CR Surf Report for 4/23/06

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 8, Issue 330
April 23th, 2006

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Stays small until Wednesday afternoon, when the first headhigh sets march in from a SW swell. This swell lasts four days (4/27 - 4/30), with waves 1-2 foot overhead down south and overhead up north, dropping only a foot by Saturday. On Sunday, another push from the SSW brings it back to a foot overhead, and this swell lasts ALL NEXT WEEK!

Caribbean - If you can't wait until Wednesday for surf, head over to Limon for a dawn patrol with surf 1-3 foot overhead from a powerful East swell. Drops fast on Tuesday, from a foot overhead down to head high by sunset. Wednesday has some leftover chest high surf and by Thursday it's back to flat - knee to waist. Nothing new expected through next Monday.

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Dropping surf from headhigh Sunday down to chest high by Tuesday. A head high set appears every hour from the South through the rest of the week, but otherwise it's going to be small, chest high at the better beachbreaks and waist high at the outgoing tides and smal1ler spots. Stays small until Wednesday afternoon, when the first headhigh sets march in from a SW swell. This swell lasts four days (4/27 - 4/30), with waves 1-2 foot overhead.

Caribbean - Surf knee high with an occasional waist high set every 30 minutes. No swells out in the Caribbean and no bigger surf expected all week. Saturday shows a week ESE system that send a few more waist high sets, but that's it.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 4/15)

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waste to head high on the sets but the wind has been coming onshore by midday for the last few days, well before high tide. The main peak has seen some decent conditions with smooth faces in the early afternoon, but by late afternoon it's quite messy with strong onshores out of the south.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): High tide is moving into the daybreak window so get on it early. The early morning sessions should be good, but expect the wind to move onshore by midday, as has been the recent pattern.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The best waves are at the main peak out in front of the hotel. Watch out for the Easter crowd.

** From Stephen at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Slight on shore winds here the past two days, dying off by mid afternoon though. We've seen 2-3 feet here in town, Rivermouth and across have been a little bit bigger. LOTS of people on the beaches and in the water.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): If the winds don't blow onshore in the mornings, we should see waves around 2 feet out front, slowly decreasing in size as the week goes on. Rivermouth should be cleaner and somewhat larger.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Negra and Guiones should have a little more size. Winds may be a factor.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Semana de Santa is in full affect, but great Sunsets and Nachos are still being served up at Witchs Rock Surf Camp Bar and Grill! 5-7pm every night is 2x1, come on by!

** From John Lyman Photography in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves went from fun headhigh and offshore to small, gutless and onshore by the end of the week. Bright blue skies all day and beautiful sunsets everynight.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Lots of people. Costa Rica goes to the beach this weekend. The surf is small and there is a pretty strong onshore breeze. Perfect for a Costa Rican holiday.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Negra doesn't see anywhere near the influx of Semana Santa travelers. The early bird here gets the waves now. It will be small pretty much all this next week as high pressure has set in over the South Pacific storm track and is predicted to linger until April 23rd or 24th. A small pulse could make it's way into Central America this upcoming mid week from a storm midway between New Zealand and South America. Nothing big but could be fun.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:

** From Coconut Harry's Surf Shop in Playa Nosara -

Real fun surf rolling in now with overhead set waves and long, walls - great surf here! Offshore winds until about mid-day and high tide in the afternoon, with light onshore or sideshore wind. A little crowded during peak times. Pura Vida, Coconut Harry

** From Rancho Coral in Esterillos -

Local Climate: Sunny, Air Temp: 94F. Water Temp 87F, Direction & Height: Southwest 4-6ft., Sea Surface: Clean, Winds: North 0-5 MPH, Sunrise: 5:03 AM Sunset: 5:36 PM, Current Condition: Congratulations on our Team's Big Finish in the CNS. We have great conditions here at The Ranch which should stay with us throughout the weekend, Happy Easter, Pura Vida!

CR Surf Report for 4-9-06

Costa Rica's Weekly Surf Report
Volume 8, Issue 328
April 9th, 2006

NATIONAL FORECAST

Pacific - Bigger 2-3 foot sets arrive on Sunday and the swell maxes next Monday with surf 1-3 foot overhead and a 17 second period. This lasts through next Wednesday morning. Expect frequent sets with 9-12 waves from combo swells from the NW and SSW. Pick a point break that picks up the SSW at dawn. After Wednesday, slowly fading surf, 1-2' overhead on Thursday, same on Friday and dropping to head high Saturday. Prepare for a drought of surf for next weekend and through next week, with nothing brewing down south.

