June is the wettest month of the year here at Playa Negra so look for rain, mostly in the afternoons.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area:
With the high tide in the mornings all this upcoming week, check out Playa Negra. If it is too big and closed out, go to Avellanas, wait for low tide and surf the rivermouth or Little Hawaii.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones:

Headhigh and bigger set waves rolling in. Clean, offshore winds in the high tide mornings now. Pura Vida, www.coconutharrys.com

** From Jesse at Samara Surf School -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Some good evening sesh's, now 4 to 5 foot waves rolling in. After the rainstorms, the waves turn to glass. Good morning waves for beginners and intermediate surfers.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas):
The swell is backing back down, maybe back to 3 feet. Expecting the next swell with the Full moon.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area:
In front of the Las brisas del pacifico hotel. Offshore and less crowded. No localism.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:

** From Andrea at Waves C.R. Surf School in Playa Hermosa -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Reall big, and heavy, closing out at the beachbreaks....point breaks are peeling though
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Probably more rain and crazy thunder storms, swell should hold for a couple of days.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: head out to the point breaks
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Waves Costa Rica start again with their advance and competitive level trainnings.... Starting this June 3rd in front of our place. ** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Business is great and yes I know you get tired of it but Jaco was the best spot around without a boat and nobody out, peaky bumpy but so much nicer than the other neighborhood beachbreaks. ¡nterval is pretty short and there was a BOOMER here and there but real nice and tomorrow it's going to be fun again! Weather is doing its twist so you got to expect some great stuff in with the not so great stuff too! All around headhigh to well overhead and thick chunky surf is the call for the weekend and next week looks like more of the same! Just got some new boards in and a few off price 2005 and 04 models at almost oldschool prices too! Alls good , peace and love and of course HAPPY SURFING, Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF
