NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Two pulses to watch out for this week. For Monday and Tuesday it's the calm before the South swell, chest to head high with an overhead set every half hour, a foot smaller up around Tamarindo. Then Wednesday, sets 1-2 foot overhead arrive from from south with an 18 second period. Thursday they pile in at 1-3 foot overhead with double overhead sets and a 14 second period. This first pulse stays until Friday midday, and then fades back to a foot overhead for Saturday. On Sunday, the second south pulse files in with long period ground swell lasting until Tuesday of next week, 1-3 foot overhead. Left point breaks are the call.

Caribbean - Monday morning sees dropping surf from head high down to a few chest high leftovers from the East. Tuesday through Thursday is hit and miss knee to waist high surf mostly, and a rare chest high set showing Thursday morning. Another small ESE swell is brewing but will not see landfall until next Sunday.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 5/27)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Against all odds with the afternoon high tide and the partially cloudy conditions, we enjoyed 4 hours of off shore, just overhead, beautiful surf on Fri. after a week of mostly disapointing, although rideable, conditions.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): It's up to the wind and surface conditions since the small swell is perfect for here.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a
surfear este fin de semana en su area: Look for an unpopulated peak. The right
at the main peak is working perfectly if you want to compete.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo:

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Longboards only! Surf in Tamarindo today is smaller than other days this week, sets being waist high. It's a great time to learn and the water is very warm. The wind has been off shore on rainy afternoons and onshore during the day. Solo longboards!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The weekend is going to look a lot like this according to reports. Be patient and rest up for next week!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Grande to the north and Langosta to the south are both picking up the small swell a little better.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones:

Friday, May 26th brought clean, head-high waves with fun sets rolling through every 20 minutes or so. Winds have been light and variable most of the day - the clouds and rain storms keeping the hard onshores from gathering any strength. New order of BIC surfboards now in stock - call or click my website to contact me: www.coconutharrys.com

** From Jesse at Samara Surf School -

The swell was up, today was the New moon and the waves backed down. Real choppy conditions due to the rain. Nice white water during mid tides and some nice 3 to 4 foot waves an hour before and after high tide. Come over and surf with us. www.samarasurfschool.com

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Surf in Jaco is small and clean right now , dont have a forecast for you but its been fun and variable conditions with waist to double overhead in the last 10 days with a few overhead standout no closeout sessions and lots of glass ! JACO LIKES THE RAIN! Thanks Chuck !

** From Tule at the Manuel Antonio Surf School:

For the coming week-end the waves in the Manuel Antonio/Quepos area will be about 2-3 feet en Playitas and about 1 foot at Manuel Antonio. The best conditions at Playitas will be found at half of the increasing tide. The best conditions in Manuel Antonio can be found at 3/4 of the increasing tide and of the decreasing tide.
The above described conditions will be maintained throughout the week-end. The days will be sunny and after 2 pm rains and off-shore wind are probably to expect.
The best spots in the area to surf during the week-end will be at Playitas and Playa del Rey which will have consistent waves and a beach brake.
News from the area is that as the marina soon to be will be constructed the Quepos bay unfortunately will lose its left.

** From Brice at Land Assurance Reforestation Service in Dominical:

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Small, shoulder to head high waves are peaky and fund. Best at mid-tide.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): We are expecting the same waves through the weekend but we have a little bump coming on Monday that should bring the waves up to head high.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Any of the beach breaks.

