AREA REPORTS (sent in on 10/28 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We have been enjoying a nice, just overhead swell for the last few days. The summertime off shores are sculpting out perfect bowls for the light crowd. The wind is switching to on shore in the afternoon.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): It should be excellent for the morning high tides this week.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The entire bay has peaks working all the way to Tamarindo.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

2 days ago (thursday), avellanes was really fun at avellanes. chest to head high + and clean conditions. the rivermouth in tamarindo was good as well. clean, although somewhat smaller.

yesterday (friday), we took a surf tour to marbella. it was glassy and big. nice barrels with offshore winds. it was about 4-7 feet. the outer reef was working at 6-8ft, some sets were bigger than that. The surf school went to La finca, where it was 4-6 feet on the sets, although it was somewhat less clean with light onshore winds.

and today, we went to avellanes. it was very glassy, although rather small, with waves about thigh to shoulder high. it was a perfect longboarding day.

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been big. Playa Negra has seen big closeout sets beyond the boil rock. Avellanas rivermouth was double overhead plus. Robbie got the barrel of his life. The weird weather is still with us and different everyday. Some nice mornings.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The surf will come down a bit through the weekend with headhigh sets. By mid week the waves will pickup out of the south with way overhead sets. Low tide is right in the middle of the day so those morning sessions at Negra will be great with the outgoing tide all morning.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: At Avellanas the left in front of Lolas will be good for the weekend. Check out Negra at mid week. It will be going off.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: John Lyman will shoot you 40 times an hour. John Lyman Photos at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Sunrise at the Samara Surf School -

rain is hitting the beautiful Samara beach this week, but looks like the swell is up. So bring your boards and come surfing. Good surf times are early mornings and mid day to late afternoons.

Nice glassy evening sesh's, with occasional wind and chop but some nice form. New and upcoming events: Samara is starting a recycle program now, benefitting the beach and the local school children.

Festival de Sabores - Samara 2006 February 17 from 12-8pm An international flavor festival, food and wine tastings from all of the different cultures living in the community.

Project Buena vista, goal is to raise $10,000 to help the local families, kids, schools and community.

** From Rancho Coral in Playa Esterillos -

Thanks for sending us swell to California where our team as risen to become one of the top contenders for the World Surfing Games here in Huntington Beach, California. The Costa Rican National Team has beaten so many other great teams such as Tahiti to place Eight overall out of Thirty Three and Fourth in the Tag Team Finals. Big Thanks to Jose Urena who has been such a huuuuge asset coaching and guiding The Costa Rican Team, Antonio Pilurzu and Christophe Commaieru Ellen Golden for their dedication and hard work supporting and bringing our Team to World Ranks, Pura Vida!

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Tiny today (shoulder high with occasional head high), but should be swelling overhead by Sunday. A big swell looks like it is looming, but that probably won't arrive til next weekend.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Sunday is showing a good possibility of a reasonable swell. The early morning and the evening sessions should both be good because of the tide.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach at Dominical or Hermosa.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 10/20 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Big and stormy. Not very rideable at Grande since Monday when temporal-like weather moved in and doesnt' seem to want to go anywhere. Intermittent rain throughout the day with strong winds coming in off the ocean from the south.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Looks like more of the same, unfortunately, with no relief until Monday at the earliest. Ugh.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Look for protected point breaks. Grande is not rideable.

