AREA REPORTS
** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: There's a little lull in the swell this weekend but sets are still shoulder high at the high tide. Yesterday the wind blew off shore all day making it surfing possible from dawn till dusk! Today it's on shore and cloudy so we expect some rain by afternoon. The water is warm and clear.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): There will be waves all weekend, especially in the mornings. Even with the wind on shore there's enough swell that it holds up. Habra olas todo el fin de semana, especialmente en las mananas. Aun con el viento on shore hay suficiente swell para que sea buena.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The Tamarindo beach break is working nicely and the rivermouth is rolling some nice rights when the tide isn't too high. For bigger surf, hit Langosta. La playa en Tamarindo esta buena y la boca del rio tira unas buenas derechas cuando la marea no esta demasiada alta. Para olas mas grandes, vaya a Langosta.
** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: It's been messy and oversize for most of the week until Friday when the off shores blew almost all day. It calmed down and smoothed out nicely at just overhead with some bombing sets. You still had to pick 'em and their was a slight lump here and there.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell is remaining consistent. Since we are right on the edge of the off shores, it's hard to predict and up to the wind. The tides are perfect for morning surf and good conditions. Expect the Independence holiday crowd.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: This is a good size for the peaks around the hotel.
** From Ed at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
How is life over there???? Well let me tell you what....here is life perfect, the paradise is helping a lot to make our life easy. This paradise and the swell for this week are working together for give us the week of the month. Perfect conditions, some clean 5/6 ft, long shoulders, off shore wind. Avellanas was perfect last two, Grande was holding the waves, nice barrels over there... really good. No rain the last three days...is just amaizing. Pura Vida, Ed
** From Rancho Coral in Playa Esterillos -
Local Climate: Nice, Air Temp: 94F. Water Temp 87F, Direction & Height: South Southwest 4 to6ft., Sea Surface: Clean, Winds: South 3 MPH, Sunrise: 5:53 AM, Sunset: 6:16 PM, Current Conditions- The crowds have left for summer and has rewarded its workers with over a week of solid surf and empty line ups. We have had an awesome season here at The Ranch and wishing you have it as good as we do. See you in Huntington in October 14 through the 22nd for The Lost Energy Games, Pura Vida!
** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Yesterday was head high and shrinking. This morning was shoulder high at best. But don't be discouraged, good stuff is coming our way soon.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): By Sunday we should have fully double overhead sets coming in at the beach. The swell direction is almost due south and should make spectacular lefts.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: Almost everywhere should be working well starting Sunday afternoon. The point should be going off as should be all the beaches from Ojochal to Puntarenas. I would guess the very best in the Dominical area will be the point but that is only if the beach is too big. With this swell direction, I'm pretty sure the beach will work. If surfing the beach, put in south of the cell tower. The current will be pushing north toward the river.
** From Marco at Hotel Totem in Playa Cocles -

Caribbean - Small surf Monday, knee to waist with a 10 second period and nothing bigger showing all week. Maybe a freak chest high set Thursday, but that's it, shorter period waves and no swell until at least next Sunday.

Area wave heights and conditions are 5-7 1/2 Ft. a bit rough, murky water with debris in the water with mainly closeouts from most of the beach with rights and lefts forming mainly in the rip current in Jaco'. Hermosa beach 5-10 Ft. waves, less murky but still dark from the sand, Very rough water, choppy also. I went out there the other day and spent like 10 - 15 min trying to get past the brake. It was pushing so hard that three full sets came through before I made it past the break again. There are some trees that washed up on shore so that only means there's still some debris out in the water. Along with both spots you will occasionally run into some jellyfish but it aint bad. Herradura Bay a la punta it's 5-9 Ft. waves all lefts with some close outs as usual and pretty non-murky waves.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Surf is chest to head high Sunday, up to consistent head high on Monday, and a few sets a foot overhead on Tuesday in the southern zone. By the afternoon the SSW swell fills in the Nicoya peninsula with the same head high surf. On Wednesday the bulk of the waves arrive, overhead with a 2 foot overhead set every half hour, and the size stays the same through Friday. Saturday a few bigger pulses show from nearby tropical formations. Sunday the waves drop two feet to head high, but another SW arrives next Wednesday with big surf and long period swell.
Caribbean - Monday will have waves chest high with only the best spots showing a head high peak on the sets. Tuesday through Thursday has surf waist high with chest high sets once an hour. Friday the sets disappear, and by Saturday a waist high wave will have to do since nothing else is showing.

