As I am packing my bags for another flight down to Costa Rica for a ‘business' trip, I thought I would make it a little easier for those travelers wondering which airlines are the most surfer friendly. Here's what I found….
From MartinAir.com -
http://www.martinair.com/us_en/services/beforedeparture/baggage.aspx
Three pieces of luggage, including one carryon. Passengers may carry maximum 2 surfboards, in the same bag, as one piece of luggage as long as the bag does not exceed 70lbs in weight and is no longer than 10 feet.
From SpiritAir.com –
http://www.spiritair.com/welcome.aspx?pg=policies#CheckedBag
The charge for surfboards is $50 one-way and may only be paid at the airport.
Starting February 20, 2008 and beyond, our checked baggage fees are as follows: Fees for transporting the first two pieces will increase from $5.00 to $10.00 per bag if payment is made online in advance. When paying at the airport fees will increase from $10.00 to $20.00 per item. Items that are overweight or oversized will continue to be weighed and sized at the Airport, and fees collected at check-In.
Spirit Airlines can only guarantee the transportation of one (1) item as checked luggage per fare-paying customer at the airport. Additional bags are accepted only when reserved in advance online at www.spiritair.com. If not reserved, Spirit cannot guarantee that there will be space for additional bags and will not be held responsible for any additional items brought to the airport by the customer.

Surfboards: As checked baggage:
Up to 2 surfboards in one bag permitted per passenger
Charge of US $95 per bag, each way
Charge of US $50 per bag, each way, from Miami to San Jose for first 2 surfboards per passenger
from Delta.com - http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/baggage/baggage_allowance/excess_baggage/index.jsp#restrictions
If it's 62–80 inches, the total of length plus width plus height of your bag, $100 each bag each way. No more than two bags total, or you pay another $75 fee.
If it's over 80 inches, total of length plus width plus height, it's not permitted.
From AA.com – https://www.aa.com/aa/i18nForward.do?p=/travelInformation/baggage/baggageAllowance.jsp&anchorEvent=false
Surfboards, Kiteboards, Wakeboards One surfboard, Kiteboard, or Wakeboard $80
Exception:

- Exception: If the Kiteboard/wakeboard is less than 62 linear inches and 50 lbs., the above conditions do not apply
- If this item is in excess of the number of pieces allowed in the free baggage allowance, excess baggage charges apply in addition to the $80 special items fee.
From Continental.com –

Services charges (one way):
1 surfboard $95.00
1 surfboard bag containing up to two boards $95.00

Surfboards cost $50. There's no mention if it's one-way or round trip.
From United.com –
http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,1034,00.html
In the U.S., checked baggage that exceeds 62 inches/158 cm will be charged $100.00 per piece. They recommend that you contact your travel agent before making a reservation.
New!!
ATA Airlines is flying from Miami to San Jose now. They are charging $50 per board (even if they are in the same bag).

General Tips - Search for fares early in the morning and on weekends.
Airlines play games with airfares, sometimes, it seems, merely to annoy their competitors. If you check a New York to Seattle fare before going to bed one night it might be $228 round-trip, but check at 8 AM the following day and it could be $108. But that sneak sale, which could be valid for travel up to 330 days in the future, will probably last only a few hours, and seats will sell quickly. So be an early bird and catch these unadvertised deals. And for reasons that we can only speculate on, airlines lower fares on Saturday mornings and during the weekend (this is also when those “fat finger” airfare mistakes seem to happen). The aforementioned peak summer deals on Virgin to London popped up on a Saturday afternoon, and those now famous 88 cent USAir roundtrips on a Saturday morning.

The best time to surf the Caribbean side will be this Wednesday through Friday. After that, there's another big swell out in the Atlantic, but no signs when it will filter in to the coast. On the Pacific, the week starts slowly with chest high waves, then on Thursday some long range WNW swell gives the Guanacaste coast some head high surf. On Friday the Southwest swell arrives with a 16 second period. This swell lasts ALL NEXT WEEK, so bring your big wave stick.

Good morning folks! Surf is once again looking good in Guiones this mornin with chest high sets rolling in, and close to perfect form... Looks like long lines without too many closeouts... but we are approaching a low tide in a few hours, so that may start to change as the tide drops out. Looks like a tweener day, fish or shortboard??? No se mai... Looking ahead, you may want to make this a lay day as we have a new SW headed our way, should start impacting our surf this evening... 5ft at 14 secs... it is at 209, so that is a bit south, but it shouldn't be big enough to closeout... but we may have some pretty quick ones.