General Information for Dominical surfers
· Dominical is getting more crowded with each passing season. However, there is still plenty of room and plenty of waves for everyone. Be courteous and save your aggression for driving the bumpy roads where you'll need it.
o Playa Dominical is known as the most consistent surf spot in Costa Rica. There is almost always a wave worth riding.
o It is also known as a powerful break. I've been on much bigger waves at other breaks, but I've never been hammered quite as hard as by a big, mid-tide wave at Dominical.
o It is almost impossible to surf at dead low tide as the waves close out into very shallow water. I recently broke my back at a lower tide by doing a head butt into the sand.
o The mid-tides are great for more advanced surfers. The waves at mid-tide are faster and hollower and always less crowded.
o The high tide wave is the most popular but on smaller days is too mushy and frustrates short boarders. This is a good condition to pull out the long board and frustrate the short boarders even more.
o The bigger the wave, the more you should focus on high tide.
o On big wave days the current can be strong. It is usually best to walk to the end of the beach at the foot of the current and let it push you up or down as the case may be.
o The beach runs from the south east to the north west. Looking straight out to sea perpendicular to the beach you are looking at an angle of 210 degrees south west. This means that a swell coming from 210 degrees is most likely going to be closing out, where a swell coming from under 200 degrees or over 220 (rare) will have better form.
o Usually, but not always, when the waves come from less than 210 degrees the current flows south to north.
o When it rains, the river can act up and dump some pretty nasty, cold and muddy water. So, if it is raining, most people tend to stick further south near the cell tower.
o It may be my own bias because I am goofy, but the beach seems to favor left rides over rights (say 3 lefts for every 2 rights?).

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Monday surf in the south is still a foot overhead and only the two foot overhead sets disappear on Tuesday. Same for Guanacaste coast, but without the big sets. They show up for the whole coast Wednesday afternoon with the rising tide - 2-3 foot overhead and double overhead sets by Thursday midday. This SW swell closes out most beachbreaks, so check the points Thursday and Friday. Friday afternoon the swell shifts to the SSW, so head south to some dream lefts for the weekend as the swell fades back to 1-2 foot overhead. Consistent overhead surf from the SSW all next week!

Caribbean - Knee high until Wednesday when a few waist/stomach high waves breka up the monotony. Then back to flat for Thursday until Saturday. On Saturday afternoon a few chest high sets roll in from the ESE and by Sunday the chest high surf sticks around and grows a foot for Monday.

Small, peaky waves but a bit windy during the mid-day high tide.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Looks like tomorrow we should get a bump in the height. We are expecting head high waves with some occasional overhead action. 4:00 pm should be a good time to target your session as the wind may be subsiding and there will still be enough tide to keep the beach from closing out.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Rumor has it that the point was working on the last 4' swell we had so it may work this time too. Of course, the beach was also fun on the last swell and Hermosa is always like the beach, so take your pick.

· I'll try to expand this repeated portion of the report as time permits.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 5/6)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Huge, slightly mixed up, waves closing out the north end of the bay even though the wind is off shore in the morning for high tide.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): As the swell drops and cleans up over the weekend, we should see some good surf here with the moderate morning tides and off shore wind.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We've been slipping down the service road to the Tamarindo Estero mouth area and enjoying some fun head high waves, but plan to move back up here as soon as the swell starts to drop.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Late Thursday afternoon you could see the swell starting to hit here in Tamarindo and this morning waves wereup to head high with bigger sets. The main beach was fairly closed out as usual, but a nice left shoulder ran toward the rivermouth, the rivermouth was throwing rights and Pico Grande was breaking both directions.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): It's going to be a great one with morning surf and nice wind! Get out there an enjoy it! Vaya y disfrute!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Tamarindo is great, Langosta is enormous; every place is a good place right now!

** From John Lyman Photography in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been big. Playa Negra has seen some triple overhead sets today and yesterday. Many larger set waves are too south and closed out. Light offshores under sunny skies in the mornings. Light onshores in the later afternoons. Still hasn't rained here yet.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect big surf to comtinue into the first part of the upcoming week with a decrease in size by Tuesday into Wednesday and then another good size south swell filling in by late Thursday and holding for next weekend.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Negra is big and gnarly. Really for experts only. The surf is smaller and much more manageable at Avellanas. Check out the beach break in front of Lola's with the incoming morning tide and check out the rivermouth and Little Hawaii as the tide gets low. Much more user friendly there.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Please! Help us stop the condo towers at Playa Negra. Write pabloscr@... or pcowan@... and tell him you don't want his condo towers at Playa Negra. Help us to keep Playa Negra natural and beautiful. Thank you.