NATIONAL FORECAST
Pacific - Overhead surf from the SW through Monday with a 14 second period, with a few 2 foot overhead sets hitting the Nicoya coast from the WNW from Hurricane Ileana on Tuesday. Wednesday the sets disappear and the waves drop to head high and by Thursday the head high surf only appears every 15 minutes. Friday through Sunday are small, only chest high with a random head high set, but on Monday morning the surf jacks up two feet from a south swell (smaller up north). First the sets are very infrequent, like every hour, but by next Tuesday it's solid 1-2 foot overhead. Stays consistent through all of next week from the SSW
Caribbean - Headhigh to overhead surf on Sunday from Tropical Storm Ernesto, but it fades fast throughout the day on Monday and by the evening is chest high on the sets. Tuesday it drops to waist high and stays in the waist high arena for the rest of the week and weekend.

AREA REPORTS (sent in on 8/25 or posted)
** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: This swell replaced the beautiful off shore surf at the beginning of the week. The heavy North angle and lumpy nafure did not make it ideal for our end of the bay. Friday actually had strong on shores at mid day, and then it rained. It felt like the beginning of the rainy season.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The day break and afternoon high tides should bring decent surf with glassey wind conditions. The swell needs to drop a hair to make it more manageable - which it seems to be doing.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: A short drive (3 min.) puts you at the Tamarindo Estero mouth during in coming tide which should be pretty good if we get an afternoon glass off.
** From Ed at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
Thursday, August 24, 2006 - SURFERS.....I want you to sit first and then you can read. Read first and then dream about being here. We woke up this morning for surf what we call GOOD WAVES. The swell just came in today and we already start having fun is 7/8 ft waves, nice barrels, long shoulders. In my case I got one of the biggest waves of the day and I'm still having pictures in my mind about it and that was 4 hours ago. Everywhere is woking with this swell, Playa Grande, Avellanas, Negra is huge....so go and take notes about all this swell and make sure that you're here next time. High tide is beetwen 2 and 3. The swell is here for like 3 days more. Pura Vida - Ed
** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The last couple days have seen that southwest ground swell with Negra hitting double overhead on the boil rock with good shape. Overcast and offshore in the mornings and rainy in the afternoons.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): If you can hit it early, it will be very good. The swell will be losing it punch as the week wears on. The rainy season weather will continue with some wet afternoons. You'll also notice alot less people in the lineup as summer is coming to an end in the States.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: It's high tide running through the early mornings this week. With that in mind check out Negra in the mornings and then Avellanas for the second session.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones:
With the bigger swell, we've got a faster "close out" around low tide, so keep that tide chart handy and look for mid to high tide sessions as best. Rain squalls can make it "clean" or "bump" it up - we're in the rainy season now. Pura vida - Coconut Harry
** From Jesse at the Samara Surf School -
Rain is hitting the beautiful Samara beach this week, but looks like the swell is up. So bring your boards and come surfing. Good surf times are early mornings and mid day to late afternoons. Windy and choppy but some nice form. New and upcoming events: Samara is starting a recycle program now, benefitting the beach and the local school children. Also: Festival de Sabores - Samara 2006 February 17 from 12-8pm An international flavor festival, food and wine tastings from all of the different cultures living in the community. Project Buena vista, goal is to raise $10,000 to help the local families, kids, schools and community..

AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waves Fri. Afternoon were 4-7 ft and windy choppy heavy etc. and pretty much closed out, if you wanted to bad enough you could find a couple but after 30 minutes I called it quits ! Hope yesterdays weather gets out of the way for some cleaning up over the weekend ! The half hour sets are plenty big and yesterdays shape wasn't too bad so the possibilities are endless ! We are going to have a rainy season closeout sale in the big shop next weekend , some boards at 100$ off regular price and lots of good deals on name brand clothes too ! Surf Expos right around the corner and need to spend some $ on new and exciting things so its out with the old and in with the new !!! Check it out ! Thanks Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF !!!!