Make your plans to surf the Pacific early in the week, when waves are up to 1 foot overhead from a SW swell with a 16 second period. That's gone by Wednesday evening, leaving chest to head high leftovers all the way through the weekend and well into next week. The Caribbean is in the same boat, nice East swell early, but fading to waist high by Friday.

** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais (3/8) -

Make your plans to surf the Pacific early in the week, when waves are up to 1 foot overhead from a SW swell with a 16 second period. That's gone by Wednesday evening, leaving chest to head high leftovers all the way through the weekend and well into next week. The Caribbean is in the same boat, nice East swell early, but fading to waist high by Friday.

Both coasts sport surf a couple of feet overhead on Monday, but the pattern of dropping surf through the week is shared. On the east side, short period peaky overhead surf lasts until Friday, then disappears with the start of the weekend. On the west coast, Tuesday the SW swell peaks, but there will be only a few big sets during the day. A lot of the punch is being blocked by the Galapagos, and by Thursday the swell weakens down to overhead. It gets smaller for the weekend, but prepare for another SW to arrive by next Tuesday with surf a foot overhead.

AREA REPORTS
** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande (3/1)-
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Although the wind conditions and tides have been ideal, this hefty swell (double overhead set waves) has been raw and tricky. Even ducking down into the bay toward the Tamarindo Estuary didn't iron out all the double ups and close outs.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Friday showed some promise as the swell smoothed out and dropped just a bit. Hopefully Sat. will be clean enough to make the overhead and a half sets feel predictable.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The back side of this swell may produce a mysto session, but new raw swell will spoil our chance at some big, really good, surf if it arrives before Sun.
** From Carlos at Costa Rica Adventures in Playa de Coco (3/2) -
.. Reporte de Carlos Barrera and Adan Barrera - Witchs Rock Surf Tours, Boat trips, surf reports, fishing and photographer services. phone: 381-91-66 email rocasurf@... or witchsrocksurftours@... or www.costaricaaventuras.com
** From James at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo (2/29) -
The swell has dropped a couple of feet from yesterday (6-8 foot faces) but the wind is still howling off shore. I did not get my lazy self into the water today even after yesterdays success but our guys went to Avellanas this morning and blew up.
** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (3/1)
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf has been good with way overhead sets with good shape. The offshore wind has been howling. Hot and sunny skies. Water temp is in the mid 70s.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The waves will stay in the overhead range for the next few days. The strong offshore wind should back down a bunch by midweek. Lot's of sunshine.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: We have high tide running through the mornings this week. Get out there early and score great waves with only a handful of friends. Bring your springsuit.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Check out the Playa Negra slide shows at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com
** From Steve at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones (3/1) -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Solid 6-8 ft, Off shore winds until 11 a.m. and some glass off at sunset. Best waves in a long time.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The forecast is for continued surf through out the weekend and more swell on the way for early next week.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Guiones has been firing. I have not heard about Ostional or other spots. It's been too good in our backyard here to try anything else.
** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (3/1)
I played hookie this morning and got about 3 hours in the water... but didn't shoot. The surf was pretty good with overhead waves coming through... It was somewhat closed out, but when you found a good one it was super good. I had a big ol' right open up for me for a rare almost standing tubo, and it gave me a few more turns after after the green room.
** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais (3/1) -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Consistent waves 4 to 6 foot - occasional 1 ft overhead sneaker sets. Great shape - some offshore winds in the morning and late afternoon. Sunny and hot
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expecting more of the same.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: All beach breaks firing.
** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco (3/1) -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waves are about 4-6 ft faces out front but we are blocked from most of this swell so I can imagine what a couple of my favorite places are like ! If you are out at Estirillos Oeste today enjoy the moments because I am recovering from "rotator cuff" surgery and am not out there enjoying this nice clean lined up just right swell but will be ready for May! Got the new White Dove and Proton models along with some pods and biscuits too by Channel Islands so come on by and check out whats hot in the U.S. and now here! Quads are everywhere and they are working insane for those adventurous enough to try them out! If you are heading to Puerto Viejo stop in at "ËL CHANTE" surfshop and see Sergio, he's up to date with good boards and other surfing needs ! PURA VIDA and HAPPY SURFING !
** From Andrea at Waves CR Surf Camp in Playa Hermosa (3/1) -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:
Waves have been constant 4+ feet, nice perfect glassy morning conditions. On the other hand the sunset surf session have been a little windy but a little more easy not as heavy as the morning sessions. Yesterday morning at the Almendro waves where at least double + overhead- makeable perfect heavy barrels where you can literally watch the pit spit…. A lot of broken boards and leashes….
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell will hold for the weekend getting a little bigger towards the beginning of the next week.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area:
The beach breaks are still holding so I would recommend almendro & gullys just look out for the croc. Or the drive to barranca might be worth it.

