NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Continued small surf on the Pacific, a weak NW swell keeping the Nicoya chest head with a rare head high set, but it fades out to waist to chest by Tuesday at sunset. Then there's four days of waist to chest high surf. No relief until Sunday when a few head high sets appear around dusk, and Monday the surf rebuilds to head high from long period SW and NW swells.

Caribbean - Tuesday morning brings fun chest high surf with an overhead set once every 30 minutes. The next round of ESE swell, overhead with sets 2-3 foot overhead at the best reefs starts Wednesday. Stays the same size Thursday and Friday, not wearing out until Saturday afternoon when the sets disappear. Sunday drops down to head high and stays that way until next Tuesday with another East swell that sends in waves overhead to a foot over.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 2/25)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Just as you predicted - shoulder to head high, perfect, off shore peaks losing some consistency and size toward the end of the week. The water got a little nippy and then warmed up again by mid week. Bring cold water gear if you plan to surf Witches or north of us.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The off shores are holding and the weak high tides are in the morning in case the swell picks up.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are empty peaks everywhere. The main break in front of the hotel is the most consistent.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The off-shore winds are blowing hard now and there's not a cloud in the sky, ever. Waves are small; not much more than waist high and the water is totally clear. Los vientos off-shore ahora estan soplando duro y no hay ni una nube en el cielo. Las olas estan pequenas; no mas de a la cintura y el agua esta totalmente clara.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Catch the incoming tide in the morning with your longboard and spend the afternoon relaxing. Surfea la marea entrante con un lonboard en las mananas y pase la tarde relajandose.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Grande and/or Langosta are picking up the swell a little better than Tamarindo. Playa Grande y/o Langosta estan un poco mejores que Tamarindo.

** From John Lyman Photography in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves at Playa Negra have been on the small side for the last few days. Strong offshore wind has been knocking down what little swell there is. Bright warm and sunny skies.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect fun shoulder high waves for this weekend. Look for an increase in the southwest swell for Monday and Tuesday. Head high plus on the sets. Low tide in the mornings to mid day this week so keep that in mind. The new moon is on Monday and the tides get pretty extreme.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Negra in front of the hotel is always the best bet with an incoming tide and an increasing swell. Look for it to be best Monday and Tuesday.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Check out the John Lyman Photos website - http://tamarindobeach.net/photos_lyman/index.html

** From Coconut Harry's Surf Shop in Playa Nosara -

Small, but fun around the incoming tides - if you aren't on it by 6 - 11am, you missed it.

** From Jesse at Samara Surf School in Playa Samara -

With the new moon being on Monday the waves are thinking about getting bigger, we expect a rise in the waves over the weekend, maybe 4 to 6 feet. Great whitewater for nearly 6 hours of the day, great time for the entire family to come surfing. There has been no wind, completely still mornings, not a cloud in the sky. Best surfing spot right infront of the Las Brisas Del Pacifico hotel. See you in the waves.

** From Brice at Land Assurance Tree Reforestation in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Very small and closed out even at high tide. Head high sets about every 10 minutes are closed out as well.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): No big changes. Doldrums.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The Internet.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 2/18)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Nice overhead swell running with off shores all day for double sessions in the morning and afternoon.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same. Bring your vest, the water is nippy with all the off shores.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Lots of working peaks - take your pick.

** From Stephen at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVES AND CONDITIONS- Looks like 2-4 feet with a NE direction on the Pacific side. Winds are lighter than they have been all week, making conditions a bit friendlier. Waves are fun if a little mushy.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND- Looks like the winds will continue to be a good direction, typical of this time of year. Size seems to be tapering off this week, but the low crowd numbers are a BIG plus before college spring break!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA- With the waning swell size, it may be best to hit the wide beach areas such as Nosara and Avellanas. While the size is down, the frequency of waves and low crowd numbers should make for a fun time.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- March 4 and 5, Playa Nosara, next stop on the Circuito Nacional. Since the competition this year is th e fiercest it's ever been, this is one you don't want to miss!! Pura vida!