Winds are often off-shore. Las olas en Tamarindo estan perfectas para aprender a surfear. Tiene tamano de a la cintura y el agua es clara y calida. Los vientos estan a veces off shore.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): No changes are predicted throughout the week as far as wave size. Expext small surf in the middle of the day and a beautiful beach for walking or running in the mornings and evenings. No se pronistican cambios para el fin de semana. Habra olas pequenas en el dia y una playa limpia para caminar o correr en la manana o al atardecer.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Grande and Avellanas have better size right now. Playa Grande y Avellanas tienen olas de mejor tamano.
** From Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: We have been enjoying great, overhead, morning surf all week. Today, Friday, it dropped to head high on the sets and the off shores backed off for some excellent glassey surf. The wind gently switched to on shore near the end of a marathon five hour session.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): It's all about the off shores which don't look that promising, and with Tamarindo almost flat, the whole world will be here riding tricky, but hopefully, glassey surf.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The main peaks around the hotel are more consistent right now. Chicken head rock at the north end of the beach has been good with the flatter sand and no backwash.
** From Ed at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
No waves at all, no swell at all and no wind at all. Tide is pretty late so didn't help today, we went out for a bit in the morning with our long board just for fun, to touch some water, but not because was the best. Our guests and guides were looking for waves around the coast but didn't wet too good. Negra was the best for them today, 3/4 ft waves, but usually it's bigger. Let's see for tomoorow. Pura Vida - Ed
** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf the past few days has been on the small to very small side. The weather has been the usual mix of sunshine with offshores in the morning with clouds and a bit of rain in the afternoon. Fun late afternoon sessions for the longboarders.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Looks to be small until midweek when they say a southwest groundswell will make it's way to the Gold Coast. Expect one of those tropical waves to dump some rain the first part of the week.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: It's low tide early this upcoming week so Avellanas in the morning and maybe Negra in the afternoons. Bring your noserider.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales:
John shoots and scores - . http://www.tamarindobeach.net/photos_lyman/index.html
** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones:
The waves showed up this morning (Thursday) around headhigh on sets and were good all day. Look for the best time on Friday morning from 7:00am until the wind kills it or you run out of gas. Sunny mornings and cloudy afternoons - chance of rain everyday. Pura velveeda - Coconut Harry
** From Sean at the Samara Surf School -
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Rainy season special on board rentals--- $5 an hour, $15 for half day, or $20 for the full day.
** From Andrea at Waves CR Surf Camp in Playa Hermosa -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Epic winter time Hermosa, glassy fun a frames this week.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): ´a little more rain.Gray skies gray waves.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Beachbreaks....
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS- Noticias y dias especiales: Gilbert Brown and Germaine "Nino" Myrie from Waves Costa Rica have been called to participate on Huntington beach for the world surfing games to represent Costa Rica amongst other local hot surfers from the area.
** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Surfs pretty fun right now ¡ Morning glass at Hermosa overhead sets with good form and winds holding off with the clouds . Hardly any rain and the weekend looks nice to me both surf and weather wise so come on down ! Not too much in the way of crowds so who not ? Go to www.costaricaltd.com to see Shifis shots too ! New Merricks arrived Fri. including a batch of A6s which are the cross between Flyer and Mx kind of . Could be the right board for our conditions on a regular basis ! Come on by and see em , Thanks Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF !
** From Nathon at Nathon's Place in Jaco -
Wave heights and conditions for Jaco'. 1 - 3 Ft. waves at high and low tide. This weekend is expected to suck as well with approximately the same predictions. The best Area to surf in our area is Playa Hermosa wich is bringing 4 - 5 1/2 Ft. waves at low and high tide. It is more consistent at low tide and less consistent at high tide the water is also like soft and mushy at high tide. What's new - Nathon's Surfer Hostel in Jaco' is that we built a new grinding rail for the youth of Jaco' to skate for free.
** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: Small waves coming in from the deep south. This makes the beach have a really good left but the waves a just a bit too small. Much better at lower tides (but not dead low).
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): More of the same. Maybe even smaller, but LOLA is hopping around every day changing what it says will happen from the day before. Usually, this LOLA behavior doesn't reflect what we see at the beach. Instead, we just get great little waves that are relatively consistent.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Anywhere from the river mouth to Roca Verde. If you get too close to the river mouth, even in these small waves, you can get stuck in a hole and find it shallow and difficult to get to the outside. If this happens, just paddle south from the river for about 50 meters and then head back out again.
NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS-: A local surf competition Saturday.