Caribbean - ENE swell arrives today pushing surf back up to head high, but doesn't stick around past Monday morning, with smaller chest high surf that afternoon. By Tuesday afternoon it's back to waist high, with a freak chest high set every hour. More of the same Thursday and Friday. Saturday has an east swell sitting under the Antilles, but it does not make for waves at all. This is signalling the end of the season for the Caribbean. Hit or miss until December.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 4/8)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: There are waves all over the place this morning! The wind is only staying off-shore until around 10 AM these days, so get out there early. Wave size this morning varied between waist to head high. The water is warm again! Habia olas en todas partes esta manana. El viento esta off-shore solo hasta las 10 AM en estos dias, asi que vaya a surfear temprano. El tamano de olas era de a la cintura hasta de a la cabeza y el agua esta calientito!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell is just beginning so rest up! It supposed to pick up tomorrow and be even bigger on Monday. After the wind switches it gets messy, so don't sleep too late. El swell esta apenas empezando asi que descanse un poco. Debe ser mas grande manana y todavia mas el lunes. Cuando el viento se cambie, se pone fea--por eso hay que levantarse temprano.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The rivermouth and pico Grande are throwing rights, and there's a nice fast left at the beach break. Langosta and Playa Grande are bigger. La boca del rio y pico grande estan tirando derechas y hay una buena izquierda en la playa. Langosta y Playa Grande tiene olas mas grandes.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: A great week of overhead, off shore, morning, surf. Friday the wind switched before high tide and skunked the best part of the potential session.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The high tide is moving into the afternoon and the wind is switching early, so try to get out as soon as the tides are high enough.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: As the swell increases we can tuck into the bay toward Tamarindo on the service road and try the lower tides at the rivermouth before the wind switches.

** From Stephen at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Small with onshore winds developing early on. Morning time, a few hours before high tide is showing a little promise though. A walk down the beach and a little patience can net some early am waves!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Probably a little more of the same around here, maybe 3 feet at Rivermouth. Lots of crowds on the beach and in the water as it's Semana de Santa.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: With Semana de Santa on us, any beach that is hard to get to will be the best. Find an open facing beach, and you're bound to pick something up. I'm off to Ostional and Negra personally.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Hermosa - final leg of the Circuito Nacional Tamarindo and surrounding areas - Robert August Surf and Turf Contest Tamarindo - Witchs Rock Surf Camp serving up Nachos as Big as Your Ass and a great surfing/dining experience! Open mic Wed and Fri, 5-7pm 2x1 Happy Hour Everyday! Get Stoked!

** From John Lyman Photography in Playa Negra -

WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The waves have been head high to a few feet overhead and a little too south. Lots of big close outs mixed in with a good one every now and then. Bright sunny skies and light offshores in the mornings with those cool ocean breezes in the afternoons.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Playa Negra will be head high to a few feet overhead pretty much all of this coming week. Major storms in the South Pacific last week will bring in south swells for most of the Guanacaste gold coast. Expect sunny and hot at the beach with some fluffy clouds rolling by in the afternoons.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The swell is almost too south for Playa Negra. Check out Avellanas at the rivermouth or Little Hawaii because it's low tide in the mornings all this coming week and Avellanas take the south swell best.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:
Come to Tamarindo and get shot. Check it out at
http://tamarindobeach.net/photos_lyman/index.html

** From Jesse at Samara Surf School -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS -
Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The swell is back! 4to 5 foot waves rolling in. Best conditions are through the 6 hour span of high tide. The tides are lower now so the waves aren't as full. Easier to catch. A little choppy, soft peaks with great early morning through til mid afternoon seshs. Occasional off shore winds, for perfect wave conditions.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell expected to hold over the weekend, the forcast is "enormous swell" to be coming our way this Easter holiday... The waves are always bigger during Semana Santa, lets see what comes into our bay! It's looking to be pretty big today..... Some 6 to 7 foot waves rolling in already!! Maybe to hit 8 to 10 foot!! yahoo.. Perfect whitewater conditions, Great for beginners and children.
Lots of waves to catch, good inside break, nice small waves.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The best surfing spot in Samara is right in front of the Las Brisas Del Pacifico hotel. No crowds or localism, with the waves breaking a little farther off shore.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: The conditions in Samara are good for all surfers to come and enjoy!!
So if you've always wanted to learn surfing come on down or over! Always great conditions for beginner to intermediate lessons!
Pura Vida www.samarasurfschool.com

** From Coconut Harry's Surf Shop in Playa Nosara -

Solid head-high with overhead set waves rolling through every 15 minutes or so. Peaky north surf combined with long south lines that tend to close out around the lower tides. Mornings are best with glassy conditions and higher tide. Pura Vida, Coconut Harry www.coconutharrys.com

** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Surf conditions are okay here in Jaco 3-5 ft faces and growing , tides arent too good but you can get a screaming barrel here AND THERE ¡ I did a couple of hours at Estirillos and it was great fun too . The beach is packed at Hermosa and if the wind calms down should be quite a show tomorrow ! I guess that's it for now , Tuanis Chuck and the crew at W.O.W. SURF!