** From John Lyman Photography in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las o las y condiciones : The surf has been very small for the last week. The offshore wind has come back very strong and that´s no help with already small waves. Bright sunny skies is the order of the day now.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana ( clima y o las ): We are hoping the southwest swell predicted will show up by this weekend. Could be classic overhead ofshore Negra barrels. Look for some fun headhigh waves by mid week. A bit of North in it will make A frame peaks around here.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEK EN D IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Try Playa Negra with the morning and afternoon high tides this week. Mid days look for Avellanas rivermouth to be the spot with the lower tide.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales : John Lyman Photos is shooting visitors and locals at Playa Negra very morning and afternoon. Come on down and get yourself shot. You can see your photos at the office across the street for The Cafe Playa Negra. Check it out.

** From Coconut Harry's Surf Shop in Playa Nosara -

Consistent chest to head-high set waves and good shape around the high tides. Wind finally abated and we're back to 'normal'. Pura Vida from Coconut Harry

** From Sunshine at Samara Surf School in Playa Samara -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The swell is back! 3 to 5 foot waves rolling in. Best conditions are in between low and high tides, the waves clean up a bit and aren't as full. Easier to catch. Pretty choppy and mushy but great sunset sesh with occasional off shore winds, for perfect wave conditions.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell expected to hold over the weekend, but will back down to the normal smaller sized waves during high tides, and perfect whitewater conditions, perfect for beginners and children during low tides. Lots of waves to catch, good inside break, nice smaller waves, bigger waves only closing out.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The best surfing spot in Samara is right in front of the Las Brisas Del Pacifico hotel. No crowds or localism, with the waves breaking a little farther off shore.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: The conditions in Samara are bigger now, great for intermediate and advanced surfers, so all surfers can come enjoy Samara.!! Also if you've always wanted to learn surfing come on down or over! Always great whitewater for beginner lessons! Pura Vida

** From Brice at Land Assurance Tree Reforestation in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Well, after 3 months of not going in the water because of an injury, I made it out today with fins and a boogie. Very small but nicely formed waves that were very consistent for Dominical. Shoulder high and a little closed out.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The single event giving the consistency today is fading out over the next few days. I imagine we will have very small surf over the weekend.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The beach in Dominical.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 2/11)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been excellent in the shoulder to just overhead range. in spite of the poor sand conditions in front of the hotel. The wind switched Friday to on shore in the early afternoon as the tide changed to go out and surprised everyone as we had been spoiled all week with consistent off shores.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Conditions are great for late morning sessions, but don't trust the wind after mid day.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Tamarind Estero mouth is catching some of this swell, so beginning there at the lower tides is agood way to start the day. Just take the 5 min. service road down to Villa Baula and head back this way as the tide fills in.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo (online surf journal)-

February is a "summer" month in Tamarindo, and what a strange summer we are having! After a lot of great surf and good wind in the beginning of January, the weather seems to have gone haywire. Right now there's a good north swell breaking, but the wind is on-shore. It's been switching on and off shore as if this were April or May and it's been doing this for weeks. The other day it clouded over and rained. RAIN in Tamarindo in February?! It wasn't enough rain to ruin anyone's vacation, but it sure was strange. That's like a snowstorm in May. It can happen, but it sure feels odd when it does. I should mention, by the way, that there IS something positive about the wind switching on-shore every once in a while: the water stays nice and tropical-warm!!

Even though this is generally a time when Tamarindo is crammed with people, this year seems to be an exception in that as well—at least so far. There are tourists here for sure, but the "crowd" isn't here. I don't know whether they've gone to another country or are just spread out all over this one. The result is that you can actually SURF, you can get a table for dinner, the supermarket has food in it!, and rental cars are available. You can also get a surf lesson pretty much whenever you want.

