Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 8, Issue 338
June 19th, 2006

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Surf double overhead with bigger sets on Monday and Tuesday morning down south. 2-3 foot overhead on the Central Coast and up around Negra and Grande. Even the sheltered spots see overhead surf both days from the SSW. On Thursday the swell dies quickly, down to 1-2 overhead in the afternoon hours. Friday it drops another two feet, leaving head high surf for the weekend and into next week. Next swell won't arrive until next Friday from the SW so get on it now. *Beware of strong rips!!

Caribbean - Waves from the East file in chest high with some head high sets on Monday and Tuesday morning. By the afternoon it fades and Wednesday the swell drops to waist high. More ESE swell arrives Thursday and keeps waves chest high going into the weekend. Look for bigger sets at the best spots.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 6/17)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Great waves and conditions (some light off shores in the morning and occassionally in the afternoon) this week from head high sets to a little
larger.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Looks interesting - look out for the freak
huge sets. The weather is definitely trying to clear.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Around the front of the hotel has been
working in the morning and afternoon when the wind cooperates.

** From Stephen at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

Waves have been pretty consistent the past few days, coming in about chest high and pretty regular sets. This morning gave up some fun waves down in Langosta, got some good reports from tours in Marbella and Grande as well. This afternoon should give us a decent waist/chest high swell, mild off-shore winds. Tamarindo is pretty slow right now, not all that many people on the streets or in the water which has been making for fun morning sessions. The next few days will see the morning sessions getting a bit later, works ok for playing hookie from work before lunch though...

** From John Lyman, photographer in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The last few mornings have seen bright sunshine with wispy offshores and a good swell at head high to a few feet overhead. It sure does get good when the swell direction is 220. Loud afternoon thundershowers but glassy tubes for the not too faint of heart.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The surf is strong with well overhead waves. A bit of a wait in between the sets. Hopefully we will retain these great sunny mornings for the rest of the rainy season. Reports of a big swell for Sunday and Monday. At 195 it might be a little too south for Playa Negra. It might be good at Avellanas or Little Hawaii for those big south swells.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Check out the latest fun stuff at http://tamarindobeach.net/photos_lyman/index.html

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones:

Headhigh waves expected to build through the weekend. Glassy conditions in the mornings and following the inevitable rain spells. Coconut Harry - www.coconutharrys.com

** From Jesse at Samara Surf School -

Some surf, lots of chop, some glass. The swell is waivering, 3 to 5 foot waves. Swell expected to rise for new moon. Pura vida - www.samarasurfschool.com

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Yep here it does , contests back to back right thru July and looks like swells back to bacvk right thru July ¡ Waves have been super fun in our area and I only see that improving from here on out for a while , Its big out front, overhead and pretty walled up but a sneaker 2 came thru this a.m. with nice barrels to be had and escapable ones as well . Its going to get bigger so prep your quiver and head for the points its going to be too big and too straight for the beachbreaks in my area . Head for those never break spots for this one and get em as good as they get ! Pura Vida, Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF!

** From Tule at Manuel Antonio Surf School -

For Sunday the waves in the Manuel Antonio/Quepos area will be about 5-6 feet en Playitas and 3-4 feet en Manuel Antonio, in front of Marlin Restaurant--sea, glassy. The best conditions will be found en Playitas, en front of Mar y Sombra Restaurant, and en la Boca de Quepos. La Boca will be smaller than Playitas, but will be a better wave. The days will be sunny and after 2 to 3 pm rains.

** From Brice at Land Assurance Reforestation Service in Dominical:

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: The first feathers of the on-coming event have just arrived this morning. A couple of double overheads, a set of overheads every 10 minutes or so, and the shoulder high stuff coming in the mean time. Nice form!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Get your guns out for Sunday and all day Monday and Tuesday.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Through Saturday, the beach should be working at mid to high tides. As of Sunday, it'll probably be too big for the beach and most surfers will be heading off to points and smaller breaks.