** From Keith at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -(10/13)

The surf at the rivermouth was good. it was pretty clean early on, becoming somewhat disorganized later. The surf school took it's graduation trip to avellanas today. the conditions weren't ideal, however. it was about 3-5 feet, but a lot of whitewater. there were a few really nice outsiders that came through though, some with nice barrels. There was a lot of rain again today... Hopefully it stays clean longer into the day tomorrow. WRSC photographer

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been big. Way overhead sets at all the tides. The weather has been terrible. The rainy season has showed up right when southwest swells have been marching in. lots of oshore wind with choppy oceans, cloudyskies with plenty of rain.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Looks like more clouds and rain for the next few days. Beyond that it's hard to tell but it is the time for rain so expect that. If it's going to be surfable, it will be early at mid tide.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: I hear that Langosta has been pretty good. Playa Negra has been not that good.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Check out John Lyman Photos at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Jesse at the Samara Surf School -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: some small but nice shapped waves rolling in. But in chocolate milk water.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): With the new moon coming up, always we except some swell maybe to 5 foot or so.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Best spot in Samara is right in front of the Las Brisas Del Pacifico Hotel. No localism or crowds. Waves may not be as big as other cities, but mellow and safe beach break, with extremely easy access. Perfect for surfers of all levels.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: New and upcoming events: Samara is starting a recycle program now, benefitting the beach and the local school children. also: Festival de Sabores Samara 2006 February 17 from 12-8pm An international flavor festival, food and wine tastings from all of the different cultures living in the community. Project Buena vista, goal is to raise $10,000 to help the local families, kids, schools and community

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: YO MAN, dis be da big wet mon! Waves are 4/6 ft faces and if you plan it right you can get a half hour of great surf in between half hours of slop , stormy close-interval wind swell but Jacos okay ! Okay we are about a month away from a great contest it's the Annual SURF AND SPIKE at the BEST WESTERN with great waves and great prizes, imagine you can book your trip and if you surf good enough you could win enough to pay for your whole trip and take some souvienirs home too! This gig has been going on for 6 years and it just gets better and the trip packages are pretty good, book a couple of extra days to travel some too, crowds are down then and the waves are good ! How about if it was like this for the contest , 5/7 ft faces and firing rights off the bar out front ! Check out www.costaricaexcursions.com for some more updated info and package deals ! Tuanis and Happy Surfing ! Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF !

** From Nathon at Nathon's Place in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: 4-6ft. Jaco' w\offshore winds and choppy water. 4-71/2ft. Hermosa w\offshore winds and cough choppy water and strong current. The water is like greenish because of the persistent rain.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) : Expecting plenty of rain and cloudy skys. 4-6ft - 3-5ft jaco'. 4-7ft - 3-6ft Hermosa'

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Hermosa & La Isla in Herradura bay.

NEWS: Live Music on weekends at Nathon's Surfer Hostel. The one Hostel that playes Rock'n Roll & Heavy Metal all the time.

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Still with an ear infection and not surfing, this will be a "from the sidelines" report. The ocean has been rough from storms and is choppy. However, the underlying waves look good and are often overhead. The rides I'm seeing seem to require a good bit of reading ahead from the rider as they are irregularly shaped and broken, but with some rides being spectacular.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): From LOLA, it looks great if we can get some calmer water (and, I'll finally be back in the water to enjoy it). There is one short period swell of about 4 ft. and a long period swell of 5ft, the two coming from two different directions. These will probably bring in some nice peaky waves at the beach. The tide, however, is exactly wrong for the morning session which is the most promising from a weather stand point. So, its one of those weekends that we'll just have to wait and see.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The beach at Dominical or Hermosa.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 10/14 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Light offshores in the morning the last few days, coinciding with a head high swell in the water making for pretty fun conditions for Thursday and Friday morning sessions in Playa Grande. Saturday morning the wind went onshore early leaving us with bumpy, messy conditions.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The wind might cooperate a bit more over the next few days for the morning session in Grande, but get on it early.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Daybreak at Grande.

** From Ed at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -(10/13)

Well we're still enjoing the swell, right here in front of our camp we had dome decent waves, nothing too special, with onshore wind. I heard from our guides and guest's that Marballa was pretty big, over head on the sets, really good with the incoming tide. Advanced grup went today to Witc's Rock and Ollie's point and the had some clean head high waves at Ollie's, "Roca Bruja" didn't work that good. Let's see what comes tomorrow. Pura Vida - Ed

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been chest to head high with fair shape. The weather has been typical for this time of year with partly cloudy skies in the morning and rain in the afternoons and early evenings.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect more of the same. The swell should pick up a bit out of the south, 200 to 220 degrees around mid week for sets in the head high to a bit over head.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Langosta just south of Tamarindo has been good on the incoming tide with almost nobody around. Just the friendly locals that hangout there. Just throw them a bone and you'll get all the waves you want. Bow wow!