** From Coconut Harry's Surf Shop in Playa Nosara -

Solid chest to head-high set waves. Offshore wind to almost mid-day. Mid-mornings as the tide rises has been the best. Pura Vida from Coconut Harry

** From Sunshine at Samara Surf School -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - the surf in Playa Samara is minimal this week. We are hoping for a swell to hit with the full moon on Sunday. Come visit for beautiful sunsets and gorgeous days. Volunteer at the local turtle sanctuary and after school program. For more information contact us at 656-0055 Pura Vida

** From Chuck at WOW Surf Shop in Playa Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Strange days are upon us , size is there but conditions are wierd at best , low tide dumpers with plenty of juice but almost unmakeable ! X-SPOT is breaking kind of fun for low tide and Jaco had a decent wave at mid day but windy ! Channel Islands are back on line and we have boards so if you want to ride the best come see us , or if you want a great board by other manufacturers we have some of the best shapers in the world in the shop ! ERIC ARAKAWA, CINO MAGALLANES , GLENN PANG ,ERIE PEEPLES,GREG WEBBER , TOMMY MOORE, MIKE DANIELS , and of course AL MERRICK ! No COPIES JUST PROVEN SHAPES and quality that you would expect from a real surf shop ! Come on in let us say hello , Chuck and the crew at W.O.W. surf .

** From Rancho Coral in Esterillos -

Local Climate: Overcast; Air Temp: 94F. Water Temp 87F; Direction & Height: Southwest 6ft., Sea Surface: Glassy, Winds: Offshore 0-5 MPH, Sunrise: 5:03 AM, Sunset: 5:36 PM, Current Condition- It's going off we have size and distance. Long lines off the west reef. The East peak os hollow and thick. The team is in Dominical for the CNS contest this weekend, good luck to our team, Pura Vida!

** From Brice at Land Assurance Tree Reforestation in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The swell report says that they should be small, but they are respectable, head high, hollow, and unfortunately a little closed out.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Looks like they should be even a bit bigger and with an event arriving from the west, the waves may have some peaks and some more run.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Well, there is a contest both Saturday and Sunday so if you are not competing, you will probably want to stick to the river mouth or go down to Playa Hermosa. Not big enough for the point.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Surf contest for Saturday and Sunday in front of Tortilla Flats.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 2/4)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The swell has been running waist to shoulder high with good shape in both the morning and evening up until Weds. when the off shores backed off in the afternoon..
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): We should have decent conditions for small waves, at least with the morning high tides. Don't count on the afternoon session with the fluky wind conditions.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The main focus of this swell is at the main peak just south of the hotel with some excellent sessions earlier in the week at the north end of the bay around chicken head rock.

** John Lyman Photos from Playa Negra at lymanphoto@... -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been very small and gutless the last few days. Strange weather too for this time of year. Black overcase skies with drizzle and onshore wind all day.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Well let´s hope this weird weather turns into sunny skies with offshores like we are suppose to have this time of year. A bump from the southwest will help keep things in the fun range for the middle of this upcoming week and then some healthy peaks by the weekend.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Negra will be the focus of this upcoming bump. Look for the tide to be incoming through the mornings this week. You know what that means for Playa Negra.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: I have 3 of each calendar left. They could be your if you act now. Hurry. Time is running out. E-mail at lymanphoto@...

** From Coconut Harry's Surf Shop in Playa Nosara -

It's waist to chest - occasional bigger peaks sneaking in. Pura Vida from Coconut Harry

** From John at Samara Surf School -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The samara waves are back to their normal size. Some killer 2 to 3 foot waves are rolling in. Perfect for the beginner and intermediate surfers to tune up their skills. The water is warm, so come over for a dip. Believe it or not we've been experiencing afternoon rain showers, , but not too much wind so not a lot of chop.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The next swell expected to hit is around the full moon time, so not too much over the weekend..
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: If you've always wanted to learn surfing come on down or over! Always great whitewater for beginner lessons! When there is no swell it's a great time to volunteer at our local turtle sanctuary, located in Playa Buena Vista. Another option is helping out at the after school program at the "Intercultura Language school". For more info contact us. 656-0055 Pura Vida

** From Andrea at WavesCR Surf Camp and Instruction in Hermosa -

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Not much, the swell is not going to pick up for the next few days.