** From Jesse at Samara Surf School -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: BIG SWELL IS CORRECT! And it's here in Playa samara..... Some 8 to 10 foot close outs rolling into our little bay! Beautiful early morning and sunset sesh's for the advanced surfer, with perfect whitewater conditions throughtout the day for beginners, and nice small inside waves for intermediates! Come on over. A bit choppy, but offshore winds in the mornings.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Swell expected to hold for a couple of days, rain expected to fall so plan on some chop, but glassy after rainstorms.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The best surfing spot in Samara is right in front of the Las Brisas Del Pacifico hotel. No crowds or localism, with the waves breaking a little farther off shore.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: The conditions in Samara are good for all surfers to come and enjoy!! So if you've always wanted to learn surfing come on down or over! Always great conditions for beginner to intermediate lessons! Pura Vida - www.samarasurfschool.com

** From Tule at Manuel Antonio Surf School -

** From Brice at Land Assurance Reforestation Service in Dominical:

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: The waves are well overhead but coming straight at the beach (210 degrees from the South West). This is causing Dominical to close out. However, a rare shoulder can be found for a short and sweet or a longer and very fast ride.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND: It looks like the 6' swell will be letting up by Saturday or Sunday and a remaining 4' swell will remain for a week. Usually, when a swell breaks up, even if the swell came from 210 degrees, the waves get peakier and great rides can be had.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Except for the crowd, the point (considered crowded with 10 or more surfers) will be the best place to surf today (Friday) and tomorrow. By Sunday, the beach should be back in action.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 4/29)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: This swell is hitting well overhead here, but generally pretty messy with the high tides in the afternoon and mostly on shore by then. In the early part of the week the onshores were light enough to keep it fun.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): We are hoping for some afternoon glass offs or maybe a little rain to smooth out a hefty, but manageable swell.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: It has been a little smoother to the south toward Tamarindo.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waves in Tamarindo were chest high yesterday at the high tide but will be smaller over the weekend. The wind pattern has shifted out of the summer off shores and now blows on-shore from about 10 AM to 5 PM.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): This weekend the waves are expected to be smaller and the wind should be calm in the evenings for sunset sessions.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Head to Playa Grande this weekend for some nice longboarding in the afternoons.

** From Stephen at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: A swell has arrived in Tamarindo finally, tides are getting better for a morning/evening session and we're looking at 3-4 feet out front. Rivermouth is slightly larger, this should start to organize itself over the next few days.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell should continue through the weekend, maybe growing a bit. By Sunday, a morning session should be doable.

BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Negra and Grande should be firing. Avellanes may offer a more mellow wave with more peaks.

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Rains may start to show up in this region, but the sun will be out, the beer will be cold, and the Nachos will be as big as your A** at Witchs Rock Surf Camp! Come check us out!

** From John Lyman Photography in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has picked up quite a bit. We have head high to a foot or so overhead on the sets. Too south for here so alot of the sets are closed out. It has been glassy or slightly offshore in the morning and light onshore breezes in the afternoon. Sunny and warm in the mornings and clouding up in the later afternoons. It trying hard to rain and it won't be long now.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect surf in the head high and a little bit bigger for the weekend and into the beginning of the week. It is suppose to get bigger by Wednesday with a significant southwest swell lasting into next weekend. The weather should stay about the same. Maybe it will finally rain this coming week. We need it here.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We have early morning high tides this coming week so Playa Negra will be the spot for the morning and afternoon sessions. Look for good surf at Avellanas during the midday tide going out sessions.
Thank you.

** From Manuel Antonio Surf School -

** From Brice at Land Assurance Reforestation Service in Dominical:

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: A bit of a swell has sent in some head high waves from the southwest. The big ones are mostly closed out but the smaller ones are often peaky and fun.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): It looks like the waves will continue almost exactly as they are for another week.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The beach in front of Dominical and Playa Hermosa to the south are the best bet. The waves are not big enough to light up the point. At Playa Dominical, the whole beach is good from Roca Verde to the river mouth. The waves seem to be good from two and a half hours before to two and a half hours after the high tide (which is right around 3:00 pm).
