Protest Sparks Debate over Beach Camping by Steven J. Barry -
sbarry@.... What began as a trip to protest restricted
access to public beaches at the Papagayo Peninsula in northwestern
Guanacaste this week grew into a dicey debate about the legality of
camping at those beaches.

In other news, 'WE made it!': More than two dozen members of the
Sustainable Solutions Caravan traveled from San Francisco, Calif., to
San José, Costa Rica, on two old buses fueled by vegetable oil. The
group arrived here last Friday after a two-month excursion through
Mexico and Central America to tout the benefits of biodiesel. Tico

We now have Surfrider contacts in Manzanillo, San Jose, Jaco and
Tamarindo! Send me a note if you are interested in working on a Costa
Rican chapter of the Surfrider Foundation - Protecting the World's
Oceans, Waves, and Beaches.

Have a question? We have answers! Send a note to info@...
before your next trip to get the info on waves, boards, and places to
stay.

TIDES *for Friday
(add 50 min. each day after)

New Moon - January 21st

Low Tide: (-.71) ft at 9:49 am
High Tide- 9.5 ft at 4:08 pm

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Strong tide shift with the new moon this weekend, combined
with some NW swell produces 1-2 foot overhead waves for most
consistent spots. Drops off to head high Sunday afternoon as the
swell passes offshore and doesn't strengthen until Wednesday morning,
building back to 1 foot overhead faces. Great 2-3 foot overhead set
waves stick around until Friday evening. Best dawn patrol - Wednesday
morning.

Caribbean - A short burst of NE swell pegs the coast Saturday with
overhead surf and then drops a foot by Sunday evening. Then another
swell from the ESE arrives on Tuesday at dawn pushing surf head high
and increases throughout the day. Look for 2+ overhead sets on Wed.
before it drops back to head high by Thursday and smaller going into
the weekend.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande:

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:
Waves are in the chest to head high range. The wind is the tricky
part, as it's been going onshore in the afternoon. When we do have
the right combination of tide and offshore winds, it's all time at
Grande.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este
fin de semana (clima y olas): Swell slowly decreasing over the
weekend. Unpredictable winds.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: The main peak at Grande and
peaks to the south.

JACO & HERMOSA

this page)

** From Chuck at Chosita del Surf in Jaco -

Instead of lugging your boards through airports, just get one custom
made and ready for you in Jaco for only $200 for 10 days with leash
and board bag thrown in. You like it, you can buy it, too. Or the new
H.I.C.s are available and got some new ones on the way. Anybody want
a Merrick for less than 550$ or maybe a T+C by Cino Or Glenn Pang for
around the same $, Only at La Chosita Del Surf will you find this
kind of board selection. See ya soon, Chuck !

** From Guido from Hotel Fuego del Sol in Playa Hermosa -

Another swell comming in for the weekend, doesn´t seem very big but
it´s going to be good anyway, it comes from west and then changes
towards SW, winds form Ne and changing after the 24th, best day it´s
probably Friday with some six footers and good wave periods. Tide is
high in the afternoon and very big, ( 9.2 feet avg ) best time to
surf is noon time and later before it gets too much water. Have fun
and see you at the beach.