** From Brice at Land Assurance Tree Reforestation in Dominical -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Head high but a bit closed out. Very high tides are making the full tide surf mushy and best handled by long boards. These high tide waves are standing up one second and sitting down the next which can be frustrating for short boarders.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): We are expecting a little swell over the weekend which should jack the size up a couple of feet. But, since the waves are coming right at the beach from the southwest, it will likely be closed out even worse than it is right now.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: It is possible that the point may be working by Sunday, but if not, the beach should at least be better than nothing.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 3/31 and 4/1)

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: It's been another great week to learn to surf in Tamarindo. The wind has remained steadily off-shore and wave size has been not much more than waist high. The water is really cold! Ha sido otra semana excelente para aprender a surfear en Tamarindo. El viento sopla off-shore constante y las olas no son mas de a la cintura. El agua es muy fria!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Forecasts show a south swell that's supposed to start picking things up tomorrow and last through Monday. If the wind holds and the swell really does make it into the bay, it could be a weekend to remember. Los pronosticos tienen un swell que viene del sur y debe traernos olas desde manana hasta el lunes. Si el viento sigue bueno y el swell entra de verdad, puede ser un fin de semana inolvidable.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: While we wait for the swell, Langosta is the choice. Mientras esperamos el swell, Langosta sera el mejor lugar.

** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Head high, off shore, and nearly perfect with morning and evening sessions.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same with off shores letting off in the afternoon. Catch the morning session at daybreak.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: All the peaks are working in the north end of the bay.

** From Stephen at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -

Those insanely high tides are dropping finally, down to just over 10 feet now. After a couple of days of the water meeting the grass out in front, it's getting back to normal. Small swell out there right now, giving us some really nice looking beach breaks. Rivermouth is a little too deep right now, but it should start shallowing out over the next few days. The winds are mild today, waves are gentle and around 3 feet, feels like a perfectly lazy Saturday to have a seat, have a cold beer, and enjoy the Tamarindo sunset yet again! Really, there have been some incredible sunsets all week long, most impressive! Tomorrow should be mellow with calm off shore winds, waves in the early morning should be around 3 feet, then start picking up again a couple of hours before sunset. South Swell is just around the corner!

** From John Lyman Photography in Playa Negra -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: This past week saw medium size waves falling off to almost flat by Friday morning. The skies have been sunny and clear in the mornings with light to moderate offshores. The afternoons are seeing increased clouds and even a little rain towards the evenings. The seasons are changing.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect increased swell out of the southwest by Saturday afternoon and into Sunday with overhead waves by Monday afternoon. It should stay in the head high to well overhead for the rest of the upcoming week. The weather should be about the same with clear skies in the mornings and clouds building in the afternoon and the possibility fo some light rain.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We are coming into high tide in the mornings and afternoons so get ready for those great double sessions. With the building swell, Playa Negra and Avellanas will be the call. Expect a lot of company in the water.

** From Jesse at Samara Surf School -

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Woa!!! After an incredible hard rain storm, big hard drops falling down, the waves glassed out for a nice sunset sesh! Maybe 4 foot high, but pretty fast peak.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): If the rain keeps up there will be mostly choppy conditions. The waves could get bigger in size, maybe 5 to 6 feet. We'd love to see some bigger waves for the contest coming up. See Up coming events.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Always in front of the Las Brisas del Pacifico Hotel.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Come join us on Sunday April 2nd, in Playa Cameronal. The 3rd annual surf contest. Come see some of our own competing, James Flores and Pablo Sanchez Rodriguez. They will be representing Jesse's School. James won the contest in playa samara in September, and hopes to do it again. He is an incredibly good surfer and is looking for sponsers to help him compete with the professionals. He truely is a master, good enough to be on those traveling tours. He'll make you proud. If you visit the contest stop by Jesse's surf school on your way out, take a right at the Las Brisas Hotel, to come get some Jesse's shirts to help support our guys while they compete. Come in and get a free smoothie and some cookies! Pura Vida Sunrise www.samarasurfschool.com

** From Coconut Harry's Surf Shop in Playa Nosara -

Hola from Nosara (Playa Guiones), Friday - it's small (waist/chest high) surf, but with pretty good shape. Best times are early mornings or late afternoons. Pura Vida, Coconut Harry www.coconutharrys.com