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Check out John Lyman Photos at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waves were quite fun today about 4/6 ft faces right out front with the mid tide it really was quite nice ¡ Expect tomoorw to be a bit larger and heavier with some local wind swell mixed in with the s.w. we have showing right now ! Yep KELLY did it again and on Als boards again, is it the boards or the surfer or just some magic combo ! I think it's the combo , otherwise why would this guy ride for the same shaper for over 20 yaers and never step out ! Congrats Kelly and now hows he going to top this one huh ! Got the new goods in and coming so if you want to see them just come on by the shop , K/BRDS and K/SMALLS along with a few stepups and such so swing in and check em out ! Thanks , Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF !

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: I've been out of the water for a week with an ear infection so this is a "from the beach" report. The waves have been disgustingly nice. Peaky, head high, hollow at lower tides, possibly too mushy at higher tides.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) : Hard to tell from LOLA. There appears to be a big event coming late Sunday and early Monday, but it is a one day event and those usually don't amount to much. So, it should be at least a little bigger and at worst the same.

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 8, Issue 352
October 8th, 2006

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Head high surf greets Sunday surfers, with one or two overhead sets each hour. It stays the same on Monday and Tuesday morning, smaller with the tide going out and bigger with it filling in, but a SSW arrives at sunset and on Wednesday set waves are 1-2 foot overhead down south, overhead sets up north. The swell pushes through Friday morning, but the sets diminish to overhead and inconsistent throughout the weekend. Another SSW arrives next Tuesday with more 1-2 foot overhead surf.

Caribbean - Large fetches of storms across the Caribbean Sea push in an ENE swell on Monday morning, with surf chest high and a few head high sets peaking in the evening and Tuesday morning. Tuesday the swell sticks around, but Wednesday it drops back to waist high. Thursday and Friday is knee to waist, and Saturday is back to knee high.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 10/7 or posted)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We've had an insanely sunny week for October and off shore winds all day every day except today and yesterday. The surf has been on the small side, and really nice. Wave size today is about waist high. The water is warm and clean. Hemos tenido una semana de un sol loquisimo por ser octubre y vientos off shore todos los dias excepto hoy y ayer. Las olas han sido pequenas y muy lindas. Hoy las olas estan de a la cintura. El agua esta caliente y limpio.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Sunset sessions are in this weekend unless we get some of the rain we need. Wave size is supposed to drop off and continue to do so through the middle of next week. Este es el fin de semana para surfear al atardecer a menos que nos llege la lluvia que tanto necesitamos. Las olas seran cada dia mas pequenas de ahora hasta la mitad de la semana proxima.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Langosta and Playa Grande have the better surf right now, but there are also waves in Tamarindo from Pico Pequeno to the rivermouth. Langosta y Playa Grande tienen las mejores olas ahora, pero tambien hay olas pequenas en Tamarindo desde Pico Pequeno hasta la boca del rio.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The last few days have seen a nice head high swell in the water with good shape (great shape considering the time of year, actually!) We've actually had some beautiful offshores (with occasional nortes swirling and misxing it up a bit) with this swell, but even when it's gone onshore it's held it's shape. The high tide is in the afternoon now, so the takers had to surf onshore winds today, but the shape was surprisingly good. Lots of fun!

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Looks like the wind is going to be onshore tomorrow, Saturday, but perhaps enough norte so that there's still decent shape, as there was today. Sunday looks like it might have some offshores in the mix. Plenty of fun swell in the water, so it should be good.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Try Playa Avellanas, Avellanas Rivermouth, and Playa Negra for the morning session and then Grande in the afternoon, if you don't mind some onshores.