overhead

The excitement today isn't on the beach, it is about 600 miles out in the middle of the ocean, steam-rolling its way in... Looking at the forecast we have a full week of four and five star days!!! Should be overhead until next week starting tomorrow at some point... And for our Thursday, Friday sessions it is looking all-time, with 6 feet at 16 seconds from our sweet 216 direction... it is a rest and get ready, movie day today... I'll be hitting up the frog pad on the way home from the office. Today on the beach we have waist high surf, it is looking almost flat, with some good waits between sets... But who cares, as I can feel the energy headed our way!!!
** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais (2/23)-
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: head high - peaky, good shape in the morning. Wind in the afternoon
** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -

** From Andrea at Waves CR Surf Camp in Playa Hermosa -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones:
Overhead waves with nice glassy conditions in the mornings. LA Curva has been pretty fun, classic overhead conditions.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas):
Looks like the waves are going to stay like this for a couple of days.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area:

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Head high to a couple of feet overhead. No wind and early-morning/late-afternoon tide conditions. What more can one ask for. The conditions are what give Domincal beach its name. Really fun!!!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): More of the same but there are signs of a real swell brewing for later in the week.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: This is a good swell, but its not big enough to light up the Point. Stay at the beach but stay out of my way ;-)

** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (2/25)

The Caribbean continues its hot streak of overhead surf from the East, shrinking a foot Tuesday and Wednesday, but growing slowly back to 1-2' overhead through to the weekend. On the Pacific, first a WNW arrives giving the Guanacaste coast some overhead relief. Then on Thursday, a SW swell stirs up around Isla de Coco and pushes surf 1-2 foot overhead to the southern coasts. This swell is a little weaker up on the Nicoya, but still packs a punch and lasts all weekend. More SW arriving midweek next week.

Playa Negra has seen very small surf the last few days. Knee high on the sets. Hard offshore wind all day has dropped the ocean temp to the mid 70s. Coming up we have sunny and warm with those offshores continuing as our swell starts to pick up with a nice SW showing today and staying with us for the next few days. Look for head high plus sets through Monday. We have high tide running through the mornings now so get to Playa Negra early for some fun stuff with less people.

The Caribbean is the coast with the most this week and this weekend, with a solid 1-2 foot overhead arriving Wednesday, with many set waves for the reef breaks through the weekend. On the Pacific side it's the opposite, with only trace South swell pushing in weak waist high surf with a few chest high sets for the lucky beaches. The best bet is check the tides and surf at midtide going to high at the beachbreaks. The long range forecast isn't promising with a one foot increase for early next week from the WSW, but nothing following it for another 3 to 4 days.

AREA REPORTS
** From photographer John Lyman, Lyman Photos in Playa Negra - (2/4)
We've had a good run of SW swell with head high to a couple feet over on the sets. Sunny and windy. Great shape with 80 degree water. The next few days will see a decrease in swell as the storms down under have slacked a bit. Head high and small as the week goes on. Waist high by the weekend. Low tide in the mornings means checking out Avellanas rivermouth with a longboard.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Check out the Playa Negra slide shows at www.lymanphotos.sbpix.com
** From Erik at SurfingNosara.com in Playa Guiones - (2/5)
It has been good for a while now, but today is the day! Low tide, and the swell has dropped a bit so it is kind of missing that outside bar and firin on the inside... Gonna be a short report as I want to get some barrel shots today as Matt is in the water... SOUL ARCH MATT HERE: Well it was head high this monring but the tide was really low with not much offshore winds to hold em' up. There were however some really good nuggets from time to time. As you can see from the photos, we shot from the water and the beach today. The biggest heartbreak has to go to Pedro who was perfectly positioned on a macking left but couldn't go because of the board bailed right in his path. He made up for it on the next wave of the set though and all was right with the world again.
** From Hotel Buenisimo in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais (2/3)-
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Small - inconsistent.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Nothing on the horizon.
** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco (2/3)-
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Surfs small still but if you look out on the horizon you will see some big bumps , kind of interesting and maybe it will swing and come around to give us some surf tomorrow ? Yesterday was better at most spots but we hope it will be bigger ! Weather nice and lots of people here but of course many going home too ! Big concert was a success with Yankee Daddy for the "regatoneros "out there ! 10000 people bought tickets at WOW SURF and El Chunche office or in San Jose so I guess it was a big hit ! Congratulations on Sergio from Puerto Viejo in opening his new surf shop by Banco de Costa Rica . He has some nice boards and good accessories to offer so no more excuses , GO SURFING ! More on this later as well ! Thanks from the crew at WOW SURF !