** From Diana at Pura Mar Surf Shop in Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: There's a south swell going off right now, closing out the beach break in Tamarindo and breaking both ways at Pico Pequeno. The beach break is head high and the reef is breaking over head a high tide. Winds are on shore but the reef is holding it fine. This week has been fairly dry with only one or two rain showers in the nights.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): This weekend everybody is going to paddle hard! Get out there early and hope for good winds--there are enough waves for everybody. Este fin de semana todo el mundo va a remar fuerte! Vaya temprano para los mejores vientos--hay olas suficiente para todos.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: There are waves everywhere, but Pico Pequeno is the best place in the bay for big surf right now. For nice smaller surf, head to Capitan Suizo. Hay olas en todas partes, pero Pico Pequeno es el mejor lugar para olas de tamano. Para olas mas pequenas, busca el Capitan Suizo.
** Louis at Hotel Las Tortugas in Playa Grande -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: This large, almost double overhead, swell has been messy all week with mostly calm wind. There were a few good sessions here and there.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The tides are perfect and the wind is trying to come off shore in the mornimg which could result in some excellent surf.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: If it's too big out front, duck down in the bay on the service road to the breaks around the Tamarindo Estuary.
** From Ed at Witchs Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo -
Ok my amigos- We woke up this morning to go down south, to our secret spot and the waves had good size, but because of the situacion with the storm in the Caribean side we didn't have off shore winds. We had closing outs, around 5/6 ft, heavy and short shoulders.
Pura vida - Ed
** From John at Lyman Photos in Playa Negra/Tamarindo -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: The surf is good size with some real mackers every 15 minutes or so. Sunny glassy mornings and cloudy slightly onshore afternoons.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Expect the waves to stay in the double overhead range at Playa Negra for the next 3 or 4 days as southwest swells are stacked up well into the middle of the week. More good size waves are on tap for next weekend as well.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Playa Negra on the incoming tides and Playa Avellanas as the tide goes out.

** From Harry at Coconut Harrys Surf Shop in Playa Guiones:
Still some size but dropping off a little now - wind has been a bit uncooperative lately, but high tides are in the morning, so we should get the best conditions early all weekend and into next week.
Coconut Harry - "SURF - EAT - SLEEP - REPEAT"
* From Jesse at the Samara Surf School -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Waist to chest high, glassy with offshore wind at times, breaking faster than previous swells. As usual perfect whitewater and begginer waves towards low tide.
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): The swell will hopefully pick up this weekend and begin to back off through the first half of next week, glassy in the mornings.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: The best surfing spot in Samara is right in front of the Las Brisas Del Pacifico hotel. No crowds or localism, breaks a little faster and further from shore. A bit sectiony, but nice workable waves.
** From Chuck at Walking on Water Surf Shop in Jaco -
Saw a young guy from San Jose moderate ability with a few years surfing and he just got the shack of his life on the new FLYER II he bought last week , I think it was almost as good for me when he said Mae CHUCK ,GRACIAS! for helping him pick out the right board as what HE felt when he came out of the barrel ! Anyways there is something to say about Channel Islands manufacturing and that is they are the best ! Pura Vida, Chuck and the CREW at W.O.W. SURF !
** From Tule at Manuel Antonio Surf School -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS - Tamano de las olas y condiciones: Swell is coming in so waves are great for surfing!!
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves) - Que va a pasar este fin de semana (clima y olas): Weather is beautiful, summer days, perfect waves, the sea seems glazed.
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA - El mejor lugar a surfear este fin de semana en su area: Best places to surf is all around, but we recommend playitas, frente de mar y sombra y la boca, olas mas pequeñas pero olas mas perfectas.
** From Brice at Land Assurance in Dominical -
AREA WAVE HEIGHTS AND CONDITIONS: The waves have grown but they are hitting the beach kinda square and hard. The sets are all overhead with some being almost double. I put in at the river mouth today and was almost to the cell tower by the time I made it to the outside. The low to no wind makes it inviting to step into this mess. I recommend other destinations (see below).
WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND (weather and waves): A tiny bit bigger but probably not too much badder on the way. The weather has been excellent!
BEST PLACE TO SURF THIS WEEKEND IN YOUR AREA: The beach is surfable, but it involves a lot of work to keep from being swept south. If you are going to surf the beach, I would put in as far north toward the river as possible and keep a constant light paddle going north. I haven't been to the point yet, but it usually doesn't work to well when the waves are coming from the west. However, I would bet it is better than the beach. You may also try Hermosa or further south.