** From Ed at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

Hola amigos. Today we had bad conditions, our swell is gone and off shore winds are BACK. Some 2/3ft waves right here in front and some sets waves coming in, but not pretty consistent. That's it for today. Pura vida- Ed

** From Jesse at the Samara Surf School -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: expecting a big swell with today being the full moon. Not much out there, great waves for beginners. Mostly choppy, but nice and warm.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): expect to see some 4 to 6 foot waves, with always the choppy conditions. But good glass after rainstorms.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: New and upcoming events: Samara is starting a recycle program now, benefitting the beach and the local school children. also: Festival de Sabores - Samara 2006 February 17 from 12-8pm An international flavor festival, food and wine tastings from all of the different cultures living in the community. Project Buena vista, goal is to raise $10,000 to help the local families, kids, schools and community

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Smallish conditions at all the beachbreaks but signs ofd some west thing are there but we have a couple thunder heads offshore so maybe its storm bump but heres hoping for some relief from fun chest to head high surf everday for the last week ¡ Hah Hah , like we should really complain or something ¡ Weather is super and no crowds right now , saw Shea Lopez blowing up at Gullies the other day and its was kind of neat because it was a total of 4 guys out ! Crazy ! Anyways have a nice week and great waves ! Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF !

** From Nathon at Nathon's Place in Jaco -

Jaco' - Hermosa: Weather - Warm Cloudy with possibilities of rain. Wave conditions and heights - Jaco': 3 - 5 ft average. at high tide till next Thursday or so. Hermosa 4 - 6 ft average at high tide. Brought to you by Nathon's Surfer Hostel en Calle Central in Jaco' Beach, Costa Rica. HAVE A NICE DEATH!!!

** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Head high waves with good form at lower tides. The high tide is very high (supposedly 10' 7" tomorrow) and so the waves are very mushy at the top. There are two fairly equal events coming from 212 and 190 making for some interesting shapes. The water is uncharacteristically dirty with lots of organic matter (leaves and branches) floating around especially when it is raining.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): Pretty much the same. The weather has been great for the rainy season. Lots and lots of sun.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach in Dominical. The river mouth has a bunch of uneven sand bars and so is broken up and a bit crazy, but anywhere south of that is fine.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 9/30 or posted)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Beautiful, just overhead and offshore conditions on Thurs. and Fri. Mellow morning tides and light crowds.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): If the wind stays off shore this weekend we should have great surf - maybe slightly disorganized due to the menacing rainny season just to our south. The tides are perfect with the sessions beginning at day break.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The best peak seems to be a little south of the main peak in front of the hotel, but there are decent peaks all up and down the bay.

** From Ed at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

Well today it happen what we were waiting for..after few days with really good conditions the bad days are coming, after the storm is coming the calm...today was the first day of the calm. Waves were like 2-3 ft and on shore wind. The ricer mouth was the best place for today. Pura Vida, Ed

** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been in the head high to a foot or two overhead on the sets. The weather has been great. Sunny and offshore in the mornings.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell is on the way down but look for more SW by midweek. How long before the real rainy season sets in?

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Look at Negra with incoming tide and Avellanas with the outgoing tide. Negra has been good and empty at midday.

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: 3-4 ft. with some bigger sets and clean mornings, afternoons were real nice for a bit but we have some onshores blowing until near dark so the surfing is abit more technical, still better than a lot of places ¡ Hermosa is super fun in the mornings as the tide drops out so be there ¡ Pura Vida, Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF¡ Oh we have a super cool contest here in Jaco Oct. 28th all ages but on longboards only and its in memory of Alex our friend from Christian Surfers who was so cruely struck down by a hit and run driver this past spring. It's a good thing and funds go to the Chrisian Surfers group to help set a better example which I am sure you have noted we really need in our NEW WORLD ! I have all the info here so let me know. Thanks Chuck !
